HAVERLIN, Carl (lyrics) and ROBINSON, Earl (music)
Illinois People: In Honor of the Illinois Sesquicentennial Anniversary
Chicago: Illinois Sesquicentennial Commission n.y. Paperback. 4to. Stiff printed wrappers spiral bound. 118pp. Very good. Front outer wrapper only slightly age toned and edgeworn. Probable sole printing of this "Dramatic Cantata" commissioned by the State of Illinois in 1966 for its 1968 celebrations -- a mimeograph of Robinson's hand-drawn score penned on "Les Fulle Music Papers" music notation paper. This copy came from the collection of RALPH G. NEWMAN 1912-98 chairman of the Illinois Sesquicentennial Commission and founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop and in turn came from the collection of Newman's old friend CARL HAVERLIN 1899-1985 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar radio pioneer and president of Broadcast Music Inc. BMI whose collection he acquired upon Haverlin's death. This appears to be Haverlin's working copy. Page 12 bears a 2" X 2" slip tipped at lower right with note penned in what we believe to be Haverlin's hand: "STRANGER: one of the Indians speaks alright Tell the man what you've done with his land. Tell him. Tell him what you've been doing for him lately." Occasionally a line or two of music and lyrics are scribbled out in black ballpoint and here and there a phrase of lyrics are added which can be difficult to differentiate from the printed lyrics. Several mimeographed replacement pages have been lightly tipped in at several spots and a few mimeographed replacement pages are laid in loose. Separate from this oversize spiralbound book there is a mimeographed single-page "Instructions for INSERTS" page and a 21-page typescript stapled at upper left of additional material. How many copies of "Illinois People" were published in this homespun format is unknown; likely extremely few only enough to accomplish its 1968 premiere. Robinson 1910-91 was a folk singer and prolific composer often remembered for his labor anthem "Joe Hill." A unique copy of this very scarce score. Illinois Sesquicentennial Commission paperback

HAYDAR EFENDI [Ali Haydar Gürbüzler], (Naqshbandiyya Khalidi shaykh, The last shaykh of Ismet Efendi Dergâhi), (1870-1960).
[A UNIQUE 'IJAZATNAMA' GIVEN TO TURKISH POET ASAF HALET ÇELEBI BY SHAYKH OF KHALIDIYYA] A manuscript autograph ijazatnama [i.e. licence, certificate] including a mystic assent written for Turkish poet Asaf Halet Çelebi's skills in poetry, literature and music signed 'El fakir el-hakir'ül-ibad Haydar'.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph ijazatnama [i.e. License, or diploma for assent] signed by Ali Haydar Gürbüzler written for famous Turkish mevlevi poet Aasf Halet Çelebi, (1907-1958). 18x11,5 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 8 lines. It starts with "Huve". Dated November 20, 1928. A short qasida on verso signed by 'Mustafa'. Ali Haydar Gürbüzler, known as Ahiskali Ali Haydar Efendi [i.e. Ali Haydar Efendi of Meshketia], the Turkish lawyer, lecturer, professor, clergyman, the mystic is also the last sheikh of the Ismet Efendi Lodge located in the district of Çarsamba, Fatih, in Istanbul. Asaf Halet Çelebi [or, Asef], (1907-1958), was a Turkish mystical poet. Although not very widely known, due to his erudite and often foreign-influenced style, he is considered to be Turkey's first surrealist poet. In his youth Çelebi was still influenced by Ottoman court literature, but starting from 1937 he adopted Western poetic styles and techniques, such as free-form verse. In his poems one finds themes originating in the cultures of Persia and India. As a librarian, Çelebi had a lot of time and opportunity to read, and his readings stood at the base of his poetic work. An often recurring theme of his poems is philosophical ideas which he found, for instance, in Buddhism. From there he took names and terms with vast philosophical connotations, such as Siddhartha and Mara, which, for the non-initiated, created an obstacle in understanding his work, although he did provide explanations in his prose. "Edîb-i Rusen-zamir Asaf Halet bey efendi oglumuza, haz-i viran (?) imtihan(?)-i hayat ve mehatira(?) Mazhar-i ihtiram olduklari daima görülmelidir ki herkes sevke gelsin de onlarin ? olmaga çalissin. Saban (?) Asef Halet bey oglumuzun anane-i(?) ilm u feng(?), Siir ve edebiyat ve musikiye intisabini gördügümde kendisinin feyz ve kemalatinin azadiyatini (?) cenab-i feyyaz görmeden tezrii'(?) ve niyaz ile bu mahalli imza eylerim, fi 7 cemaziyelevvel? Sene 1347 - fi 20 tesrin-i sani sene 1928. El fakir el-hakir'ül-ibad Haydar [i.e. Naqshbandiyya shaykh -Hâlidî shaykh Haydar Efendi of Meshketia -Ahiskali Haydar Efendi)].".
