Wood Engraved frontis and full page plates by Charles Copeland featuring Afro-Americans and scenes in the Old South (Virginia); Text ornaments by Frank Myrick; all Drawn, Engraved, and Printed under the Supervision of A.V.S. Anthony. Inked 1889 Christmas presentation. Special gift binding - cloth backed, highly decorated polished white boards; soiled. Stephen Collins Foster was born in 1826 in Lawrenceville now part of Pittsburgh, PA. In 1846 he moved to Cincinnati, OH and became a bookkeeper with his brother's steamship company. In 1849 he published Foster's Ethiopian Melodies, which included the hit dialect song "Nelly Was A Lady", made famous by the Christy Minstrels. Many of Foster's songs were in the minstrel show tradition popular at the time. However, rather than simply caricaturing African-Americans, they show an empathy for the sufferings of the slave rare in works for the mainstream white audience of the time. He was the first white composer to portray blacks as loving husbands and wives, as in this song. written in loving memory of an old slave's dead wife. Hardbound. Very good. BLKAM 1

Sul retro del cartoncino è stampato a caratteri dorati l'indicazione del fotografo con relativo indirizzo "FOTOGRAFIA ROSA / Corso 333 - Piazza Sciarra, Roma". Sempre sul retro del cartoncino, su un foglio a quadretti fissato con due pezzetti di nastro adesivo trasparente, è presente l'indicazione (scritta a mano) dei personaggi ritratti nella foto. STATO DI CONSERVAZIONE: Ottimo.Un personaggio della fotografia è la pianista compositrice Giusepina Veiluva in Cerruti, ritratta insieme alla figlia, al genero e al nipote. Non datata ma, presumibilmente, risalente alla seconda metà dell'800. I quattro lati del cartoncino sono decorati in oro. Fotografia realizzata con una notevole abilità artistica e tecnica.
