‎8vo. 1 p. Letter of recommandation for the British pianist and composer Henry Litolff to the music critic and publisher François Dufour at the Revue et Gazette Musicale de Paris. Fétis lauds Litolff in the highest tones, ascribing "veritable originality" to him: "M. Litolff qui vous remettra cette lettre vous est connu de nous comme un grand artiste ; il va à Paris pour y faire connaître des belles compositions dans lesquelles se trouve ce qui est si rare aujourd'hui, la véritable originalité. Je ne doute pas de votre bon vouloir à son égard ni de la sympathie de la rédaction de la Gazette Musicale. Je vous serai très obligé pour ce tout ce qui sera fait en sa faveur." - The Revue et Gazette Musicale de Paris was the result of the merge of François-Joseph Fétis's own Revue musicale (1827-1835) and Maurice Schlesinger's Gazette musicale de Paris that had only been founded in 1834, one year before Schlesinger bought Fétis's Revue. - Largely forgotten today, Henry Litolff was admired at his time as a virtuoso and composer by the likes of Franz Liszt, who dedicated his First Piano Concerto to him. He is also remembered as the founder of the Collection Litolff (today part of Edition Peters), a highly regarded publishing imprint of classical music scores. - On stationery of the director of the Conservatory of Brussels. - Minimally creased.‎

To the singer Mme. du Chanoy in reply to her questions about the ballet "Atalante et Hippomène" (1769), giving a short biography of its author, the violinist and composer Pierre Vachon (1738-1803): "Je suis heureux de pouvoir répondre aux diverses questions que vous m'adressez concernant le joli air d'Atalante et Hippomène: 1. L'auteur de cet ouvrage est Vachon, Violoniste d'un talent remarquable qui, après avoir vivé à Paris pendant 30 ans environ, entra au service du roi de Prusse, en 1784 (presque à la même époque que Dupart), et mourut à Berlin, en 1802. 2. Vachon avait débuté, comme compositeur de musique dramatique, par Les femmes et le Secret, et par Sara, opéras comiques remplis de mélodies naives et suaves. Luckhardt etc. [...]". - Alban Förster erhielt während seiner Schulzeit Unterricht in Violine, Musiktheorie und Komposition, besuchte von 1866 bis 1869 das Dresdner Konservatorium und war als Konzertmeister in Karlsbad sowie Stettin tätig. "1871-81 erster Violinist der Hofkapelle Neustrelitz, wechselte er 1881 als Lehrer für Chorgesang und Harmonielehre an das Dresdner Konservatorium und war seit 1882 Hofkapellmeister in Neustrelitz. 1903 wurde Förster zum Professor ernannt. Er komponierte Klavier- und Violinstücke, eine Symphonie in C-Dur, Lieder sowie mehrere Opern, darunter 'Die Mädchen von Schilda' (1887)" (DBE).‎

‎The idea to assemble an Album Amicorum Albert Dunning - a Festschrift to celebrate the 65th birthday of the distinguished musicologist - came from within the Faculty of Musicology of Pavia University. And to accomplish that aim, thirty scholars - colleagues, friends and pupils - have brought together their separate skills. Dunning?s long career dedicated to musicology has spanned at least four decades; and throughout, it has had a specifically international character. His studies at the University of Amsterdam were crowned in 1969 with a doctorate and a dissertation entitled Die Staatsmotette: 1480-1555. The work was duly published and immediately established itself as a Standardwerk. There followed the years of research in Vienna and Munich, then those of teaching and research at Tubingen, Syracuse (NY) and Poitiers. A brief interlude in Frankfurt was succeeded by a longer period in his home country at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, the Rijksuniversiteit of Utrecht and the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies of Wassenaar. Since 1988 Albert Dunning has been a professor of History of Modern and Contemporary Music at the University of Pavia?s Faculty of Musicology, based in the city of Cremona. The essays collected in the present volume pay a tribute to Albert Dunning?s preferred fields of research: the vocal music of the Humanist and Renaissance period and the music of the 18th century, with a special partiality for Mozart and Locatelli. Regarding Locatelli, Dunning has not only issued the fundamental monograph Pietro Antonio Locatelli: der Virtuose und seine Welt, but also directed the (recently completed) critical edition of the great violinist?s Opera Omnia. The bulk of this Album Amicorum is therefore devoted to contributions on the music of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods. The occasional incursions into other areas of inquiry are to be understood as a reflection of the broad interests that Dunning has constantly cultivated, especially in his teaching. ‎The volume comprises a complete edition of the large manuscript Panciatichi 27, compiled at the beginning of the sixteenth century: 185 compositions (parts of masses, motets, Magnificat sections, litanies, lamentations, dances, instrumental pieces, frottole, laude, chansons, etc.). Nearly one-third of the compositions have Italian texts. The introduction takes into account the complex relationships with some 600 concordant sources, both poetic and musical, manuscript and print. Some compositions are closely related to printed sources of the early sixteenth century: several pieces were copied from publications by Petrucci and the Canzoni nove of Antico (1510), which helps in dating the manuscript. The work of a single scribe (apart from two pieces), the manuscript was evidently compiled for practical purposes, as is evident from the small format, the absence of decorative elements, erasures and corrections, alternative readings, duplications of parts of the texts, and the intriguing presence of arabic numbers at the ends of many pieces, related to the number of semibreves in the composition or its parts. It has been suggested that Panciatichi 27 was copied in northern Italy (Mantua or Ferrara); further evidence ? in particular a repertorial connection with Augsburg, Staats- und Stadtbibliothek, MS 2? 142a ? points to Mantua. The commentary on each composition includes a complete list of concordances (many newly discovered) with bibliographical references and an evaluation of the relationships with concordant sources.
