Feeding people, feeding power: Imarets in the Ottoman Empire.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 312 p., b/w and color ills. Feeding people, feeding power: Imarets in the Ottoman Empire. Imarets have long been recognized as one signature institution of the Ottoman Empire. These public kitchens were typically located in mosque complexes or multi-structured complexes, which included some or all of the following buildings: mosque, medrese, mekteb, tomb, caravansaray, sufi tekke (or tekye) , hospital, bath, market, and other structures associated with the social, economic, and cultural life of the population, usually in an urban setting. Studying imarets is yet another way to explore the Ottoman vision of conquest, empire-building, and imperial rule. The imarets were part of the multiple Ottoman provisioning systems supporting the imperial palaces, military campaigns, cities, and the annual hajj caravan to Mecca and Medina. The public kitchens operated in a society where the state and beneficent institutions held a continual and considerable role in contributing to the daily subsistence of all kinds of individuals. Ultimately, the Ottoman sultan's preoccupation with food was in part an outgrowth of his political and military capacities, and his general responsibility to provide for his subjects. Although the precise dynamic of the emergence of imarets as a distinct institutional form is a process that remains to be traced, it was clearly a confluence of historical practices, together with the demands placed on the early Ottoman sultanate, that gave rise to the particular form of the imaret. Evliya Celebi remarked that in all his travels he saw "nothing like our enviable institution." At least one architectural historian claims that no earlier structures have been found that are analogous and certainly none are described in general books on Islamic architecture. The particular Ottoman origin of the imaret as a distinct architectural form is also attested by its presence throughout the Ottoman lands, Anatolia, the Balkans, and the Arab provinces, regions that did not necessarily share institutions in the pre-Ottoman period. Entirely unexplored remains the impact of Byzantine practices of charity on the Ottoman imarets. The daily distribution of cooked meals to large numbers of urban dwellers year-round from a special building designed for that purpose thus appears to have been an Ottoman innovation, at least outside the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, and of Hebron.

Photographs of the Rumeli Shore of the Bosphorus from the mid-XIXth to the XXth century.= Konstantiniyye'den Istanbul'a. XIX. yüzyil ortalarindan XX. yüzyila Bogaziçi'nin Rumeli Yakasi fotograflari. [Exhibition catalogue]. The exhibition showcased works by masters of photography, who practiced their art in Istanbul from the end of the XIXth to the early years of the XXth century. Comprised from a selection of photographs from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Photograph Collection and from private collections, it revealed the magnificent structures, daily life and intriguing personalities of an Istanbul past. Istanbul has evolved into an industrial city, an enormous metropolis: its silhouette, architecture, vehicles, bridges, quays, streets and public spaces have attained an entirely different appearance. Masters such as Ali Sami Aközer, Félice Beato, Guillame Berggren, Abdullah Biraderler, Gülmez Biraderler, Ernest Edouard de Caranza, Sebah & Joaillier, Maurice Meys, Ali Enis Oza, James Robertson and Elisa Pante Zonaro document the nostalgic images of the city during their time, taking us on a pleasurable journey through the photographs they took in the difficult and challenging techniques of the time.

DILEK BEKTAS.
Nomads in the Ottoman Empire.= Osmanli döneminde konar-göçerler.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English and Turkish. 310 p., ills. Nomads in the Ottoman Empire.= Osmanli döneminde konar-göçerler. The Turks migrated originally from Central Asia to Anatolia between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. Most of them were sedentary communities. However, a significant portion was nomads, called Oghuz, or Türkmen, at that time. These nomads used to move between regions identified as summer pasturages and winter quarters in order to graze their animals. Therefore, their lifestyle was substantially different from sedentary life. Even after Anatolia was brought under Ottoman rule by the end of the first quarter of the 16th century, they continued their traditional lifestyle. During the Ottoman conquests, these nomads migrated to the Balkans in accordance with the policy pursued by the state. The nomads in the Balkans were generally organized as military units. During the Ottoman period the nomads were known by the names of Türkmen and Yörük or Yürük. These names were generally used to describe their way of life, rather than their ethnic origin. However, these terms were often sed interchangeably. At the same time, various other words were used for the nomads, such as 'Konar-göçer', 'Göçebe', 'Göçer-yörük', 'Göçerler', and 'Göçer-evliler'. The most common one among these was 'Konar-göçer'. All of these words are found in Ottoman archival documents and carry only the meaning of 'nomad'. Geographically, the nomads of the Ottoman period spread from Anatolia to the Balkans and formed an important portion of the Ottoman population. Despite this fact, research remains insufficient regarding the nomadic peoples. The reason for this has been keener isterest by historians in Turkey concerning the foundation of the Turkish Republic and political and administrative issues rather than nomadism. Research in Ottoman social history was not popular among these historians. However, as research on Ottoman social history grew, so did interest in nomadic populations.

New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). 196 p. In Turkish and English. B/w and color ills. "Pera Museum in collaboration with the Amsterdam Museum is organizing an exhibition exploring the commencement of four hundred years of fruitful cooperation between Turkey and the Netherlands. It was on 14 March 1612 during the ruling of the Ottoman Empire that the first Ambassador of Dutch Republic, Cornelis Haga, arrived in Constantinople. The year 2012 marks the four hundredth year of this diplomatic relations. In collaboration with several other leading partners, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Nationaal Archief in The Hague and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the exhibition aims to spread knowledge about historical and contemporary links between Amsterdam and Istanbul. The exhibition explores the historical and contemporary relations between two world cities and through these cities, implicitly also the two countries. 'Pioneers' and 'image (-forming)' are among the prominent themes. The exhibition is not intended as a complete survey of four centuries of diplomatic ties, but rather provides an attractive insight into the historical ties between Amsterdam and Istanbul, from 1612 to the present day. The exhibition is historical and social in approach, yet it also features important art works as well. A key section of the exhibition is a reconstruction of the Levantse Handel (Levant Trade) chamber that was based in the Town Hall (Palace on Dam Square) from the early 17th to early 19th century. A detailed inventory exists of the paintings and charts that were displayed on the walls of this powerful commercial office in Amsterdam. Many of these items, including an extensive series of portraits by Vanmour, from the collection of Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum will also be exhibited".

New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In French and Turkish. 218 p., b/w plts., xvi color numerous plts. Varia Anatolica XXIX. The Artist, The Sultan and his portrait: Mehmed the Conqueror according to Gentile Bellini.= Ressam, Sultan ve portresi: Gentile Bellini'ye göre Fatih Sultan Mehmet. [Exhition catalogue]. Edited by Münevver Eminoglu. Consultant: Günsel Renda. This exhibition consists of a single painting: the famous portrait that the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror had painted by the Italian artist Gentile Bellini about five hundred years ago and is now in the collection of the National Gallery of London. The painting is a magnificent souvenir of a brief 'golden age' in a reminder that, as early as the Renaissance and under the leadership of a strong and foresighted ruler, Ottoman society, which always looked wetward, hd the chance to grasp universal civilization.
