This book is intended primarily for students in technical and pre-engineering technology programs or other programs for which a coverage of basic mathematics is required. Chapters 1 through 19 provide the necessary background in algebra and trigonometry for analytic geometry and calculus courses and Chapters 1 through 20 provide the background necessary for calculus courses. There is an integrated treatment of mathematical topics from algebra to calculus which are necessary for a sound mathematical background for the technician. Numerous applications from many fields of technology are included primarily to indicate where and how mathematical techniques are used. However it is not necessary that the student have a specific knowledge of the technical area from which any given problem is taken. It is assumed that students using this text will have a background including algebra and geometry. However the material is presented in sufficient detail for use by those whose background is possibly deficient to some extent in these areas. The material presented here is sufficient for three or four semesters . . . Fourth Edition 1st Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket As Issued. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. These concepts are then used to establish a classification of decision analysis models. The remainder of the book deals with the detailed development and analysis of decision and inference problems. For example axiomatic development of utility and subjective probability is covered in Chapter 6. Decision analysis models under uncertainty single-stage multi-stage game theory and decision analysis with sampling are presented in Chapters 9 to 12. Even though the main objective of this textbook is to study decision problems under uncertainty one chapter is allocated to decision problems under conditions of certainty e.g. analysis of investment decisions and linear programming in order to present in a sense the other side of the coin. EXCERPT: PREFACE - This book is a substantial revision of the first edition. Considerable portions of the text have been entirely rewritten with greater attention to clarity of exposition. Some new material has been added such as stem-and-leaf diagrams. Chebyshev's Theorem significance probability paired t-tests and prediction intervals. Certain topics have been reorganized to streamline the material and make it more teachable. A large number of drill exercises have been added in appropriate places to prepare the student to tackle word problems. Also there are many new applied exercises and the chapter tests have been expanded. An additional feature of this edition is the use of color to highlight important statements and results. More and more academic disciplines are requiring a course in introductory statistics. Statistical methodology has become an important component of scientific reasoning and the areas of its application are numerous. Statistical techniques are now employed in many fields such as engineering education agriculture business biology medicine fisheries natural resources geology communications psychology and ecology. For this reason the treatment in this book is not slanted toward any particular discipline but touches on diverse areas of interest in all walks of life. The student's acquaintance with the fundamentals of statistics developed here should provide a basis for studying specialized methods within his or her field. In preparing the second edition the basic format of the book is left untouched and the order of coverage is much the same as in the earlier edition. Second Edition 4th Printing. Hard Cover. ‎Elements of Statistical Inference‎

‎Boston: Allyn and Bacon Inc. 1974. Corners Spine Boards Bumped; Moderate Shelf Rub to Boards; Spine Slightly Cocked; Edges Lightly Soiled; Slight Yellowing Due to Age. BOOK NUMBER: 563636. CONTENTS: Preface; Chapter 1 Introduction; Chapter 2 Empirical Frequency Distributions; Chapter 3 Descriptive Measures; Chapter 4 Elementary Probability; Chapter 5 Populations Samples and Distributions; Chapter 6 Sampling Distributions; Chapter 7 Estimation; Chapter 8 Tests of Hypotheses; Chapter 9 Two-sample Techniques and Paired Comparisons; Chapter 10 Approximate Tests: Multinomial Data; Chapter 11 Regression and Correlation; Chapter 12 Analysis of Variance; Chapter 13 Nonparametric Methods; Answers to Odd-numbered Problems; Appendix; Index. EXCERPT: Preface - Sociology business and economics agriculture engineering ecology psychology education medicine - these and other disciplines increasingly demand a knowledge of the language and methods of statistics. And increasingly statistics is set as a requirement in the already-crowded program of students in these disciplines. A statistics course designed to meet the needs of such students should be brief ordinarily of a single quarter or semester; it should presuppose no technical background; and it should not require that the student learn a great deal of mathematics first. This book written with such a course in mind presents the student with the statistical techniques he is likely to need in his field of study. It aims at giving him an understanding of the reasoning underlying these techniques for without such an understanding the technique must be learned by rote and hence soon evaporate. The methods covered are not peculiar to one field of application alone but apply to all subjects in which statistics is used. The book also provides a base from which the student can proceed to more advanced work including specialized applications. The mathematical prerequisites have been kept to a minimum: Arithmetic and a little algebra suffice. Chapters 1 through 8 will ordinarily be taken up in sequence; material from Chapters 9 through 13 can then be selected in a variety of ways depending on the length of the course and the interests of the class . . . Concisely and lucidly expressed it is intended as a supplementary text for the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student who has had a first course in ordinary differential equations. The author begins with a discussion of the linear system x = Atx and develops the notions of a fundamental system of solutions the Wronskian and the