Engraved by WILLIAM POOLE, (1803-1807).
[HANDCOLOURED COLOR ENGRAVING] An Egyptian Arab. Plate XXII.= Une Arabe Egyptienne. Planche vingt-deuxiemme. [Egyptian women]. Drawn by Octavien Dalvimart.
Very Good English Original hand-coloured engraved plate. Edges gilt. Large 4to. (37 x 27 cm). With its separate sheet of descriptive bilingual text in English and French. An attractive, richly colored and detailed engraved image. Very good, bright. An original plate from Dalvimart's famous and extremely rare work 'The costume of Turkey', first edition in 1802. Little is known about Octavien Dalvimart, besides the facts that he worked in Britain as painter and engraver, and that he was living in Paris in 1803. According to the prologue to this edition, he travelled during four years (starting in 1796), always drew from nature, and was in Athens in 1797. This elegant work was first published in 1802, and again in 1818 and 1820. It includes 60 drawings of human types from the Ottoman Empire. (Abbey Travel 370; Colas 782; Lipperheide 1422). The explanatory texts, in English and French, are based on extracts from works by Baron de Tott, J. Dallaway, G.A. Olivier, M. Montague, J. Pitton de Tournefort, ?ouradgea d'Ohsson and others. Dalvimart's drawings have been used in similar albums and illustrated other travel accounts. Human types are precisely drawn and handsomely depicted in very real colors. "The varieties of female dress in most of the eastern nations can never be distinguished when they are in the streets, both form their veils and the long cloaks in which they are concealed. At Cairo they conceal the head and part of the body by a large black veil; and those who can afford rich habits, are always covered with a large wrapper. The veil, which is always the first concern with the women, for it is the very last part of their dress they would part with, is formed of a long triangular piece of linen cloth fitted to the head, and falling down before, so as to cover all the face except the eyes. At Cairo this is always black, and very large. All the oriental women wear drawers, and the poorer sort in Egypt wear little ese but these drawers, and a long blue shirt.". etc.

A 19th century album of Ottoman Sultans' portraits. Suna and Inan Kiraç Collection.= Osmanli Padisah portreleri. Bir 19. yüzyil albümü. Inan ve Suna Kiraç Koleksiyonu.
New English Original bdg. HC. In publisher's special box. Folio. (38 x 28 cm). In English and Turkish. A 19th century album of Ottoman Sultans' portraits. Suna and Inan Kiraç Collection.= Osmanli Padisah portreleri. Bir 19. yüzyil albümü. Inan ve Suna Kiraç Koleksiyonu. In the mind of every Turk, there is a set image for Ottoman Sultans that he has acquired from a variety of sources: school books, historical texts, encyclopaedias, etc. The Ottoman royal image is not altogether unknown to the Europeans either. This is due to the fact that there is a pictorial record of the Ottoman Sultans created by the numerous portraits produced through the centuries by Turkish and European artists. It was a great pleasure for me to write the explanatory text to this special album of sultan portraits in Inan and Suna Kirac collection. The absence of an original text in the album itself complicated the study of the portraits in view of their iconography, especially the richly detailed backgrounds and attributes used for each sultan. This necessitated a thorough study of historical sources and a search for comparative albums. Nevertheless 17 similar albums dating from approximately the same period were recorded and listed after the text. The main question was to explore into the realm of the Ottoman artist to discover his approach to portraiture. In Islam, to read a person's character through the study of his physiognomy has been a science. With this in mind, did the Ottoman artist confine himself only to the preset details of each sultan's physiognomy or did he enrich his knowledge about the sultans through other sources? I strongly believe that the artist of the Kirac album did this. Therefore, in the short texts accompanying each portrait, I chose to give a brief record of the sultan's deeds, interests and personality as revealed in historical sources. In this way, it would be easier to comprehend the artist's interpretation. In the main text, I tried to give a comprehensive summary of the history of royal portraiture among the Ottomans and presented the prototypes to this album. Then came a discussion of the Kirac album itself not only in view of its artistic value but also as a significant source of information about imperial attire and certainly the artistic milieu of the Ottoman Empire in the first decades of the 19th century.

Diyarbakir was ruled by the Roman Empire for 700 years and we do not have enough information about the long time slice from the Roman rule in 69 BC until the conquest by the Islamic armies in 639 AD. The city maintained its economic, political and strategic important during this period and so as to gain dominance there were great wars between Rome and Parthians / Sassanids the great powers of the period. The Zerzevan Castle, which is the military settlement of Rome located in the Çinar district of Diyarbakir province and protects the border line, has an important place in illuminating the history of the region together with boosting the tourism.

GUILLAUME DELISLE, (1675-1726).
[MAP] Carte de la grece ou turquie d'Europe.
Very Good French Original decorated map. Hand-coloured. Oblong elephant folio. (54 x 76 cm). In French. Shows Greece, Archipelago, Isle de Candie, Asia Minor (Western side), and East Mediterranean. Delisle od de l'Isle was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas. At 27, Delisle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of "Géographe de l'Académie". Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l'Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. Delisle's progress culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. He was appointed to teach geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV's son, a task for which he received a salary. Again, his father's reputation as a man of science probably helped the younger Delisle. Historian Mary Sponberg Pedley says, 'once authority was established, a geographer's name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers'. Delisle's case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father's. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire's claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas. Like many cartographers of his day, Delisle did not travel with the explorers. He drew maps mostly in his office, relying on a variety of data. The quality of his maps depended on a solid network to provide him first-hand information. Given his family's and his own reputation, Delisle had access to fairly recent accounts of travellers who were returning from the New World, which gave him an advantage over his competitors. Being a member of the Académie, he also kept current with recent discoveries, especially in astronomy and measurement. When he could not confirm the accuracy of a source, he would indicate it clearly on his maps. For instance, his Carte de la Louisiane shows a river that the baron of Lahontan claimed he discovered. As no one else could validate it, Delisle noted a warning to the viewer that it might not exist. (Source: Wikipedia). Tooley, p.43.
