(mm. 165x95), 2 opere in 1 volume, p. pelle bazana coeva, dorso a cordoni con decoraz. e titolo oro, tagli marmorizzati, pp. XXXII,195, al frontespizio stemma con simboli massonici (segue) “Chansons de la très-vénérable Confrairie des Francs-Maçons”, précédées de quelques pièces de Poésie, pp. 31. L’opera è molto ben illustrata f.t. (come da Indice) da 9 tavole inc. in rame, di cui 5 ripieg., e da 5 tavole di musica notata. Vi sono raffigurate sia scene di riunioni massoniche, con uomini e donne in costume d'epoca, sia le piante delle logge, le disposizioni previste per determinati riti, le decodificazioni dei cifrari massonici, le rappresentazioni degli oggetti e dei simboli dell'ordine. L'opera contiene "Le secret des Francs/Maçons - Supplément (Réception du Maitre, catéchisme, serment, le chiffre des Francs-Maçons, signes, attouchements, remarques sur divers usages de la Maçonnerie) - Le secret des Mopses révélé (introdotto dalla pagina di titolo con xilografato un cane, emblema dell'Ordine). Cfr. Caillet,III,8506 che cita varie ediz. a partire dalla prima del 1745: "Ce livre n'a d'antimaçonnique que le titre, mais est en réalité un écrit de propaganda maçonnique du XVIII siècle.. L'auteur Perau est l'abbé Gabriel Louis Calabre, littérateur (Paris 1700-67), prieur de Sorbonne sans avoir été ordonné pretre" - Benimeli “Bibl. de la Masoneria”, p. 38 e 165: autore è l'abate Larudan. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED IN THE TEXT: THE IRISH FLAUTIST AND DIRECTOR OF THE BATH CONCERTS ANDREW ASHE Drafts the Notice of a Concert in which he his wife and daughters participated.
<p>pre-1821. pre-1821. Very good. - A sheet of creamy paper 7-5/8 inches high by 7-3/8 inches wide is mounted on stock with glue from the verso. More than 80 words addressed to James Perry owner and editor of the Morning Chronicle signed in the text "Mr Ashe" by Andrew Ashe. "Lady Owen's derniere Musical Converzazione for the Season took place on Monday Eve when between three & four hundred visitors of the first distinction were present. In addition to her Ladyships' accomplished Daughters Performances on the Harp and Pianoforte the musical Department was sustained by Mr. and Miss Nolde; Mr Mrs and the Misses Ashe and Mr Be. whose distinguished and united Talents contributed in the highest degree to the Evenings Entertainment - / Mr Ashe will feel obliged if Mr Perry will have the above taken notice of". There are several corrections with a couple of words crossed out and another penned in. There is a small hole near the top right edge of the page which blends in with the mount and some minor soiling. Once apparently tipped into an album with remnants of gray paper adhering to the right edge of the mount's verso. Very good.</p><p>Andrew Ashe 1756-1838 was born in Northern Ireland at Lisburn. He studied the violin as a young man and was considered a musical prodigy. A Colonel in the British army Count Bentinck had taken the boy under his care whereupon Ashe regularly attended the practices of the Count's regimental band. As a result he became familiar with various wind instruments and took a special interest in the flute. Having been introduced to the recently developed six key flute Ashe abandoned the violin and devoted himself to the flute. He made a much admired public debut in London on February 24 1792 performing a flute concerto of his own composition. In 1799 Ashe married a pupil of Vinanzio Rauzzini the soprano Mary Comer 1774-1843. Between 1801 and 1816 the soon to be famous Ashe sisters were born. Honoria born in 1802 was a pianist and another sister possibly Mary born in 1801 played the pedal harp. During this period Ashe was principal flautist at The King's Theatre London principal flautist of the London Philharmonic Society Professor of flute at the Royal Academy of music and musical director of the Bath concerts. Often longing for his roots Andrew Ashe with his family performed in Ireland several times before settling there in 1823. During the 1820's & 1830's they were one of the most prominent musical families in Dublin.</p> pre-1821.

