[African-Americana – Music – Dance – Ragtime / Tango Craze] Europe, James Reese; Dabney, Ford T
Castle Innovation Tango
New York: Jos. W. Stern & Co 1914. Folio sheet music illustrated color pictorial cover. 5 pp. including cover 10 ½ x 13 ½ inches. Typical light edge wear; bright example with strong color. Excellent. A classic dance-era publication composed by James Reese Europe 1881–1919 in collaboration with Ford T. Dabney 1883–1958 written for the celebrated ballroom team of Vernon and Irene Castle at the height of America’s tango craze. Europe already emerging as one of the most important Black bandleaders of the early twentieth century served as musical director for the Castles and helped translate Afro-American rhythmic idioms into the social dance repertoire of white high society. The Castles were famous not just for their stylish athleticism but also for their boldness: as a white dance troupe they had hired an African American orchestra as accompaniment and an African American musical director at a time when integration was exceptionally uncommon. The publication predates Europe’s celebrated wartime leadership of the 369th Infantry “Hellfighters†Band and represents his pre-war commercial output in New York’s Tin Pan Alley orbit.

Overall an interesting piece from the Pre-Harlem Hellfighters period of Europe’s career. One of several Castle-related compositions by Europe. OCLC 471600821 locating three copies. Jos. W. Stern & Co unknown

[African-Americana – Music – Dance – Ragtime / Tango Craze] Europe, James Reese
Castles in Europe. The Innovation Trot
New York: Jos. W. Stern & Co 1914. Folio sheet music illustrated color pictorial cover. 5 pp. including cover. Approximately 13 ½ x 10 ½ inches. Light edge wear and minor surface creasing; very good overall with strong color to the cover. A dance-era publication composed by James Reese Europe 1881–1919 and introduced by the celebrated ballroom team Vernon and Irene Castle during the height of the early twentieth-century social dance craze. The cover features a photographic image of the Castles in mid-step against a vivid purple field. Europe was already emerging as one of the most important African American bandleaders of the period through his work directing the Castle House Orchestra which accompanied the Castles’ dance demonstrations and performances in New York. As noted in Library of Congress program materials on the Castles:

“In 1914 the most famous exponents of modern social dance were Vernon and Irene Castle. Their revolutionary style did away with bulky moves associated with dances of the late nineteenth century and replaced them with elegant and streamlined athleticism. The Castles brought a new wave of popularity to dancing and much of their popularity was due to their daringness; the white Castles had hired an African-American orchestra to accompany them in a time when such public integration was nearly unknown. James Reese Europe 1881–1919 served as the Castle’s musical director.â€

Publications such as Castles in Europe represent Europe’s commercial dance music output during the years immediately preceding his later national prominence as leader of the 369th Infantry “Hellfighters†Band during the First World War. One of several Castle-associated dance compositions issued under Europe’s name during the peak of the ragtime and tango dance craze. Jos. W. Stern & Co unknown

[African-Americana – Music – Early Black Classical Performers / Minstrelsy] Blewitt, Jonathan; Glover, Stephen; Morena, Donna Ma
Musical Bouquet. No. 276. Donna Maria Martinez Morena – Rosa Lee; & Sing Darkies Sing Solos & Choruses as Sung by the Ethiopian Serenaders
London: Musical Bouquet Office 192 High Holborn; J. Allen 20 Warwick Lane Paternoster Row 1850. Folio sheet music 4 pp 9 ½ x 13 ¼ inches. Lithographed title with portrait illustration. Minor edge wear and light toning; very good. An early printed musical tribute to the Afro-Cuban singer Donna Maria Martinez Morena one of the earliest Black vocalists to achieve international recognition on the European stage. Morena was born in Havana to free Black parents and recognized early for her musical ability and intellectual promise. She was sent to Spain for formal study at Málaga and later admitted to the Royal Musical Conservatory of Madrid under the patronage of Queen Christina. By the mid-nineteenth century she was appearing in prominent theaters in Paris and London and was widely admired for the purity and range of her voice. Contemporary commentators sometimes referred to her as “The Black Malibran†comparing her to the celebrated Spanish soprano Maria Malibran while others regarded her as one of the few singers capable of rivaling the famed Swedish soprano Jenny Lind.

The lithographed title page depicts Morena seated with a guitar framed by romantic landscape vignettes and identifies her beneath the portrait. The music included in the issue reflects the complex musical culture of the period. The second song printed here “Rosa Lee; or Don’t Be Foolish Joe†composed by Jonathan Blewitt appears alongside “Sing Darkies Sing†composed by Stephen Glover and presented as sung by the Ethiopian Serenaders one of the most prominent blackface minstrel troupes performing in Britain and the United States during the 1840s and 1850s. The juxtaposition of a portrait honoring a distinguished Black concert singer with minstrel repertoire illustrates the contradictory environment in which genuine Black musical achievement and racialized stage caricature circulated simultaneously in nineteenth-century popular entertainment.

This piece forms number 276 of the Musical Bouquet a London sheet-music serial begun in 1848 and eventually extending to more than 8000 numbers. Early issues such as the present example were issued during the formative years of the series and represent some of the earliest numbers in the long-running publication. Complete at four pages. [African-Americana - Music - African-American Photographers] Polk, Prentice H
Pair of Photographs of Moton’s Sharps and Flats c. 1930s
Tuskegee 1930. Pair of silver gelatin prints measuring 9 ½ x 7 ⅞ and 7 x 5 inches. Residue to versos from removal from scrapbook tear and crease to larger image very good contrast. Very Good. A pair of photographs from the prolific photographer Prentice H. Polk of a band led by Allen Moton the son of Dr. Robert Moton the president of Tuskegee University. Moton was among other things an acquaintance of Ralph Ellison’s at Tuskegee and may have been the inspiration for the car ride in Invisible Man as Ellison recounted a particularly harrowing drive with Moton in his father’s Cadillac with the pianist Hazel Harrison in which Moton was trying to impress Hazelton with his knowledge of philosophy. According to an article in the Tuskegee Herald in 1956 Moton also played with Teddy Wilson at Tuskegee before Wilson joined Benny Goodman’s band. The larger photograph has several of the band members identified in ink on the verso as Allen Moton Morris Lollypop Baker Robert likely Moton also a musician and Crosby. We find no record of the band besides the photograph leaving the possibility open that “Moton’s Sharps and Flats†was not the name under which they performed.

