‎Deux estampes lithographiées et coloriées à la main, illustrant la guerre américano-mexicaine ou guerre du Mexique, qui opposa les États-Unis au Mexique entre 1846 et 1848. Elles ont été dessinées par Carl Nebel et lithographiées par Adolphe Bayot, pour l'album intitulé The War between the United States and Mexico Illustrated, embracing pictorial drawings of all the principal conflicts, avec un texte de George Wilkins Kendall. L'album a été publié à New York et à Philadelphie en 1851. La première estampe figure la bataille de Palo Alto, première bataille majeure de la guerre du Mexique, qui se déroula le 8 mai 1846 à 8 km de Fort Texas, aujourd'hui Brownsville. Au premier plan, l'armée américaine, vêtue d'uniformes bleus, fait face à l'armée mexicaine au loin, avec un grand champ de bataille ouvert et rempli de fumée des canons. Nebel a représenté les différentes divisions militaires telles que la troisième infanterie, le deuxième dragons et la cinquième infanterie affrontant les lanciers mexicains, avec la batterie de l'artillerie volante du major Ringgold aidant à l'assaut, et la batterie d'artillerie légère du capitaine Duncan. Au premier plan se trouvent également des chariots tirés par des bœufs, transportant des caissons de munitions pour les deux canons que l'on voit au centre de la première ligne d'infanterie. Sur la droite figure le général Zachary Taylor, sur son cheval blanc prénommé Old Whitey. Devenu un héros national après avoir mené les troupes américaines à la victoire, notamment lors des batailles de Palo Alto et de Monterrey, Zachary Taylor fut élu 12ème président des États-Unis en 1849. La seconde estampe représente la bataille de Chapultepec, qui se déroula les 12 et 13 septembre 1847. On voit ici l'assaut du château de Chapultepec par la division dirigée par le général Gideon Johnson Pillow. Situé au sommet d'une colline d'une soixantaine de mètres de haut, le château de Chapultepec gardait l'approche ouest de la ville de Mexico. Au premier plan, les troupes américaines tirent depuis des rochers sur la colline en contrebas du château, tandis que les troupes mexicaines tirent au fusil et au canon depuis les murs du château. Au sommet du château flotte un drapeau mexicain. En 1836, le Texas, qui appartenait au Mexique, se révolte et se constitue en république indépendante. En 1845, le Congrès américain vote l'annexion du Texas. La guerre du Mexique est déclenchée l'année suivante. Le Traité de Guadalupe Hidalgo signé le 2 février 1848 met fin à la guerre. Par ce traité, les Mexicains reconnaissent l'incorporation de la république du Texas comme État de l'Union, et cèdent un immense territoire de 1,36 millions de km2 aux États-Unis pour la somme de 15 millions de dollars américains. Cers territoires correspondent aujourd'hui à la totalité des états de Californie, du Nevada et de l'Utah, et parties des états de l'Arizona, du Colorado, du Nouveau-Mexique et du Wyoming. De toutes les lithographies de la guerre du Mexique, les douze planches de Kendall et Nebel sont peut-être les plus populaires et les plus précises. Kendall connaissait le Mexique car il y avait été plusieurs années auparavant en tant que prisonnier avec les Texans capturés lors de l'expédition de Santa Fe. Il était aux côtés du général Zachary Taylor à la bataille de Monterrey, peut-être comme l'a suggéré un écrivain, pour se venger dans une certaine mesure du traitement que lui avait infligé les Mexicains. Il était également aux côtés du général Winfield Scott pendant la campagne du Sud. Carl Nebel vivait également au Mexique depuis plusieurs années. Il avait produit l'un des plus beaux et des plus rares ensembles d'estampes mexicaines dans l'ouvrage intitulé Viaje pintoresco y arqueolójico sobre la parte más interesante de la República Mejicana, publié en 1836.