pp. 66, (14) [Short Hand Alphabets], (8) [Benn Pitman's Descriptive Catalogue]. Fully engraved. Title page elaborately decorated with a border of lilies. Text ruled in black throughout. Inked ownership of C. A. Hughes on front paste down. All edges marbled. 180mm. Original full cloth binding lettered in gold and embossed in blind. Hardbound. Very good. English born Benn Pitman (1822-1910), assisted his brother Isaac in perfecting the latter's system of shorthand phonography (1837). From 1843 till 1852 he lectured on the system throughout Great Britain, and had a large share in compiling his brother's text-books. At Isaac's request he came to the United States in January, 1853, to give instruction in phonography, and settled at Cincinnati. In 1855 he discovered the process of producing relief copper-plates of engraved work by the galvanic process known as electrotypes, for which he was awarded a silver medal by the Cincinnati Mechanics' Institute. The following year he succeeded, in connection with Dr. J. B. Burns, in producing stereotype plates by the gelatine process in photo-engraving. From 1865 to 1867 he acted as the official stenographer during the trials of the assassin, of President Lincoln, the "Sons of Liberty," the Ku-Klux Klan, and other similar government prosecutions. He also edited and compiled the printed reports of these trials. In 1873 he abandoned reporting and became connected with the school of design, now the art academy, of the University of Cincinnati. Atlantic City NJ: The Trader Elliott Co 1915. Softcover. Good. First edition. Quarto. Single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Owner name on the front cover a large tear to the insert but the music remains legible bumping to the corners and soiling and rubbing to the exterior a complete but good only copy. For voice and piano featuring a vocal quartet version as well for two tenors baritone and bass. Plate imprint "'Eleanor' - 3." The back cover features a sample of "Meet Me at the Frisco Fair Tango" also by Trader and Elliott with the somewhat humorous note "For sale where you bought this." The front cover states that this song is "based upon the poem of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe" but there is no poem by Poe with such a title there is the poem "Lenore" 1843 originally published as “A Pæan†in 1831 and the short story "Eleanora" 1842 though the lyrics to this song do not match up well with either. If we were to guess the lyrics here are inspired by the idyllic scenes that open "Eleanora" describing our lovers dwelling happily in "The Valley of the Many-Colored Grass" which according to this song appear to exist "deep in the hills of old Tennessee." A novel piece with a unique albeit ambiguous association to the writing of Edgar Allen Poe. OCLC locates only a single holding and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade. Moscow: N.p. 1892. Plate XII from a set of twenty loose black and white prints originally sold as a set in a portfolio printed in Moscow in 1892. This untitled set of large high quality photographic prints each measures 25" X 18" commemorates some unidentified imperial autograph collection with each print picturing a montage of autographs in specific collecting fields. Subject matters represented include many of the classic areas of autograph collecting: scientists several different artists musicians actors opera performers ballet stars writers and poets statesmen and more. While the signed photographs usually cartes-de-visite letters and other documents depicted in each montage are international in scope there tend to be more Russian go figure! and French persons. "Ballet et Opera" is a quaint heavy stock print consists of a montage showing nine cartes-de-visite or cabinet size photographs six of them signed one with a signed card and two alongside Autograph Notes Signed of Virginia Zucchi Sigrid Arnoldson Libia Drog Deycha-Sionitzky Leopoldine Loscher Marie Petipa Luigia Cerale Eugenie Mravine and Lydie Heiten. Most are head and shoulders portraits in opulent Victorian garb and headgear; full-length shots in tutus were not mandatory and are present only on Loscher and Cerale. These images are casually splayed out atop what might be an artist's rendering of a ballet stage scene with putti a lyre draped florals etc. Very good. Minor soiling. Most attractive and with large untrimmed margins.These pre-revolutionary prints from the heyday of the czars -- all in handsome clean condition -- are seldom encountered in this country and come direct from our contact. All signatures depicted on these images are remember photographic reproductions of their signatures -- not authentic original signatures. unknown

"Drame et opera" is a handsome heavy stock print consists of a grouping of ten cartes-de-visite or cabinet size photographs eight of which are nicely signed and the other two of which have a signature or ANS overlapping. Depicted are Pauline Lucca G. Fedotoff Eleonora Duse P. Strepetoff N. Wassilieff M. Slavine Marcella Zembrich-Stengel N. Nikouline Alma Fohstrom and Medea Figuener. Duse's is the largest image and takes center stage. All have been artfully arranged hodgepodge-style atop a background of a watercolor scene featuring an eclectic combination of flowers a putti a Greek stage mask a lyre a stage fan etc. Very good. Minor soiling and several small and discreet edge tears that would easily mat out. Overall quite handsome and striking with large untrimmed margins. These pre-revolutionary prints from the heyday of the czars -- all in handsome clean condition -- are seldom encountered in this country and come direct from our contact. Oblong 8vo. 145 x 2 70 mm. 5 ¾ x 10 ½ inches. 