HÜLYA BILGI, IDIL ZANBAK VERMEERSCH.
Kütahya: Sadberk Hanim Museum Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics Collection.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (32 x 25 cm). Edition in English. 488 p., color ills. Kütahya: Sadberk Hanim Museum Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics Collection. The KÜTAHYA: Sadberk Hanim Museum's Kütahya Tile and Ceramic Collection Exhibition will be held at Sadberk Hanim Museum and remain open from 8 March until 25 November 2018. The exhibition encompasses Kütahya ware in all its wide diversity of form and decoration, and is accompanied by a comprehensive book on the subject. Curators of the exhibition are Hülya Bilgi and Idil Zanbak Vermeersch, who have also prepared the catalogue. The Ottoman period tiles and ceramics collection is one of the most important of the Sadberk Hanim Museum collections. It consists of ware made in potteries in Iznik, Kütahya and Çanakkale, which were the three main centres of Ottoman tile and ceramic art between the 15th and early 20th centuries; enabling the development of production over this period to be clearly understood. Organised as one of the major events on Sadberk Hanim Museum's programme for 2018, the exhibition presents examples of tiles and ceramics produced in Kütahya, where pottery has been made without interruption since antiquity and which in Ottoman times became the second most important source of tiles after Iznik. Sadberk Hanim Museum's Kütahya tile and ceramic collection is here exhibited chronologically and according to stylistic features. The exhibition is a reflection of production in Kütahya between the 18th and 20th centuries, during the Ottoman period. The diversity of the exhibits means that they throw light on both the artistic and technical aspects of Kütahya tile and ceramic production; tracing changes over time in decoration, form, and quality of the paste and glaze. Ceramic finds uncovered in the course of public infrastructure works in the city of Kütahya in 1979 demonstrated that production in Kütahya continued in parallel with that of Iznik. This ancient art managed to survive in Kütahya for centuries, from early Ottoman times onwards. Kütahya's master potters and tile makers maintained a high level of creativity and while styles changed throughout the period they continued to meet the needs of ordinary people for domestic ware, while at the same time producing tiles to embellish the walls of monumental buildings. Kütahya tiles and ceramics had long since found their way into museums and private collections in the 19th century, and today are increasingly sought after by collectors.

HÜLYA BILGI, TURGUT SANER, SEBNEM ERYAVUZ.
Motif from the Sadberk Hanim Museum Collection.= Sadberk Hanim Müzesi Koleksiyonu'ndan motif. [Exhibition catalogue]. 9 November 2020 - 31 October 2021, Sadberk Hanim Museum.
New English Original cloth bdg. Folio. (32 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 474 p., color and b/w ills. In 2020, its 40th anniversary, Sadberk Hanim Museum is justly proud of its position as Turkey's first private museum and aware of the responsibility that this entails. This significant anniversary is being celebrated by an inspiring exhibition and accompanying catalogue. The exhibition and publication project in this instance does not present a specific group of objects in the museum collections. Under the title 'Motif,' the panoramic diversity of every category is represented by bringing together historical motifs from different cultures that have encountered one another in very different regions. Up till now all of the museum's exhibitions have focused on strong aspects of the museum's collections. However, our anniversary project links objects together through their motifs, displaying the exceptional range of our relatively small yet outstanding museum. Motifs are the mainstays of works of art. The motifs of a novel, a story, a symphony or a folksong carry the work forward and bring it to life. The Latin word motivus encompasses several meanings: to set in motion, movement and flow. This project displays the historical depth, flow and cultural movement of the beautiful motifs on works of art in Sadberk Hanim Museum, both in the Archaeological Section and the Turkish-Islamic Section. In antiquity spinning motifs were used on coins that passed from hand to hand, while lamps illuminated cornucopias, vine branches and bunches of grapes that represented abundance and fertility. Garlands and acanthus motifs were introduced to Ottoman art. The rose (rh?don) featured on the coins of ancient Rhodes still conveys meaningful messages to us. Legendary creatures instilled fear but also gave protection; human figures on coins represented gods and rulers. The ancient lotus and palmette motif was applied to tile decoration by Ottoman artists. Motifs travelled back and forth along the caravan roads; much as today, for example, they wander the world on our clothes and bags. In the past motifs were passed down from master to apprentice and from older to younger generations, while now they gain new identities in the creative hands of designers. Our aim is to increase knowledge, arouse curiosity and share the beauty of 466 selected objects from the Sadberk Hanim Museum collection. These artefacts, each with a powerfully expressive aesthetic, represent nearly 500 motifs. Looking at these it becomes clear how closely connected Turkey is to both East and West, with Anatolia at its centre. The motifs have been divided into five main concepts, arranged from the general to the specific: Perception of the world and the universe ("Life and Power"); scenes of nature and the world of plants ("Nature"); images of human beings and animals in art ("Figurative Decoration"); expression in art of the principles governing a large and majestic system ("Order and Harmony"); and the ways in which people shape their surroundings ("Space"). One of the most important achievements of the project has been to give visibility to hundreds of motifs that might ordinarily escape attention. We invite visitors of every age and every occupation to establish an intellectual tie with what these historical motifs have to tell, and present a new visual palette and opportunity for intellectual exercise in relation to the world of art and forms. We developed this project in order to share the story of motifs with both art history and contemporary art circles, and to set the scene for a fresh look at many subjects, such as "rules, inspiration and evocation in creativity". Drawing attention to the possibilities of combining motifs with the visuality of the digital age and to the perfection found in antique works of art and handcrafts has been among our aims.

