‎As New English Original creme leather bdg. with special design. A Byzantine saint gilt under the window of front cover. Mint. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. [8], 282 p., 186 numerous color figures. Tatlarin: Wall paintings of churches no. I and no. II.= I ve II no'lu kiliselerin duvar resimleri. Tatlarin underground city, which was one of the most important underground cities of the Cappadocia region, could only be discovered in 1975 because its original entrance had collapsed and had gone underground to be opened to the visits of tourists in 1991. The toilet in it demonstrates that toilets were being used in Anatolia around 3000 years ago. There are many food storage areas and churches within it. It is believed to have been used as a center for religious or military purposes judging by the large size of its rooms. Only two floors of the Tatlarin underground city which has spread over a pretty large area can be visited currently, however works continue to open the other floors to visits as well. Although there is a large number of churches around and within the Tatlarin underground city which is near the Acýgöl district of the Nevþehir province a major part of them have collapsed due to natural causes. This book includes wall paintings of two of those churches, No. 1 and 2.‎

‎Bir elçinin tarihçe-i sefareti, 1207-1208 (Tarih-i Osmani Encümeni Külliyati, Aded: 3).‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary black cloth bdg. Modern Turkish lettered gilt on spine. Little stains on top of the first pages. A clean copy otherwise. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script. 112 p. Mustafa Rasih Pasha who was one of the important figures of Babiali at the time of III. Selim was sent to the Russia as an ambassador after treaty of Jassy. There are sefâretnâme and arîza about Rasih Pasha's embassy. The works written by Ottoman ambassadors or their assistances about their journeys are called sefâretnâme. The embassy travel and Russian impressions have been transferred into sefâretnâme related to Rasih Pasha's Russian embassy. Rasih Pasha described the social, economic, military, administrative and economic aspects of Russia in detail which are not explained in sefâretnâme in his arîza. These works composed after Rasih Pasha's embassy to Russia have involved very important informations about Russian Empire at the end of XVIII. Century. It is seen that the development of Russia during I. Petro reached to the top towards the end of XVIII. Century time of the II. Catherine. III. Selim as an Ottoman King made use of the arîza written on Russian during his reconstruction movement known as Nizam-i Cedit movement. This book includes memoirs of embassy of Mustafa Rasih Pasha in Russia. Hegira: 1333 = Gregorian: 1917. First Edition. Özege 2277.; TBTK 11603.; 6 copies in OCLC: 21790420.‎

‎FÜRUZAN KINAL.‎

‎Geographie et l'histoire des pays d'Arzava.‎

‎Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Small 4to. (26 x 18 cm). In French. 52 p. Ills. Arzawa in the second half of the 2nd millennium BC (roughly from late 15th century until the beginning of the 12th century) was the name of a region and a political entity (a "kingdom" or a federation of local powers) in Western Anatolia. The core of Arzawa is believed to have been located along the Kestros River (Küçük Menderes), with its capital at Apasa, later known as Ephesus. When the Hittites conquered Arzawa it was divided into three Hittite provinces: a southern province called Mira along the Maeander River, which would later become known as Caria; a northern province called the Seha River Land, along the Gediz River, which would later become known as Lydia; and an eastern province called Hapalla. It was the successor state of the Assuwa league, which also included parts of western Anatolia, but was conquered by the Hittites in c. 1400. Arzawa was the western neighbour and rival of the Middle and New Hittite Kingdoms. On the other hand it was inclose contact with the Ahhiyawa of the Hittite texts, which corresponds to the Achaeans of Mycenaean Greece. Moreover, Achaeans and Arzawa formed a coalition against the Hittites, in various periods.‎

