The Scott Methodist Church was founded in 1909 and was the first African-American Methodist Episcopal Church in Michigan. br. Piero Farulli è stato per trent'anni "la viola" del Quartetto Italiano, tra gli ensemble cameristici più amati nel secondo Novecento, la cui cifra interpretativa costituisce ancora un modello. Ma è stato anche un grande didatta e organizzatore. La Scuola di Musica di Fiesole e l'Orchestra Giovanile Italiana sono tra le sue imprese più note: per decenni hanno attratto e attraggono migliaia di musicisti, appassionati e "amateurs", bambini e comuni cittadini. A questi si sono aggiunti numerosi pedagogisti, musicologi, critici musicali e giornalisti, artisti, amministratori e politici, che hanno osservato le sue imprese per ricavarne un "exemplum", per estendere la cultura musicale a tutti, per una "cittadinanza" veramente matura ed egualitaria, coerentemente con il motto di Piero che definisce il suo ambizioso progetto: "la musica per tutti". L'avventura del "viaggio di conoscenza" negli anni Cinquanta del secolo scorso, a partire da Alan Lomax e dal suo "viaggio in Italia" con Diego Carpitella, per seguire le tracce di altri grandi viaggiatori, anch'essi curiosi e incantati, nell'Europa di allora: Pier Paolo Pasolini, Guido Piovene, Patrick Leigh Fermor, Constantine Manos, Mario Soldati, Ernesto de Martino, Ingeborg Bachmann e Italo Calvino. In quegli stessi anni la radiofonia imponeva una nuova presenza culturale, con vicende e imprese oggi quasi incredibili, nella stretta integrazione con la ricerca e nella costante diffusione delle registrazioni effettuate sul terreno, all'interno del palinsesto quotidiano. Tirata al traino da quei viaggi e da quelle rilevazioni, la nascente etnomusicologia italiana muoveva i suoi primi passi, impegnandosi in una più convincente definizione del proprio oggetto di studio e degli strumenti più appropriati per una sua adeguata valutazione critica.

Poter frequentare musicisti come Paolo Sorge, Florindo Baldissera, Simone Massaron, Paolo Angeli, Elena Càsoli, Elia Casu, Vittorino Nalato, Gisbert Watty, Dora Filippone, Alessandra Novaga, Marco Cappelli, Maurizio Grandinetti, Donato D'Antonio, Eugenio Becherucci e Arturo Tallini è stato per me fondamentale per la mia crescita personale, sia dal punto di vista musicale che umano. Sono persone davvero speciali di cui ho imparato ad apprezzare la musica, le idee, l'istinto, il pensiero e la piacevole compagnia. Il titolo 'Chitarre visionarie' riflette proprio questo loro atteggiamento 'visionario" nei confronti della loro musica e dei loro strumenti: indipendentemente dal fatto che si tratti di musica, classica, contemporanea, rinascimentale, jazz, avanguardia, blues ciascuno di loro si distingue per il particolare e innovativo approccio nei confronti della chitarra e per il libero, a tratti anarcoide, pensiero musicale. Per mettere meglio in risalto queste loro caratteristiche ho scelto di fare solo domande aperte lasciando loro il massimo spazio possibile, si tratta in gran parte di domande indirette, come quelle dedicate all'improvvisazione (mia personale ossessione) o all'ambiente culturale in cui vivono. In altri casi sono state poste a tutti loro le stesse domande, come quelle sui generi musicali."
