ILBER ORTAYLI.
Ottoman studies.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo.. (21 x 15 cm). Edition in English. 256 p. Ottoman studies. This collection of papers by Prof. Ilber Ortayli mainly deals with the political, economic, social and cultural transformations, which Ottoman Empire has undergone in its last centuries. Within the frame of millet conception, which was unique to the Empire as an administration system, this book looks into the areas of transformation, including the modernization struggles, tendencies in historiography, structural and judicial changes in family relations, provincial and urban structures and the relations between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. Prof. Ortayli details the millet system through allocating special titles for non-Muslim minorities in the Empire like the Jews and the Greeks. Similarly, he reveals the relations between Ottomanism and Zionism in the Empire's last decades. After giving a picture of the constitution and the parliament, he glances at how the history of the Ottoman Empire and Russia are approached in the historiographies. Turning back to the debates on modernization, he explains the background, starting from the second Vienna siege in 1683. In the following chapter he examines the structural changes in the international affairs of the Ottoman state. Before delving into the changes in civil life, he assigns two chapters to the provincial structures in the Empire's port cities. Meticulously examining the archives and sources about the late Ottoman history, Prof. Ortayli gives a comprehensive and multifaceted picture of the Empire. Moreover, he utilizes a wide range of Ottoman archives. Thanks to his language skills, he provides insights from several scholars whose writings in different languages enrich this book.

ILEANA MORONI.
O Ergatis, 1908-1909: Ottomanism, national economy and modernization in the Ottoman Empire.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 122 p. "Ergatis is a Greek-language newspaper published in Izmir from August 1908 until April 1909. Through the study of this newspaper, this book tries to shed light on certain aspects of the ideological developments that took place in the Ottoman Empire during the first months of the Second Constitutional Period, giving one example of one of the possible handicaps of Ottoman modernization. It would seem that at least a part of Izmir's Greek-orthodox bourgeoisie - to which the publishers of Ergatis belong - rally around goals that are not very different from the goals pursued by the Young Turks: uniting all Ottomans around a notion of Ottomanism, modernizing the Ottoman Empire and constructing an Ottoman national economy. However, their inability - or unwillingness - to sever their ties with their community's traditional leadership and ideology, places severe constraints upon their modernizing discourse.".

Architectural survey at the necropolis of Larisa (Buruncuk).= Larisa (Buruncuk) nekropolünde mimari arastirmalar.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English and Turkish. 260 p., color ills. Architectural survey at the necropolis of Larisa (Buruncuk).= Larisa (Buruncuk) nekropolünde mimari arastirmalar. In the second issue of ITU Foundation - Architectural History Research, the necropolis of ancient Larisa (Buruncuk), an important Aegean site, is displayed along with the architectural documentation of its grave units. This main topic is complemented by a text on the first map of Larisa from 1900 and a general description of the site. The necropolis of Larisa predominantly consists of small grave mounds with a ring- wall. The southernmost edge of the entire terrain is crowned by the Great Tumulus which is of colossal size. The formation of the necropolis must have occurred essentially between the 6 th and 4 th centuries BCE. However, discussions of dating, considerations on the social aspect of the graves, and the re-evaluation of 20 th century burial finds will be accomplished over time only after the termination of fieldwork. The texts, drawings and photographs in this issue serve the intention of registering the Larisa survey as an ITU Project, and presenting immediately the city's necropolis that is of great importance for the studies on the region.

ILHAN [KEMALEDDIN] MIMAROGLU, (1926-2012).
[MODERN UTOPIA BY TURKISH AMERICAN ELECTRONIC MUSIC COMPOSER] Yokistan tasarisi. [i.e. Neverland Project].
Very Good Turkish Original wrappers. 24mo. (12,5 x 9 cm). In Turkish. 64 p. First and only edition of this scarce modern utopian project of a Turkish - American electronic music composer Mimaroglu. Yokistan [i.e. Neverland] is an example of contemplating what the "best" life could be like in a place that doesn't exist. The economic system of the country is communist capitalism. Everyone is paid equal wages. There is no religion, no property, no unemployment, and no retirement. There is no family. There is no marriage in the text as a precondition for the absence of a family. The unit of society is the individual. The people are given their identities individually. The names of the parents are not on the identity card but may be included in the population register as useful information for authentication when necessary. There is birth control in this utopia. Giving birth without permission is considered a felony. Mimaroglu was born in Istanbul, after his graduation, he went to study in New York supported by a Rockefeller Scholarship. He studied musicology at Columbia University under Paul Henry Lang and composition under Douglas Moore. During the 1960s he studied at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Center under Vladimir Ussachevsky and on occasion worked with Edgard Varèse and Stefan Wolpe. His notable students included Ingram Marshall. He worked as a producer for Atlantic Records, where he created his own record label, Finnadar Records, in 1971. In the same year, he collaborated with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard on an anti-war statement, Sing Me a Song of Songmy. He also was the producer for Charles Mingus' Changes One and Changes Two, and contributed to the soundtrack of Federico Fellini's Fellini Satyricon. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in music composition in 1971. OCLC 40492024: Three copies worldwide, one is located in an American library (NY). (Utopias from the Middle East 19).