10 2 105 3 pp. Contemporary leather spine over paper covered boards; spine and boards rubbed with a 2 x 2-inch circle of paper missing from lower board; paper stock aged brown and lightly foxed small piece missing from title-page not affecting text. This copy with the repeated inscription which reads "Henry Landis his book bought in Harrisburg January 20th 1818." With faults a very good copy of a scarce book. First edition reprinted in Harrisburg in 1822. John Wyeth was a Harrisburg printer who produced music and voice books for ministers and church groups during the first quarter of the 19th century. He was the first printer to use shape-note type in his books for the German religious community. In addition to printing for Rev. Isaac Gerhart he printed music books for James Doll and Johannes Rothbaust. Rev. Isaac Gerhart was a Reformed Minister of the Lykens Valley in Dauphin County Pennsylvania. "In addition to preaching administering the sacraments and conducting catechetical instructions Rev. Gerhart set about to improve church worship. He found a 'great defect' in the singing in those early churches. Since he had musical knowledge and talent he prepared a music book called Church Harmonia." Oblong 8vo. 145 x 265 mm. 5 ¾ 10 ½ inches; 120 pp. Contemporary leather spine blue paper covered boards; binding a bit scuffed and soiled paper stock toned brown with age otherwise a very good copy. Together two parts published in two volumes five years apart; rare survival. Doll's two volumes of church music are the earliest German language music books to use type to print the notes. The type font was called four-shape note system. It copied the type created and first used by Little and Smith in The Easy Instructor published in 1801 and was used by John Wyeth without acknowledgement. In addition to introducing this type to the Pennsylvania German tune-book tradition Wyeth was responsible for the development of Southern folk hymnody. E. C. Wolf records that the 1810 edition was reprinted in 1814 and again in 1821; in 1815 a second volume was issued with a similar title but different content." Program for the 1935 season of this music festival bound by an owner in three-quarters dark green calf & decorative dark green & tan boards titled in gilt on the spine with the original printed wrappers bound in. The boards are bumped darkened around the edges with a light stain to the front board. The leather is rubbed. The spine is faded & chipped with a piece out of the head & the top half of the front joint is split. 204 unnumbered pages. Illustrated with a double-page color map of Florence with portraits & stage designs in color and black & white & with pictorial ads. The inside wraps are lightly foxed else the program contents are very good. <p>This music festival presented choral and orchestral music operas and ballets. Among the works presented in the 1935 season were Rameau's "Castor and Pollux"; Rossini's "Mose"; the ballet "Dafni e Chloe" starring Lorcia and Lifar with choreography by Fokine and scenery by Bakst; Pizzetti's "Orseolo" Verdi's "Masked Ball" and his "Requiem" with Pinza Caniglia and Stignani; Mozart's "Il Ratto dal Serraglio" and his "Requiem"; Rino Alessi's play "Savonarola directed by Jacques Copeau with incidental music by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco; Bellini's "Norma" and Gluck's "Alceste". Conductors included Vittorio Gui Tullio Serafin Bruno Walter and Fernando Previtale. The program notes and synopses are printed in both Italian and English.<p>Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco 1895-1968 who became a well-known composer of film music was considered one of the most significant Italian composers of his generation and was performed by such artists as Gieseking Heifetz Piatigorsky and Segovia. Although he was critical of Mussolini's regime he knew how to take advantage of the opportunities it offered and he wrote the incidental music for "Savonarola" at Mussolini's request. He was a friend both of Carlo and Nello Rosselli the regime's principal opponents both assassinated in 1937 and of Alessandro Pavolino who later became a fanatical fascist leader.<p>On the inside front cover of the book the owner has penned an "Operatic Diary" listing 31 operas attended with theatres dates composers and in some cases conductors.<p>Rare. A SUPERB SEPIA TONED PHOTOGRAPH PORTRAIT OF THE GREAT CLASSICAL CONDUCTOR FRITZ REINER BY NICKOLAS MURAY DATED AND SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER.
New York 1929. 1929. Very good. - sc A 9-7/9 inch high by 8 inch wide softly hued sepia photograph depicting the great classical music conductor Fritz Reiner in profile from the chest up. Neatly attired in a three piece suit and tie over white shirt Fritz Reiner's gently softly smiling face appears illuminated by inspiration. The photographer's stamp is embossed on the bottom left of the image. The photograph is mounted by the photographer with glue from the verso into a 15-3/4 inch high by 11-1/2 inch wide creamy white mat. Signed in pencil on the mat at right immediately under the image "Muray" and dated "1929" by the photographer. There are a few spots of abrasion to the emulsion along the top with a couple of spots at the top right corner of the image. A beautiful portrait housed in the photographer's light gray cardboard folder with his pictorial device above his name on the folder's front cover. <p>The Hungarian-born conductor Frederick Martin "Fritz" Reiner 1888-1963 was highly regarded for his performances of Opera and symphonic music. Born in Budapest to a secular Jewish family he studied the piano and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy. Among his teachers was the young composer Bela Bartok. For a time he worked closely with Richard Strauss before moving to the USA in 1922 to take over as condutor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Taking citizenship in his new country he taught at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Both Leonard Bernstein and Lukas Foss where among his students. His appointment as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1953 marked the pinnacle of his career which included landmark recordings.