New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (33 x 28 cm). In English. 510 p., color ills. Dance of fire: Iznik tiles and ceramics in the Sadberk Hanim Museum and Ömer M. Koç Collections. Catalogue of 327 Iznik vessels and tiles from the Sadberk Hanim Museum and Ömer Koç Collections. "This exhibition, which is the first event on the museum's 2009 calendar, is designed to illustrate the chronological development if Iznik tiles and ceramics through the pieces in both collections. The Iznik ware in the exhibition comprises wall tiles and a wide range of vessels reflecting the socioeconomic status and tastes of their users produced at the Iznik potteries between the 15th and 17th centuries. Both tiles and vessels clearly illustrate the inexhaustible creativity of the artists, their richly vaired repertoire of decorative compositions, masterful use of colour, and constant search for technical innovation.".

Children of the Ottoman Seraglio. Customs and costumes of the princes and princesses.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (34 x 25 cm). In English. 300 p., color ills. Children of the Ottoman Seraglio. Customs and costumes of the princes and princesses. The family life of the masters of the Ottoman palace and the daily lives and clothing of the children of the sultans are topics which unfortunately have not been the subjects of detailed consideration. This deficiency has not only resulted incorrect assumptions, deep ignorance and erroneous opinion regarding their way of life and family relationships, but has also led to the incorrect interpretation of their place in Ottoman civilization. This is so because those distinguished persons who represent a particular cultural circle must be known well. Moreover, the persons of that milieu obviously affect the course of history, and that milieu produces select and distinguished persons who are unique to it. Among the members of the dynasty are artist sultans, princes and princesses; the life style of the dynasty is based on a unique tradition and that these works, among the wealth of the many objects in our museum, bear witness to the institution's historical and cultural identity. The Topkapi Palace Museum's worthy expert Doc. Dr. Hülya Tezcan, known for her publications on the historical topography of the palace and its pre-Ottoman works as well as her contribution to the work Ipek, on the textile collections of the Palace, now presents this invaluable research on the lives and costumes of the princes and princesses who were members of dynasty.

New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 23 cm). In English. 199 p., color and b/w ills. Tailors to the Court: M. Palma - D. Lena - P. Parma. "The company belonged to M. Palma & Sons and records included the period between 1897 and 1902. The second ledger, however, covered the period between 1902-1923, when M. Parma was employed as the Director of, and eventually the proprietor of the company and finally wound up the business. Parma workshop's garments were made for the palace and the wealthy and the trousers, jackets, waistcoats, raincoats and suchlike civilian clothes reflected the late period European fashion. The exhibition included prime examples of this phenomenon in the form of various garments that belonged to Sultan Abdülhamid II., his sons; Prince Mehmed Abid and Prince Ahmed Nurettin. The uniforms that belonged to Tevfik Pasha, the latest Minister-in Chief, that were made by Parma workshop indicated that at the point of Sultan's appointing the ministers the fashion has changed in favour of wearing uniforms instead of the traditional ornamented Kaftans [Khil'at]. Some of the exhibited dark navy jackets with broad scarlet stripes, such as the ones that belonged to Mahmud Muhtar Pasha were completely in line with the latest fashion of the European Uniforms.". Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary very aesthetics half-leather bdg. lettered gilt on the spine, and decorative gilt on boards. Marbled end-papers. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 315, [3] p. Exceedingly rare first edition of one of the early literary utopias in which a fictional island is the place of the novel, which is a symbol of the freedom longed for in the conjuncture of the period. The main theme is the effort to create an ideal atmosphere of love for lovers in the novel, in which factors such as social injustice and economic inequality affect the author. The novel centers on the theme of love, therefore, differs from other utopias. Yalçin was a prominent Turkish theorist, writer, and politician. He is famous for being a dissident journalist, who has been put on trial and punished due to his columns. His publications defending the idea of a homogenous nation became popular within Ittihat ve Terakki Partisi [i.e. The Party of Union and Progress]. Özege 7115. (Utopias from the Middle East 16).

Dancing letters: A selection of Turkish calligraphic art.= Rakseden harfler: Türk Hat Sanati'ndan seçme eserler.
New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 121 cm). In English and Turkish. 115 p., color ills. Dancing letters: A selection of Turkish calligraphic art.= Rakseden harfler: Türk Hat Sanati'ndan seçme eserler. "When the Turks accepted Islam, they extracted the Arabic alphabet, which they had uttered as a means of communication and ornamentation, as an extraordinary original national art, and they gave an important place in art history. The word "Qur'an, revealed in Mecca, read in Egypt, written in Istanbul" is the most beautiful expression of this truth. Today, mosques, museums, libraries and private lines embellish our national heritage, reflecting the fine taste and aesthetic sense of the Turkish artist. Antik A.S. has prepared the book in Turkish - English because of its intense interest in 'hat sanati' and also abroad and has illustrated with the most rare works of famous calligraphers. You can find "dancing letters", which we believe will inspire collectors and those interested in calligraphy".

Transcription of a manuscrIpt preserved at the Centre for Islamic Studies (ISAM) of Istanbul. Nisanci was a high post in Ottoman bureaucracy. It means 'court calligrapher' or 'sealer', as the original duty of the nisanci was to seal royal precepts. Although the post of the court calligrapher was established during the reign of Orhan (1324-1361), the name nisanci came into use during the reign of Murat II (1421-1451). According to the law of Mehmet II (1451-1481), the nisanci was a member of the divan (Ottoman government). Beginning in the mid-18th century, the post lost its former importance, and in 1836, it was abolished. OTTOMANIA Ottoman culture Bureaucracy Divan-i Hümayûn Kalemiyye.