Works cited: Gebhart Caroline. The cover features a posed studio photograph of the well-known ballroom dancers Maurice and Florence Walton who are credited on the sheet as introducing the piece. [African-Americana – Dance / Music] Baker, Josephine; Lara, Agustin; Misraki, Paul; Scotto, Vincent, et al
Three Pieces of Illustrated Sheet Music Showing Josephine Baker in Paris: J’ai deux Amours; Sur Deux Notes; Revoir Paris
Various publishers 1949. Three titles as follows: J’ai deux Amours. Fox-trot chanté par Josephine Baker. Paris: Éditions Salabert 1930. 4 pp. Fine condition;. Near fine condition. A tight visually appealing trio of illustrated Parisian sheet music issues tracing Josephine Baker’s arc from Jazz Age sensation to postwar cultural legend. J’ai deux Amours—arguably her defining anthem—captures the carefully crafted dual identity that propelled Baker’s rise: African American expatriate turned Parisian icon marketed simultaneously as modernist spectacle and cosmopolitan muse. As scholars have noted Baker’s image circulated widely through commercial ephemera such as sheet music covers where graphic design celebrity branding and racialized fantasy converged in the interwar marketplace.1

Sur Deux Notes reflects Baker’s assimilation into mainstream chanson culture and her ongoing collaborations within Paris’s cabaret milieu while Revoir Paris issued after World War II resonates with her decorated service in the French Resistance and her celebrated return to the Folies Bergère stage. Together these pieces offer a compact visual and musical snapshot of Baker’s evolving persona across two decades—part performance artifact part cultural document and wholly emblematic of Paris as a crossroads of Black modernism and popular entertainment.

1 Bennetta Jules-Rosette Josephine Baker in Art and Life: The Icon and the Image University of Illinois Press 2007. The Delights of Harmony contains his Sorrow's Tear 1804 perhaps the earliest American setting of a poem by Thomas Moore as well as his Evening Shade and North Salem both of which are still frequently performed by southern shape-note singers who preserve the singing-school tradition.

"Stephen Jenks' music is representative of the type of music being written at that time in rural New England America a cappella and an interest in melodic writing. However his music contains striking harmonic progressions unusual dissonances and cross relations. In "Weeping Nature" The Delights of Harmony 1804 for example Jenks seems to revel in the clash of the E major / minor chord or in the song "Sorrow's Tear" filled with cross relations between C sharp / C natural. Although many of these result from his use of modal harmony and as previously mentioned strong melodic writing for the individual parts his use of these relations is not simply random they are used to express the text being set." [AMERICANA - MUSIC]
Volume of manuscript music compiled by Noahdiah Merritt.
Hardcover. Fair. 106 manuscript pages. Oblong narrow 8vo 3 x 7 1/2 inches contemporary handmade calf with stiff yapp edges worn top leather detached; first leaf worn 3 leaves with early stitched repairs likely lacking some leaves edges rounded soiling and dampstaining to early leaves. Massachusetts or Vermont circa 1800-10

Noahdiah Merritt 1782-1854 was born in Templeton MA and removed to Vermont by the time of his marriage in 1807. He later settled in upstate New York. Some of his family papers are at Cornell University. Most of the songs in this volume have only melodies with no lyrics. An exception is "An Elegy on the Death of a Child 4 Years Old who was Kil'd by the Roling of a Cartwheal" which fills 15 pages. It may be an original composition; we are unable to trace any of the lyrics. Many of the other compositions in the book were part of the core repertory of American sacred music and had previously been published. Oliver Holden's "Coronation" for example had first appeared in 1793. See Britton American Sacred Music Imprints page 685. Also included near the end are the words only for "Mount Vernon Hymn" by Stephen Jenks a tribute to the late President Washington first published in 1802. Noahdiah's father Noah Merritt was a Revolutionary War veteran claimed in a family history to have been personally acquainted with Washington Edwin Atkins Merritt Recollections page 187. Provenance: The present volume is not inscribed but an inserted card written by his granddaughter reads "Noahdiah Merritt's Song Book about 130 years old property of Mrs. Oliver A. Milner." Cornelia Eliza Merritt Milner 1866-1951 was daughter of Noahdiah's son William Wallace Merritt 1832-1922 who went west to Iowa. An added note on the card explains that the book was purchased in Lincoln NE in 1993. hardcover

[Amos 'N' Andy].
The Perfect Song. Musical Theme of the Pepsodent Hour. Featuring Amos 'N' Andy.

Sheet music 4to 9" x 11" illustrated top cover with title 1 5 1 pp. Some edgewear partial spine split normal aging; otherwise very good. While the Amos 'N' Andy radio show smacked of racism it was quite popular at the time. The show debuted in 1926 and featured two white actors Freeman F. Gosden Amos and Charles J. Correll Andy who appear on the cover in blackface make up. The sheet music "The Perfect Song" appears to have been the theme song for the show. Amos 'N' Andy would actually be converted to a TV show in the early 1950s but would have black actors. This sheet music includes two other songs including one sung by Rudy Vallee.
Chappell-Harms Inc.,
