This passion, which originates in Ancient Greek and Roman periods has gained wide appeal in the 16th century, and continues to our age. In addition to their status as historical documents due to their subject matters, handwritten letters also establish an emotional connection with these eminent personalities. This book features assiduously selected samples from the Ömer M. Koç Collection. These letters dated between 1795 and 1922 are presented in chronological order, and were written in Latin script by a number of prominent and colourful figures including Grand Vizier Mustafa Ressid Pasha, Abdülhamid Efendi - then still a prince, Queen Victoria, Lord Kitchener. While these priceless documents contain some personal feelings and thoughts, for the most part they shed light on the political and cultural relations the Ottoman Empire developed with the Occident. We believe that this publication will greatly benefit our cultural and artistic memory as well as our history and diplomacy. It begins with a scrutinizing of the role of woman from the prehistoric times down to the Hittite period (60.000-17700 BCE) and outlines, regarding also the feminism, the history of the woman, and details the women and queens among the Hittites. My starting point is that it is absolutely worthwhile to single out the life and unique deeds of a matriarchal woman who lived and acted fortuitously in the midst of extremely patriarchal Indo-European society in Hatti. She is the only Hittite queen, who bears quasi-"feminist" features, and her role in the Hittite-Anatolian society remains unique.

The Tahtali Dam was constructed in Cuma Plain to provide potable water to Izmir. Before the dam project was completed, archaeological research and excavations have been conducted in the region between the years of 1994 and 2001 for salvaging the cultural property which would submerge because of the dam. Within the scope of the studies, as part of the protocol signed by the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSI) and the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums, excavations have been performed under the presidency of Izmir Archaeological Museum Director, Dr. Turhan Özkan, and under the scientific direction of Prof. Dr. Hayat Erkanal, faculty member at Ankara University Department of Archaeology. A tumulus and a pithos grave belonging to LBA uncovered during these studies between 1996 and 1997 are discussed in this publication.
