‎First German edition of this landmark work ""which may be regarded as the first scientific work of its class."" (Ferguson I:p.60) and is considered the ""first modern dictionary of chemistry"".It was transted by Carl Wilhelm Pörner, a chemist at the Meissen porcelain works in Saxony. ""It was made from the threevolume Yverdon (1767) edition, as each of those volumes appeared. Pörner added extensive notes of his own, and there is a separate alphabetical sequence of articles in each volume, as the order of entries was not the same in German after translation from the French. Although he did not know the author's name, the Dictionnaire having appeared anonymously, Pörner was enthusiastic about the book but preferred not to call it a dictionary. He regarded it as a useful general guide to chemistry rather than a mere explanation of the meanings of chemical terms and entitled it (in translation) General conceptions of chemistry, in alphabetical order."" Titriermethode was the first successful compendium in this new field of analytical chemistry"" It went through eight new editions between 1856 and 1913 and was translated into several languages. Mohr invented many new titration procedures and examined and often improved most of the older ones. Many methods and designs of apparatus bear his name: the Mohr test for iron and chloride determination, the Mohr pinchcock burette, the Mohr balance for the determination of specific gravity, and Mohr’s salt (ferrous ammonium sulfate) are evidence of his skill in the laboratory. In all around 800 pp. 12 engraved plates. 6 large folded tables (Tables of Nomeclatures, Tables of Chemical Compounds, Table of Correspondence of Thermometers). Text in general clean, a few leaves with toning, plates intact but with some browning and foxing. 2 Tables with some dampstaining. Plate V as frontispiece.‎

‎Scarce first edition. Nicholson considered it an entirely new work. In the Advertisement is stated ""This work, though formed on the basis of the Dictionary in two volumes quarto, published several years since, by the same Author, is in effect AN ENTIRELY NEW WORK"" the articles being either considerably enlarged, or entirely rewritten, and in every instance being adopted to the present improved state of Chemical Science."" The Appendix contains Humphrey Davy's Bakerian Lecture on the decomposition of the fixed alkalies by electricity.Nicholson in collaboration with Anthony Carlisle constructed a voltaic pile and by this equipment they discovered the evolution of gases by the passage of the electric current through water (the decomposition of water). Osler states that he ""was one of the founders of modern chemistry"".""Sala (following Paracelsus) defined the Spagyric Art as that part of chemistry which has for its subject the natural bodies, vegetable, animal, and mineral, and such operations as tend to the end of rendering them useful in medicine.... its principal operations are separation, subtilisation, and sublimation."" (Partington).""He was an able physician and an excellent chemist, an admirer and to some extent a follower of Paracelsus, an advocate of chemical remedies, an opponent of quackery, and he was able to judge fairly the merits both of the chemical and Galenic systems of medicine then in conflict.
