Perciò è molto giusto che la chiesa sia paragonata al mare: in principio, all'entrare della folla fedele, essa rigurgita da tutti gli ingressi delle sue onde e poi, mentre il popolo prega tutto insieme, scroscia come il riflusso di onde spumeggianti, quando il canto degli uomini, delle donne, delle vergini, dei ragazzi fa eco ai responsori dei salmi come l'armonioso fragore delle onde. This American composer favored the classical style but with an American twist; his four operas include "The Pipe of Desire" remembered as the first American composition performed at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York but his best known work is his "Leaves of Grass" inspired symphonic poem "The Mystic Trumpeter" 1904. ANS 1p 7¼" X 10½" Westwood MA 10 November 1938. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. Two faint horizontal folds. On his imprinted personal letterhead Converse pens in his large handsome script a grateful appreciation to an admirer: "Your appreciation of my music gives me great satisfaction and encouragement. United Kingdom: circa 1835. 1835. Good. - 18 words penned in black ink on a fragment of a sheet of paper mounted on a piece of slightly heavier paper 4-3/8 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide. Signed "T Cooke". There are tiny scraps of gray paper on the verso of the mount where it has been removed from an album. Good. <p>Cooke informs his correspondent that he is away and will be unable to meet with him until later in the week. Though only a fragment of the note paper is present the note itself is complete.<p>Musician Thomas Cooke 1782-1848 was born in Dublin. He was appointed musical director of a Dublin theatre at a young age. At the termination of that engagement he sang in English operas and later after retiring from the stage he acted as director and composer at Drury Lane and Covent Garden. He was noted for his facility both in composition and singing. At an 1820 benefit besides singing he performed solos on nine different instruments. He was also successful as a teacher.