<p>Like Fritz Reiner the photographer Nickolas Muray 1892-1965 was born in Hungary. He was a student of lithography photoengraving and photography. Having fled Europe at the advent of the first World War he settled in Brooklyn where he found work as a color printer. Opening a studio in Greenwich Village in 1920 he was soon commisioned by Harper's Bazaar to do a portrait of the Broadway actor Florence Reed. Harper's Bazaar were apparently happy with his work as they were soon publishing his photographs on a near monthly basis. As his reputation grew New York City's elite and celebrities sought him out to have the portraits taken and in 1926 Vanity Fair sent him to Europe to photograph celebrities in London Paris and Berlin and in 1929 hired him to photograph Hollywood movie stars. Moving away from his earlier work Muray turned to commercial photography becoming famous for his work in color advertising. New York, 1929. unknown

Original theatre programme for a 1938 Shubert Theatre production featuring the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union Players. A fine copy. This theatre programme is unrecorded by OCLC which does note holdings of theatre programmes for several other productions of 'Pins and Needles.' The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union was once one of the largest labor unions in the United States one of the first U.S. unions to have a primarily female membership and a key player in the labor history of the 1920's and 1930's from wikipedia. Prints a detailed list of cast and crew for the production. Pins and Needles was originally written for the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union. It opened on November 27 1937 and ran for four years. According to scholar John Kendrick 'Pins and Needles' was ". the only hit ever produced by a labor union and the only time when a group of unknown non-professionals brought a successful musical to Broadway" see Kendrick 'History of Musical Stage' Part III. The program has been folded twice & there is a very light diagonal crease to each page. There is some light foxing to the margins. Very good. <p>The program for an important pair of concerts conducted in Havana Cuba in 1931 by Russian-born conductor Nicolas Slonimsky. The program includes a 1-page bio of Slonimsky and six pages of his program notes translated into Spanish. The first concert includes Carl Ruggles' "Men and Mountains" and Charles Ives' "Three Places in New England" as well as works by Mozart Arthur Honegger and Ernest Bloch. The second presents Henry Cowell's "Sinfonietta" Amadeo Roldan's "Ritmica" Number 4 Alejandro Caturla's "Bende" and music by Bach Prokofieff and Bartok. The text is in Spanish.<p>Rare. Hardcover bound in black boards backed with black cloth titled in silver on the front cover and the spine in a dust wrapper featuring a photographic portrait of Count Basie. The top edge of the dust jacket is lightly creased with a couple of tiny tears xiv 1 & 400 pages illustrated with a frontispiece and 16 pages of photographs. There is a small brown stain to the front edge of the front endpaper. Very good.</p><p>First edition.</p><p>The book is inscribed by the co-author Albert Murray on the half-title. Murray 1916-2013 was a novelist and a jazz critic. He was the author of "Stomping the Blues" and "The Hero and the Blues". The jazz musicians who have signed are:</p><p>Rudy Rutherford 1924-1995 American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist. He played with Count Basie for three years in the early 1940's. Of him Basie said: "He was also a hell of a clarinet player. Rudy really had that sound on clarinet. That's him in the V-disc take of 'Kansas City Stride' and also most of the other clarinet solos for the next year or so".</p><p>Grover Mitchell 1930-2003 American jazz trombonist. Mitchell was a member of the Count Basie Orchestra from 1962-1970 and again from 1980-1984.</p><p>Butch Miles b.1944 American jazz drummer. He was with the Count Basie Orchestra from 1975-1979.</p><p>Jimmy Lewis 1918-2000 American double bassist. He was with the Count Basie sextet in 1950. Lewis has signed twice.</p><p>Eddie Preston 1925-2009 American jazz trumpeter. He played with Count Basie in 1963.</p><p>Frank Wess 1922-2013 American jazz saxophonist and flutist. According to Count Basie "Frank Wess is the man who really brought the flute into the jazz scene". Wess played with Count Basie from 1959-1964.</p><p>Buddy Tate 1913-2001 American jazz saxophonist and clarinetist. He was with Count Basie from 1939-1948.</p><p>Frank Foster 1928-2011 American saxophonist flutist and composer/arranger. Foster was a frequent collaborator with Count Basie. Foster has signed twice.</p><p>Freddie Green 1911-1987 American swing jazz guitarist. Green played rhythm guitar with the Count Basie Orchestra off and on for nearly 50 years.</p><p>Bill Hughes 1930-2018 American jazz trombonist and band leader. Hughes was a member of the Count Basie Orchestra from 1953-1957 and later from 1963-2010.</p><p>Eddie Durham 1906-1987 American jazz guitarist trombonist and composer/arranger. Durham played with members of the Count Basie Orchestra in the late 1930's. He was a pioneer of the electric guitar in jazz.</p><p>Benny Powell 1930-2010 American jazz trombonist. Powell played in the Count Basie Orchestra from 1951-1963.</p><p>Ermet "E.V." Perry c.1912-2000 American jazz trumpeter.
