‎Scarce first edition. Nicholson considered it an entirely new work. In the Advertisement is stated ""This work, though formed on the basis of the Dictionary in two volumes quarto, published several years since, by the same Author, is in effect AN ENTIRELY NEW WORK"" the articles being either considerably enlarged, or entirely rewritten, and in every instance being adopted to the present improved state of Chemical Science."" The Appendix contains Humphrey Davy's Bakerian Lecture on the decomposition of the fixed alkalies by electricity.Nicholson in collaboration with Anthony Carlisle constructed a voltaic pile and by this equipment they discovered the evolution of gases by the passage of the electric current through water (the decomposition of water). Osler states that he ""was one of the founders of modern chemistry"".""Sala (following Paracelsus) defined the Spagyric Art as that part of chemistry which has for its subject the natural bodies, vegetable, animal, and mineral, and such operations as tend to the end of rendering them useful in medicine.... its principal operations are separation, subtilisation, and sublimation."" (Partington).""He was an able physician and an excellent chemist, an admirer and to some extent a follower of Paracelsus, an advocate of chemical remedies, an opponent of quackery, and he was able to judge fairly the merits both of the chemical and Galenic systems of medicine then in conflict. Arrhenius chose physics as the principal subject for his doctoral study, but he was not satisfied with his chief instructor, Tobias Robert Thalén, Although Thalén was an eminent and competent experimental physicist and lecturer, he was interested only in spectral analysis. ‎First printing of Arrhenius's paper on northern lights (aurora). he auroral theory was based on radiation pressure of electromagnetic waves and eruptions from the sun. He proposed that during great eruptions on the sun, large quantities of matter, in the form of droplets or dust, are ejected in a radial direction from the sunspots and are pushed out from the sun by radiation pressure. With this theory Arrhenius could explain the high correlation existing between occurence of the northern lights and sunspot activity.‎

‎First appearance of an important pioneer-paper in the history of early photography, in which subject John Herschel was one of the main contributors. The paper deals with the dynamical interplay between photochemistry and photography and is of the greatest importence in applied photography. The later sections of the paper deals with the spectrum of the sun, Herschel's so-called thermographical representation of the spectrum of the sun (with description of the Actinograph, invented by him), rendering the heat radiation visible in the spectrum. This first importent spectrum is reproduced here on one of the plates (in stipple engraving). In this paper he introduces the photographical concepts 'positive' and 'negative' to express, respectively, pictures in which the lights and shades are the same as in nature, or as in the original model, and in which they are opposite.For this large paper John Herschel was awarded the Copley archives winners Prize for 1840.""The object which the author has in view in this memoir is to place on record a number of insulated facts and observations respecting the relations bothof white light, and of the differently refrangible rays, to various chemical agents whic have offered themselves to his notice in the course of his photographical experiments, suggested by the announcement of M. Daguerre's discovery.....The terms ""direct"" and ""reverse"" are also used to express pictures in which objects appear, as regards right and left, the same as in the original, and the contrary....The principal objects of inquiry in the present paper...are the following.
