X. 1861 als Bewerbungsschreiben auf eine Anzeige: "Indem ich mich auf Ihre Annonce in der Niederrheinischen Musikzeitung beziehe, ersuche ich Sie um gefällige Zusendung des Trauerspiels Spartacus, und bitte Sie mir nöthigenfalls anzugeben, ob die in Musik zu setzenden Stücke mit oder ohne Begleitung des Orchesters gewünscht werden [...]". Bei dem erwähnten Trauerspiel wird es sich um "Spartacus. Trauerspiel in fünf Aufzügen" von Apollonius von Maltitz handeln, das in diesem Jahr erschienen war. - Der zweite, zur Gänze in italienischer Sprache verfasste Brief mit Neuigkeiten zu einem übersandten Offertorium: Leider könne der Komponist und Chorleiter Albert Becker dieses nicht in der Kirche aufführen lassen, da ein Gesangswerk mit solcher Orchestrierung nicht der Mode entspreche und vom Domchor ausschließlich A-cappella-Stücke gegeben würden. Ansonsten gefalle ihm und Becker das Stück sehr gut, und er hoffe auf eine Aufführung von A-cappella-Motetten des Adressaten im nächsten Winter: "Rincresce al Becker - odio partecipo la su opinione - che l'orchestra sia trattata troppo discretamente; quando gli strumenti son ammessi nella chiesa, essi dovrebbero mostrarsi nello splendido dell'orchestrazione moderna. In ogni caso ho poca speranza, di far eseguire l'offertorio qui in un concerto, non già perché non ne sia meno, ma percentuale le nostre società corali seguono soltanto la moda del giorno [...]". Langhans schließt mit Dank für ein übersandtes Programm und den besten Grüßen an "gl'i amici a Venezia: Bassani, Wiel, Soranzo e Faustini" (27. III. 1891). - Teilweise an den Rändern leicht gebräunt und leicht braunfleckig, ein Brief mit kleinen Einrissen in den Faltungen.

Vers 1866, dans le Correspondant, Laprade avait publié sous le titre Philosophie de la Musique des pages où, après avoir rappelé que la musique et la poésie étaient sœurs, deux Muses jumelles, il n'avait pas craint de signaler les abus de la musique contemporaine. Laprade se refusait de placer l'art musical au-dessus de tous les autres. Il le plaçait historiquement après l'architecture, la statuaires, la peinture et la poésie. Il ne fallut pas davantage pour qu'on lui appliquât le vers de Molière """"Cet homme assurément n'aime pas la musique? """"Falloux entra en lice contre lui et combattit avec beaucoup d'esprit quelques unes de ses affirmations. Laprade développa ses arguments et fit paraître ce livre """"Je ne reproche (à mes contradicteurs) que de m'avoir pris pour un adversaire, pour un ennemi du plus séduisant des arts et d'avoir ainsi, malgré moi, imposé à cette modeste et impartiale étude son vilain titre """"Contre la musique"""". Laprade reproduit les pages de Falloux et les fait suivre de sa réponse. C'est un dialogue où les deux hommes, l'homme d'Etat et le poète, alternent avec un égal talent et une verve digne du sujet. Biré en relisant ces pages, songe aux bouviers de Théocrite et aux bergers de Virgile qui se disputent le prix du chant et aiment à terminer leur lutte courtoise par un échange de présents. Très bel exemplaire relié pour Adda, la fille du poète avec son chiffre sur le plat.
