‎Fourth French edition of this much-quoted work, mainly dealing with metallurgy (as the title in 16th-century Italian meant metallurgy) and all sorts of combustible materials, including fireworks e.g.: chapter IX, The Manner of compounding various incendiary compositions which are commonly called fireworks, chapter X, Methods of preparing fireworks called Girondoles, which were once customarily used in some Tuscan cities for magnificent displays for public Festivities on Solomon Feast Days. ""Biringuccio's reputation derives from a single work, his Pirotechnica, published in 1540...As the first comprehensive account of the fire-using arts to be printed, the Pirotechnica is a prime source of many practical aspects of inorganic chemistry. ‎First edition of Thomsen's main contribution in the field of Thermochemistry, undoubtly the main contribution by a Dane in chemistry in the 19th Century. The paper from 1852 is famous as it is the first statement of a new thermochemical nomenclatura, and the paper contains the first enunciation of the thermochemical affinity principle, which states that chemical affinity, or the attraction between substances, can be measured by the heat evolved when bodies combine. His fundamental thought was that the evolution of heat accompanying a chemical reaction (which he calls 'varmetoning', equivalent to enthalpy change) is an exact expression of the chemical affinity of the reaction.‎

In chemistry Dalton was the founder of ""The Atomic Theory"" (A New System of Chemical Philosophy 1808-27) and with his ""Meteorological Observations"" and supplementary lectures he laid the foundation of modern meteorology, establishing the cause of air's homogeneity and formulating the law of partial pressures. In the attempt to give solid experimental bases for his studies, Dalton laid the foundation of future atomic theory, beginning an experimental inquiry into proportions of different gases in the atmosphere. ‎This is the Dutch reprint (in French) (also called the ""pirated edition"") of the first edition from 1706/07, with the engraved title-page from this. The second edition appeared in 1747. ""In 1741 Neaulme issued a pirated edition which again, apart from variations on the title-page, is identical to the 1706 edition. Encouraged by this pirated edition Frezier wrote a second edition which appeared in 1747 in three differing versions."" (C. Philip, p. 59). Very important reference-work on firewirks. ""Frezier was probably one of the most important pyrotechnics in the mid 18th century..."" (C. Philip, p. 58). He borrows heavily from other authors, but his works are interesting, also as they scrupulously cite the sources. The plates show different kinds of fireworks, with many illustrations on each and the vignettes show displays of fireworks, as this work also deals much with the conduct and displaying of these.‎

After Bergman's death Hebenstreit reedited the work and reprinted the 3 first volumes in Leipzig together with volume 4-6. The copy here is the first Leipzig-edition and the most complete as vol. 1-3 were expanded and contains in all 72 dissertations and memoirs which hereby forms a collection of all the author's scientific papers. - Duveen p. 66 - Partington III:p. 183.‎

One leaf lacks (pp. 17/18) and p. 17 is present in cont. handwriting, but the whole leaf supplied in a fine facsimile on old paper. 2 plates a bit shaved and frayed in margin. Slight browning to htitle, a few minor brownspots. A good copy.‎

‎Scarce second edition. The publisher tells us in the postscript that the book, published 1657, was in much demand and that it was unobtainable, so he was requested by a gentleman (Einen vornehmen Herr) to republish it. This second edition came out without the authors name. It is divided in 2 parts. The first part mainly deals with all kinds of recreative fireworks but also with the making of rockets, fire-water-and storm balls, grenades, pitch, storm wheels and receipts for gunpowder.
