‎First appearance of this groundbreaking, classic paper in which Lothar Meyer first fully expressed his ideas of the relationsships between the atomic weight of the elements and their properties. In his ""Curve"" he plots the atomic volumes of the chemical elements against their weights and connects the points to obtain a curve with proonounced peaks and valleys. The periodicity in atomic volume and electrochemical behaviour revealed by this curve is matched by periodicities in other properties, such as fusibility and volatility etc.The ""Periodic Law"" may be stated in the words: The properties of the Elements are a periodic function of (or vary in a periodic manner with) the atomic weight. ‎First French edition - in the authors own form and translation - of Mitcherlich's announcment of his discovery of Isomorphism, stating that similar crystalline form reflect analogous chemical formulae, which Berzelius used in fixing the formulas of compounds. Mitcherlich was at this time an assistent to Berzelius, and the first printing of this classical paper appeared the same year in Akad. Handl., Stockholm. The paper was soon afterward printed in French (the paper offered) and English, and Berzelius discussed it in his ""Jahresbericht"", so that the work quickly became known. - Leicester & Klickstein pp. 306-08.""The statement of the law of isomorphism...marks Mitscherlich's most importent contribution to chemistry - indeed, Berzelius considered Mitscherlich's discovery to be the most significant since that of chemical proportions. Fo these achievements he was the first French to be awarded the Nobel Price in chemistry (1906).The existence of the element fluorine had been well known for many years, but all attempts to isolate it had failed and some experimenters had died in the attempt.""Moissan eventually succeeded in preparing fluorine in 1886 by the electrolysis of a solution of potassium hydrogen difluoride (KHF2) in liquid hydrogen fluoride (HF). The mixture was needed because hydrogen fluoride is a non-conductor. The device was built with platinum/iridium electrodes in a platinum holder and the apparatus was cooled to -50 °C. ‎First apperance of these 4 papers relating his discovery of INVISIBLE ""CHEMICAL"" RAYS, and which, 30 years later, by Henry Becquerel was ""re-discovered"" as radioactivity (1896).The results of these investigations lead to these statement: Some compounds exposed to light exhibit in the dark the same effect as that produced by the direct action of light. - Cardboards impregnated with both uranium nitrate and tartaric acid are ""active"" - The ""activity"" remaining on the exposed cardboard is revealed by its action on a photographic plate - The effect is not due to phosphorescence - The activity is attributed to invisible ""chemical"" rays.It is amazing how closely these experiments resembled those performed by Henri Becquerel 30 years later.""When the work of Abel Niepce de Saint-Victor was brought to light, many persons thought that henri had been aware of these publications prior to his research on uranium. Severel facts seems to support this belief. Henri's father, Alexandre Edmond, had reported several details from Abel Niepce in a book entitled ""Light: its causes and effects"", published 1869. When Henri Carrington Bolton (1843-1903) reviewed in 1869 the work of Abel Niepce, he mentioned a ""remarkable property of uranium nitrate to absorb the actinic rays of light, retaining them in an active condition for a long time"". ‎First printing of this paper in which he described his invention of the so-called ""HELIOCROMS"", a pioneer paper in the development of colour-photography. Niepce de Saint Victor discovered there was a connection between the color that chloride salt produced in a flame with the color light produced on a chloride salt-treated plate. Heliochrome was the name of this process, which enabled Mr. Niepce de Saint Victor to produce copies of color engravings and landscapes. He did not produce daguerreotypes, and soon learned that the images he produced using the heliochrome process were not fixed and began turning gray with increased light exposure. Applying transparent coatings did not prove effective, and therefore Mr. Niepce de Saint Victor soon abandoned this unfeasible method. However, his experiments with heliochrome did lead to the successful daguerreotype color process developed by a New York Baptist minister named Levi L. Hill (1816-1865).‎

‎First apperance of the papers in which Nilson describes his discovery of a new element and its properties, and naming it Scandium. It was the second new element found after Mendeleev's prediction of its existence as ""Eka-Boron"".""Mendeléeff had predicted that another element, which he called eka-boron and which he said would have an atomic weight between 40 (calcium) and 48 (titanium), would some day be revealed. It was discovered in 1879 by Lars Fredrik Nilson.... Nilson extracted 63 grams of the rare earth erbia from gadolinite and euxenite, and converted it into the nitrate. Upon decomposing this salt by heat, as Marignac had done, he obtained some very pure ytterbia and, to his great surprise, an earth that was unknown to him.Upon thoroughly investigating this new earth, he found that it contained an element whose properties concided almost exactly with those Mendeléef had predicted for ekaboron. A more full exposition was published the same year in ""Annales de Chimie et de Physique"", 3me Series - Tome XXIV.""In 1848....Pasteur studied the crystals of tartrates (one of the substances that exhibited the now-clockwise, now-counterclockwise effect) under the microscope and found that the xcrystasls were mirror images of the others. The two crystals resemmbled each other as a right-hand glove resembles a left-hand glove....This was a revolutionary discovery and it took some courage to announce it. A few years before, the well-known chemist Mitscherlich had studies the same tartrate crystals and declared them all to be identical. Pasteur was only a twenty-sic-year-old unknown. neverthelless he announced his findings and went before Biot to repeat the separation ofthe crystals before the eyes of the aged authority in the field. Biot was convinced and Pasteur received the Rumford medal of the Royal Society for his work....Pasteur had thus founded the science of polarimetry in which the measurements of the manner in which the plane of polarized light was twisted could be used to help to determine the structure of organic substance, to follow various chemical reactions, and so on.""(Asimov).