Iznik tiles and ceramics.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Oblong 4to. (19 x 31 cm). English Edition. 288 p., color ills. Iznik tiles and ceramics. In outlining the book, we decided to start by giving an account of the world famous Iznik tiles and ceramics through a brief history of the beautiful city that gave birth to the tiles and tile-making arts and industry. In the chapters that followed the historical account, we tried to provide brief informative accounts of tile production and tile designs to go on, afterwards, introducing Iznik tiles with their most beautiful examples which decorated many of the major buildings dating to the 15th and 16th centuries. Our tour of tiles includes both the tiles that were used in the walls of the buildings and Iznik ceramics that are currently exhibited in the museums and collections in the world. In the book, we tried to introduce the tile decorations that were frequently used in the architectural works of the period by classifying them in accordance with the buildings in which they were used. The chapters following the above mentioned accounts are reserved for the introduction of the list of skillfully produced ceramics in chronological order. Printed on coated paper, has a special binder and book jacket.

Anatolia in the Antique age was divided into many different regions such as Troas, Ionia, Aiolis, Mysia, Lydia, Phrygia, Caria, Lykia, Pamphylia, Pisidia, Cilicia, Commagene, Galatia, Bithynia and Pontus which had about a total of 1500 antique city settlements. Some of these city settlements were left under the soil as a result of the modern construction industry while many more still wait for being searched and excavated. Today, 133 of these cities were excavated and arranged. This work aims at introducing the relatively significant ones of the cities mentioned above that were excavated. We tried to use support the narrative with the city plans and up-to-date photographs. Although it was quite difficult to choose the photographs out of a rich collection of thousands of pictures that reflected the geographical riches of the land, we enjoyed the challenge and did our best in utmost meticulousness in picking the ones that we thought were fitting. The history and architecture of the Hagia Sophia.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. In special slip-case. 4to. In English. 300 p. Color and b/w ills. Having decorated the silhouette of Istanbul for nearly 1500 years, the Hagia Sophia has been regarded as the Eighth Wonder of the World by several scientific journals. It has become one of the most important stones in art history for the mosaics and decorations it houses. When the construction of the church, which was begun upon the order of Emperor Justinian, was completed, those who had seen it were stunned by its superior architectural features of the period and the quality of the materials used in its construction. Arriving on Christmas Day, December 27th, 537 riding a chariot pulled by four horses, Emperor Justinian inaugurated the impressive structure with the prayers of Patriarch Menas. It was to remain the heart of the Christian world as the most important church of the Eastern Roman Empire for the next 916 years. Adorned with the finest mosaics of Byzantine art, it did not take long before this structure became synonymous with Constantinople. As the pride of Christianity, the Hagia Sophia was to sustain major damage from as fires and earthquakes. However, ironically, it was the Latins who wreaked the most havoc upon the church during the 4th Crusade of 1204. Despite all the disasters that befell the city, the Hagia Sophia managed to remain intact, continuing to be the shining light of the envy of the world, The long Byzantine era concluded with the conquest of Constantinople by Sultan Mehmet Khan II in 1453, thus marking the start of the Islamic era at the Hagia Sophia. The highly reverent Ottomans carefully converted this huge house of worship into a mosque. Bearing the title 'Caliph of Islam', the sultans conducted their obligatory prayer services and religious holiday receptions here. One of the most important indications of the merit showered upon the structure during this period was the fact that some Ottoman sultans were buried here. Having served as one of the most important mosques of the Islamic world for 481 years, the Hagia Sophia's mosaics were plastered over in compliance with Islamic custom. Moreover, the Turkish works and architectural additions contributed an incomparable richness to the aura of the Hagia Sophia. A number of Byzantine era structures remain extant today thanks to the renovation studies conducted during the Ottoman era. In particular, the additions and repairs made by Mimar Sinan, as well as the periodic studies commissioned by some Ottoman sultans have contributed towards ensuring the structure maintained the same splendor when it was first built. Sultan Abdulmecit commissioned the Swiss architect, Gaspare Fossati to renovate the Hagia Sophia between 1847-1849, during which the mosaics were also repaired. The mosaics began to be cleaned and displayed in 1934 when the structure was converted into a museum. Having remained intact for practically 15 centuries, UNESCO has also placed this structure on the list of edifices that need to be preserved. We took it upon ourselves to acquaint readers of this book with the architecture, mosaics, legends and Turkish-era works of this world-famous structure. I wish to thank and offer my regards to all everyone who has contributed their time and labor towards the production of this book.
