The sultans of poetry.= Siirin sultanlari. Prep. by Ezgi Zorlu.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 416 p. The sultans of poetry.= Siirin sultanlari. Prep. by Ezgi Zorlu. During their time, the sultans were known as hukumdar (ruler). That is one who rules, one who holds authority in their hands. It is arguable whether every sultan was a ruler; but there is no doubt that every ruler lived in his own poetry as the sultan of the word. The Sultans of Poetry ruled during the Ottoman centuries, enlivening the corridors of history with dize (lines), beyit (couplets), gazel (lyric poems) and kaside (eulogies); now all these words have given us an eagerness to undertake an uplifting journey through the royal gardens where the poems of the sultans used to resound. I hope you enjoy the trip!.

Tailors to the court: M. Palma - D. Lena - P. Parma.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 23 cm). In English. 199 p., color and b/w ills. Tailors to the Court: M. Palma - D. Lena - P. Parma. "The company belonged to M. Palma & Sons and records included the period between 1897 and 1902. The second ledger, however, covered the period between 1902-1923, when M. Parma was employed as the Director of, and eventually the proprietor of the company and finally wound up the business. Parma workshop's garments were made for the palace and the wealthy and the trousers, jackets, waistcoats, raincoats and suchlike civilian clothes reflected the late period European fashion. The exhibition included prime examples of this phenomenon in the form of various garments that belonged to Sultan Abdülhamid II., his sons; Prince Mehmed Abid and Prince Ahmed Nurettin. The uniforms that belonged to Tevfik Pasha, the latest Minister-in Chief, that were made by Parma workshop indicated that at the point of Sultan's appointing the ministers the fashion has changed in favour of wearing uniforms instead of the traditional ornamented Kaftans [Khil'at]. Some of the exhibited dark navy jackets with broad scarlet stripes, such as the ones that belonged to Mahmud Muhtar Pasha were completely in line with the latest fashion of the European Uniforms.". Human physiognomy or the features of the Ottomans.= Kiyâfetü'l-insâniyye fî semâili'l-'Osmâniyye. Prep. by TTT.
Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (32 x 23 cm). Texts in modern Turkish and English and facsimile manuscript in Ottoman Turkish. 287 p., color ills. The study of physiognomy, kiyafe(t) ilmi, which is as old as humanity itself, has been developed into a science by Islamic writers who have used in it support of other branches of learning such as medicine, administration, literature and theology. In Islamic thought, the human body is in a sense conceived as clothing or an attire that envelops and protects the soul. Works that dealt with the interpretation of this relationship between the inner qualities and the outer appearance were known under names such as 'kiyafet-nâme, vesiletü'n-'irfân, firâset-nâme and zübdetü'l-'irfân. The science of kiyafet was handed down by Muslim Arab thinkers to Persians and Turks as a cultural legacy and attained a significant place in Ottoman learning. The kiyafet-nâme of Seyyid Lokman Çelebi, who is one of the leading court eulogists, was written in the ornate literary style of 16th century which is difficult to comprehend today. In the introduction of the work he gave it the title of Kiyâfetü'l-insâniyye fî semâili'l-'Osmâniyye. The book is composed of two parts, Part I is concerned with a definition.

A study on Knidos or Cnidus is an ancient settlement located in south-western Asia Minor, modern-day Turkey. It was an ancient Greek city of Caria, part of the Dorian Hexapolis. It was situated on the Datça peninsula, which forms the southern side of the Sinus Ceramicus, now known as Gulf of Gökova. Tarihçi Christoph K. Neumann'in hedefi, eserin, içinde yazildigi zamana getirdigi elestirel yaklasim göz önünde bulundurularak okunmasidir. Çalisma, üç ana konuyu ele aliyor: Ahmed Cevdet, genel olarak Osmanli tarihyaziciligi ve 19. yüzyil Ottoman history. Eserin kendi zamaninin siyasi düsüncesindeki önemi ise ön plandadir. Cevdet'in Ottoman history anlatisinin temelinde hangi önermeler, beklentiler ve bakis açilari vardi? Yazar hangi amaçlarla yaziyor ve nelere karsi tavir aliyordu? Getirdigi gerekçelerle 19. yüzyilin ikinci yarisindaki Ottoman history arasinda hangi baglantilar kurulabilir? Yazar gibi biz de bu kitabin Tarih-i Cevdet'i, tasvir ettigi çag için daha iyi kullanilabilir bir kaynak haline getirecegini umuyoruz.
