‎[CALIFORNIE] Passage par terre à la Californie découvert par le Rév. Père Eusebe-François Kino jésuite depuis 1698 jusqu'à 1701, où l'on voit encore les nouvelles missions des PP. de la Compag.e de Jésus.‎

‎Rare carte du missionnaire jésuite Eusebio Francisco Kino, figurant la Basse-Californie, l'état du Sonora au nord du Mexique, et partie de l'Arizona. Elle a été gravée par Charles Inselin pour les Lettres édifiantes et curieuses, écrites des missions étrangères, publié en 1781. La première édition date de 1705. En 1701, le père Kino fit une découverte majeure lorsqu'il démontra que la Californie était une péninsule et non une île, comme on le pensait depuis près d'un siècle. Le cartographe français Guillaume de l'Isle fut le premier à diffuser la découverte de Kino en publiant, en 1722, une carte d'Amérique qui servit pendant longtemps de modèle à la plupart des cartes de cette région. C'est aussi la première carte à décrire avec précision la région, en particulier les positions du fleuve Colorado et de son affluent la Gila, et la localisation correcte des rivières, vallées et montagnes d'une partie du Sonora et de l'Arizona. La carte figure les noms des nombreuses missions établies par le père Kino, avec la date d'établissement pour trois d'entre elles, ainsi que les noms de tribus indiennes comme les Apaches, les Cutganes, les Hoabonomas, ou encore les Cocomaricopas. ‎Straordinaria mappa fisica ed idrografica del mondo, raffigurante le correnti oceaniche, profondità marine ed i vulcani. La carta è tratta dal Mundus Subterraneus del Kircher, studioso gesuita, uno dei primi scrittori sui fenomeni fisici della terra. Il Kircher teorizzava che tutti gli oceani della Terra erano connessi tra loro tramite dei tunnel sotterranei che univano oceani e mari. Tra il Mar Mediterraneo, il Mar Nero, il Mar Caspio e il Golfo Persico, Kircher ha teorizzato enormi gallerie e un complesso interscambio di flussi d'acqua. Questi tunnel sono particolarmente noti tra il Mar Nero e il Mar Caspio e tra il Mediterraneo e il Golfo Persico. L'Antartide è rappresentata lungo la parte meridionale della mappa. A nord è raffigurato un grande passaggio aperto a nord-ovest che corre lungo tutta la mappa. Mostra la Nuova Guinea e una suggestione dell'Australia collegata alla terraferma Australsis Incognita. L'Africa è mostrata con una precisione notevolmente maggiore rispetto a molte mappe disegnate centinaia di anni dopo - in particolare per quanto riguarda il Niger e i sistemi fluviali del Nilo. Il Nord America e il Sud America sono entrambi maldestramente raffigurati, il che indica una conoscenza relativamente sommaria del continente. Extraordinary map, both form the physical and hydrographic point of view, depicting ocean currents, volcanoes and deep-sea chasms. The map is taken from Kircher’s Mundus Subterraneus . The Jesuit scholar, Athanasius Kircher, was one of the first compilers of semi-scientific knowledge about the physical features of the world. This map expounds on Kircher's theories by noting the abysses and the currents they create as well as the locations of the world's known volcanoes. Between the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the Persian Gulf, Kircher theorized massive tunnels and a complex interchange of water flows. These tunnels are noted most particularly between the Black and Caspian Sea and between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. Antarctica is shown along the southern part of the map. In the North a great open northwest passage is depicted running all the way across the map. Shows New Guinea and a suggestion of Australia attached to the 'Australsis Incognita' mainland. Africa is shown with considerably greater accuracy than many maps drawn hundreds of years later – particularly with regard to Niger and Nile River Systems. North America and South America are both wildly malformed, indicating a relatively sketchy knowledge of the continent. ‎Très rare plan de Washington, dessiné par Weidner et gravé par Klinger, issu de l'Almanac de Gotha publié en 1794. Avec liste de légendes numérotées identifiant le Capitole, le Palais du Président (future Maison Blanche), la statue de Washington, etc. La ville de Washington, D.C. (district de Columbia) fut fondée le 24 janvier 1791, au nord de la confluence du Potomac et de la rivière Anacostia, entre les villes de Georgetown et Alexandria, cédées respectivement par le Maryland et la Virginie pour les inclure dans le district fédéral. Celui-ci ainsi créé se présente sous la forme d'uncarré de 16,2 km de côté. Le nom de Washington est utilisé à partir du 9 septembre de la même année, tandis que le nom officiel «District of Columbia», en référence à Christophe Colomb, est consacré le 6 mai 1796. Le plan de la ville est l'œuvre de Pierre Charles L'Enfant, un ingénieur militaire, fils d'un peintre de la cour de France qui propose ses services à George Washington, dont il a fait la connaissance durant laGuerre d'Indépendance alors qu'il s'était engagé en 1777, à l'âge de 23 ans, aux côtés des insurgés américains. ‎Illustré de 5 cartes dépliantes et 25 gravures dont 1 dépliante, édition originale des tome 2 et 3, le tome 1 en seconde édition Pierre Kolbe quitta Berlin en octobre 1704 et ne parvint à son but, le cap de Bonne Espérance, qu’en juin 1705. Employé par la colonie hollandaise comme secrétaire de district, il rassembla de nombreuses informations sur la région, et fournit des observations très complètes sur les mœurs des Hottentots : habillement et nourriture, religion, gouvernement et justice, agriculture (avec un chapitre sur les vins du Cap), chasse et pêche, mines, chirurgie, mariage, accouchement, éducation des enfants, musique et danse, funérailles. Un petit lexique latin-hottentot-français est également présent. Le tome III constitue le premier essai complet de la faune et la flore du Cap. Atteint de cécité partielle, Kolbe rentra en Allemagne après un séjour d’une dizaine d’années. Ce récit fut d’abord publié en hollandais et en allemand en 1727, puis traduit en français en 1741. L’ouvrage constituait alors la seule description détaillée de la région et fut plusieurs fois réédité. Ch-3B‎

Three small ones include completely Asia, Baycal Lake, and North Russia. The big one includes a very detailed view of Japan, the Sea of Japan, Korea Strait, Korean Peninsula, Korean Bay, Yellow Sea, Shangai, Mongolia, Manchuria, and East Russian lands. No info about the cartographer. "The Cartographer Plotting School was opened to train the cartographers, especially when they were needed on military issues in the Ottoman State. Since there are differences between land maps and sea maps (in terms of measurements), the institution of surveyors emerged. When surveyors were needed also in the Navy, students at the Naval School were trained on this issue, and the gap for surveyors was covered in this way."
