Killing Orders: Talat Pasha’s Telegrams and the Armenian Genocide (Palgrave Studies in the History of Genocide)
8vo, br. ed. 288pp. The book represents an earthquake in genocide studies, particularly in the field of Armenian Genocide research. A unique feature of the Armenian Genocide has been the long-standing efforts of successive Turkish governments to deny its historicity and to hide the documentary evidence surrounding it. This book provides a major clarification of the often blurred lines between facts and truth in regard to these events. The authenticity of the killing orders signed by Ottoman Interior Minister Talat Pasha and the memoirs of the Ottoman bureaucrat Naim Efendi have been two of the most contested topics in this regard. The denialist school has long argued that these documents and memoirs were all forgeries, produced by Armenians to further their claims. Taner Akçam provides the evidence to refute the basis of these claims and demonstrates clearly why the documents can be trusted as authentic, revealing the genocidal intent of the Ottoman-Turkish government towards its Armenian population. As such, this work removes a cornerstone from the denialist edifice, and further establishes the historicity of the Armenian Genocide.

Ibn Sina wrote more than 270 books, some of a few pages, others extending through several volumes which are concerning philosophy, religion, medicine, natural sciences, and other scientific areas. All books that written by Ibn Sina are in Arabic but one which in Persian language. Arabic was accepted as the scientific language at that age and writing in Arabic was a scientific tradition. Ibn Sina composed his major philosophical treatise, Kitab al-shifa (Book of Healing), a comprehensive account of learning that ranges from logic and mathematics to metaphysics, and the best known major medical book, Canon of Medicine, el-Kânûn fit-Tibb in 5 volumes. He wrote another short book about medicine and diseases as if a summary of his Great Canon, Kânûn-u Sagîr (Small Canon). One copy of this book is at Bayezid State Library, Istanbul, section of hand-written books and recorded in Catalogue of Veliyuddin Efendi nr.2529. This book was translated in Turkish by a committee under the head of mine and published in 2013. Ibn Sina systematized this book as he did in the main Great Canon. At the beginning of every section he gave a short information and cut the section into subsections. Kanûn-u Sagir consists of ten separate sections. First of all, the being of the human, moulding the body, and the parts of the medical science is told. The pulse is described in details. The basic knowledges related to the organs, the urine, the power of the food and drinks, keeping the health, training the children, management of the pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, from the head to the feet the basic diseases of the regions of the body are summarized.

Madduwatta(s) was a king of Arzawa, in Anatolia, about 14th or 13th century BC. Probably, Madduwatta was first a local king of a Lukka city-state at coast of southwestern Asia Minor. He faced a struggle, in the Lukka Lands, against a "man from Ahhiya", named Attarsiya (or Atreus, in Hellenized rendering and lost his rule. Tudhaliya II, great king of Hittite Empire, gave Madduwatta asylum, and even gave him the mountainous kingdom Zippasla (i.e. Sippylos, the mountainous part of Lydia?) with the Siyanti River Land (Maeandrus river?); but, on condition that Madduwatta use it as a base to invade Arzawa. When Madduwatta did this, Kupanta-Kurunta, king of Arzawa, destroyed his army and occupied Zippasla. Once more, Tudhaliya defeated Madduwatta's enemy and restored Madduwatta to his throne. And then, Madduwatta's previous enemy Attarisiya attacked Zippasla, with 100 chariots. This time, Madduwatta did not even defend himself, but fled a third time to the Hittites. Tudhaliya sent a third army under Kisnapali (a Hittite general) to the land to drive Attarissiya out. This time, the Hittite army was ordered to stay. Madduwatta, apparently, then decided he was never again going to suffer such indignities. When Dalawa (Tlos) and Hinduwa rebelled, Madduwatta suggested that Kisnapali take Hinduwa while Madduwatta take Dalawa. But while Kisnapili was on his way to Hinduwa, Madduwatta allied with Dalawa, and with its help ambushed and killed Kisnapali. Independent once more, Madduwatta married the Arzawan king's daughter, and soon took that kingdom too. The flourishing of Madduwatta is reported as 1410 B.C. When Tudhaliya ordered Madduwatta to put down a revolt in Hapalla (or Caballa), he did - but then Madduwatta forced Hapalla, too, to switch loyalty to his own side. He then bullied Pisidia into his kingdom, even closer to the Hittite heartland. Under Tudhaliya's successor Arnuwanda I, Madduwatta even allied with his old foe Attarisiya and invaded Alashiya. In French Arabic Persian and Ottoman script Old Turkish with Arabic letters. 3 volumes set: 992 p.; 659 p.; 806 p. Slight wear and fading on bindings and spines and stains on pages. Overall a good set. First and only edition of this early comprehensive dictionary between multiple Eastern languages of Arabic Persian and Ottoman Turkish and French. Handjeri Hangerli had begun work on the volumes as early as 1806 upon the request of Armand Charles Guilleminot 1774-1840 a French general during the Napoleonic wars later ambassador to the Sublime Porte and awarded the Order of St. Anna. He completed the book in 1840 and dedicated it to the Russian Tsar Nicolas I who had it published in the Russian Imperial Press. In the preface of his work Alexandre Handjeri states that he tried to enrich his dictionary with artistic and technical terms in order to be useful to travelers and merchants as well as poets and that his book has distinctive features from previous dictionaries such as Meninsky's dictionary. The book which was sent to Istanbul for the review of the printing sample was introduced in Takvîm-i Vekâyi i.e. the first newspaper published in the Imperial Ottoman before the first volume was published. Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid ordered 200 copies in his own name and also sent a jewel-decorated box to Handjéri as a gift for his service to the Turkish language and culture when the work was published. Handjeri was born in Constantinople received a thorough education trained to speak several European languages as well as Ottoman Turkish and Arabic and prepared for a high-ranking position in the Danubian Principalities. In his twenties he married a princess of the Callimachi family. Although coming into conflict with Ottoman officials on several occasions Handjeri was promoted to the Dragoman of the Porte in 1805 and he maintained the office for the following two years until Sultan Selim III appointed him Prince of Moldavia in place of the deposed Alexander Mourousis. He was nevertheless prevented from reaching his court in Iashi by the Russian occupation of the country and instead followed the Ottoman Army in their offensive. He was able to gain his throne after the Treaty of Bucharest and played a major part in re-establishing the country's administration. Upon the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence Handjeri felt threatened by a possible Ottoman move against the Phanariotes. He was allegedly warned by the Russian ambassador to the Porte Alexander Grigoriyevich Stroganov that as a prominent Greek in Istanbul he risked being assassinated and so he decided to flee the country. Handjeri and his family including his two sons Gregory and Telemach embarked on a small ship and set sail across the Black Sea dropping anchor at Odesa where they were given asylum by Novorossiya's governor Alexandre Langeron. Soon he moved to Moscow where he was awarded honors by Emperor Nicolas I. His title was recognized by Russian nobility and his two sons were appointed Counselors.