‎A[YSE] MUHIBBE DARGA, (1921-2018).‎

‎Hitit sanati.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. In special slip-case. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In Turkish. 373 p., ills. Hitit sanati. Darga was a Turkish archaeologist. She was the granddaughter of Darugazade Mehmet Emin Bey, Sultan Abdülhamid's first chamberlain, the poet and translator of Jules Verne's novels from French into Turkish. Darga was born in Istanbul in June 1921 and was brought up by French governesses. She studied in Paris and Istanbul. Her father was a doctor and because of her father's professional obligations, she traveled through the Anatolia of the 1930s with her family. Roman and Greek history, debates on art and literature were the staple fair at the dinner table of this intellectual family of the late Ottoman era. Moreover, the family celebrated all religious rituals of the city like Christmas, Easter, Ramadan and sacrificial festivals, organizing fancy dress parties. Darge attended Istanbul University's Hittitology Department at the beginning of the 1940s. She would meet many notables of Archeology at this faculty, founded by Prof. Theodor Bossert who fled from Germany to Turkey. Her enthusiasm and extravert personality, excellence in French and German and of course passion for Archeology drew attention. After Prof Bossert discovered Karatape, a very important excavation site from Hittite era, Darga accompanied him in late 40s. She learned a lot from her tutor on the significance of history and archeology, and the Turkey of those days, during their travels and investigations on horseback. After her researches on Archeology in Germany and France, Darga concentrated on philology and then attained her professorship. In her book Woman in Anatolia, she indicated the status of women in this land and in her Hittite Art; she drew the attention of not only intellectuals but also the general public. This is Turkish Edition.‎

The little-known details and inner workings of the Ottoman harem are now on display in a new exhibition that opened this week at Istanbul's historic Topkapi Palace Museum. A joint effort between the Topkapi Palace Museum and the Ankara-based Bilkent Cultural Initiative (BKG), "Padisahin Evi: Harem-i Hümayun" is made up of around 300 items, including various personal belongings and objects used by the Ottoman sultans, their wives and children, written documents from the palace's archives and works of art depicting life in the Ottoman court and the harem, such as gravures and miniatures. The exhibit's four sections recount how the harem was built, its hierarchical structure, the daily life in the harem and the lives of the Ottoman imperial family and their relationship with the harem.‎

‎Sedad Eldem: Architect in Turkey.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 25 cm). In English. 175, [3] p., color and b/w ills. "For over fifty years Sedad Hakki Eldem has practised, taught and researched architecture in Turkey. He is undoubtedly the country's most important architectural figure and has played a major role in shaping the visual form of contemporary Turkey - yet his work is little known in the rest of the world. This book, with its authoritative texts, is the first major publication to deal with this exceptional man's work. This monograph is introduced by Hans Hollein, the eminent Austrian architect, who has long been interested in the Turkish-German connections. Suha Ozkan sets the background context to the architect's practice. Sibel Bozdogan covers Eldem's work in several major areas, analysing his concerns over the years, and Engin Yenal rounds off the texts by tracing the more personal aspects of the architect's development. A complete chronology of works includes both biographical and bibliographical information.".‎

‎Everyday life in Istanbul: Social historical essays on people, culture and spatial relations.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 22 cm). In English. 361 p., b/w and color ills. Everyday life in Istanbul: Social historical essays on people, culture and spatial relations. Third Edition. On the map of human existence. Istanbul throughout the age of empire represented the administrative power center. Rome, Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire each took its place in history as a ring of civilization that formed around this center. To view history from this perspective means to read the story of humanity in its pages and, in a sense, to rediscover each time this dazzling star that shone in the skies of Anatolia, the Balkans and the Mediterranean. As mankind discovered Istanbul, it also discovered itself as a passionate traveler on the road leading back to its own past. Istanbul today is a treasurehouse where all our lost values are carefully preserved. A compass for our social identity that has lost its way, a touchstonefor our decaying aesthetic taste, a trustworthy scale for our degenerating sense of justice - Istanbul can assume all these roles while at the same time generously offering us a human experience and store of knowledge capable of answering every question put to it. Everyday Life in Istanbul is a collection of striking images along a journey back to the roots of the Turks' social identity. A work embracing the history of an imperial city in a plane where Man, Culture and Space relate to each other, it is a noteworthy example of the new historiography, which sets up a balance among the social sciences. With its unique style and its theoretical framework set against a multidimensional background extending from politics to culture, from architecture to literature, it is at the same time a contemporary historian's gift to our city.‎
