È il 10 dicembre 1964, e lo studio del tecnico del suono Rudy Van Gelder, a Englewood Cliffs, nel New Jersey, è immerso in un'atmosfera religiosamente soffusa, silenziosa, anestetica. Le volute prodotte da Coltrane si addensano in un'aria adamantina: quella stanza è il tempio in cui è appena accaduto qualcosa di prodigioso, e il sacerdote giace esausto nell'angolo, prende fiato e medita. Etereo e sovversivo, realizzato nell'arco di una sola, trascinante session, 'A Love Supreme' è il testamento di un'intera epoca, della quale Coltrane ha saputo interpretare tutte le tonalità emotive e sonore: la poliritmia africana propulsiva e catartica, i tempi dilatati del jazz modale, la litania meditabonda del folk orientale, le vampe del free jazz, il calore intimo del blues e la redenzione orgasmica del gospel. Il risultato è un magma incandescente e liturgico, in chiave minore, vertiginosamente preciso, sincronizzato, ma sempre sull'orlo dell'improvvisazione, dell'ignoto. Je 1 S. (Qu.-)8vo. Jeweils mit eh. Adresse. Beide Schreiben an den Klavierfabrikanten Friedrich Ehrbar. Der Kartenbrief vom 12. Dezember mit der Mitteilung, daß er Ehrbars Einladung "für morgen" nicht annehmen könne, "da ich gezwungen bin, mir morgen Abend einen Gast in der Oper anzuhören". Die Postkarte aus Kattowitz mit Dank "für die freundschaftliche Gesinnung, die sich in der Wahl Ihres schönen Geschenkes und den es begleitenden Worten ausspricht". - Der Brief etwas fleckig und knittrig, die Karte mit unbedeutenden Gebrauchsspuren.

Zusammen 12½ SS. auf 8 Bll. 8vo bis Folio. Der vierseitige Brief vom 5. IX. 1872 an eine "ungetreue Seele", der einseitige Briefentwurf v. 1. XI. 1873 an einen Professor (auf weiteren 1½ SS. Gedichtentwürfe mit Korrekturen und Streichungen), das Manuskriptfragment zu einem Feuilleton (rechts oben mit Rotstift paginiert 3-5; am Ende von Kalbeck signiert) und der Vertrag zwischen der Verlagsbuchhandlung George Westermann und Max Kalbeck über die Herausgabe des Briefwechsels zwischen Paul Heyse und Gottfried Keller (von George Westermann und Max Kalbeck unterschrieben; 3 ms. SS. auf Doppelblatt; Braunschweig, 25. Juni 1914; das hintere Blatt mit Textverlust durch Ausriß).