corresponding fundamental matrix. He then introduces the nonhomogeneous linear equation and the important variation of parameters formula by which following a consideration of the nth-order linear equation the solution of the nonhomogeneous nth-order linear equation is obtained. A chapter is then devoted to the linear equation with constant coefficients. The two following chapters are introductory discussions of stability theory for autonomous and nonautonomous systems. Included here are two results for nonlinear systems Liapunov's direct method and some results for the second-order linear equation. The final chapter takes up the problems of the existence and uniqueness of solutions and related topics. Two appendices-"Series Solutions of Second-Order Linear Equations" and "Linear Systems with Periodic Coefficients"-are also provided and there are problems at the end of each chapter-55 in all. EXCERPT: PREFACE - College Business Statistics is written for students enrolled in business administration programs in colleges and universities across Canada. These students are required to complete a basic statistics course usually in the second year of their program but often they find the course difficult because of the complexity of formulas and array of technical terms. By presenting statistical concepts in easily understandable language this text makes a serious attempt to address the needs of these students. The book originally evolved from classroom notes developed over several years of teaching - successfully student evaluations indicate. These notes were then made into book form at Conestoga College and class-tested for eight years. The Conestoga in-house edition was revised each year taking into account the experience in the classroom the comments given by the hundreds of students who took the course and the suggestions of fellow faculty who used the text for teaching students in different programs within the Business Division . . . ‎Calculus Two: Linear and Nonlinear Functions‎

‎Englewood Cliffs: Prentice-Hall Inc. Previous Owner Markings; Corners Spine Bumped; Moderate Shelf Rub to Boards; Edges Moderately Soiled; Slight Yellowing Due to Age. CONTENTS: 0. Remembrance of Things Past; 1. The Algebra of Rn 2. The Geometry of Rn 3. Linear Functions 4. From Linear to Nonlinear 5. Functions f:Rn-R 6. Scalar-Valued Functions and Extrema 7. Curves: Mappings F:R-Rn 8. Vector Functions F:Rn-Rq 9. Integration in Rn 10. Line Integrals and Stokes' Theorem; Answers to Selected Exercises; Index. EXCERPT: Preface - The heart of this book is the study of nonlinear functions by means of the simpler linear and affine functions. Our guide in this is the elementary calculus procedure of constructing the tangent line a linear object to a curve a nonlinear object. Thus we begin with a study of linear objects. Linear algebra is just this study; it should be viewed as analytic geometry in modern dress. Without it geometric ideas are lost in a fog of equations. We have developed the linear algebra by first studying the algebra of Rn ordinary n dimension space especially R2 and R3 in Chapter 1. Geometry of Rn the inner product is the subject of Chapter 2. Then we introduce the concept of a linear map in Chapter 3. And only after some familiarity with linear maps is acquired do we represent them as matrices and interpret the algebraic operations on maps in terms of the corresponding operations on matrices. This concludes the "linear" part of the book. Chapter 4 serves as a bridge from linear to nonlinear. The differential calculus of several variables is taken up in Chapters 5 6 7 and 8. One measure of the success of approaching calculus of several variables using linear algebra is that students anticipate ideas and theorems. The criterion f'X=0 for a maximum or minimum is but one example. This notation vastly simplifies formulas enabling the concepts to emerge clearly. Chapter 9 discusses multiple integrals. Instead of pushing the difficult ideas of existence of the integral we have chosen to show how to estimate numerically the value of the integral. In this way students grasp the concepts and understand that a proof of the existence of the integral can be made to yield as close an approximation as they desire. Some teachers may wish to use computers at this point of the course. Line integrals and Stokes' Theorem are the subject of Chapter 10 . . . This book is intended for the-possibly mythical-"average" student. Two and three dimension cases are emphasized. We have chosen to write in an informal lecture note style with questions directed to the reader . . . First Edition 1st Printing. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket As Issued. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. EXCERPT: Preface - As in the first edition my overriding objective in this revision has been to help students understand the underlying concepts of calculus as well as its applications. To better achieve this objective I have reconsidered the solved examples in some detail adding new ones replacing some with more illustrative examples and inserting more detail in many. The illustrations are larger clearer and more numerous. Review problems have been added at the end of each chapter and short historical notes about people and events important to the development of the calculus have been included. Also in order to make calculus more meaningful to the student the number and scope of applications have been increased - particularly in the problem sets but also in several new sections devoted primarily to applications. These applications include the use of calculus to solve business and economics problems an analysis of the forces in suspension bridges the catenary exponential growth and decay and the planned use of animal and mineral resources . . . SERIES: This book is in the Addison-Wesley Series in Mathematics; Consulting Editor Lynn H. Loomis. EXCERPT: PREFACE - . . . The topics taken up in this volume meet the needs of the majority of students taking the customary calculus course at a college or university. There is ample material for a two semester or three quarter course of four or five credits. This book leans heavily on the intuitive approach gives many illustrative examples emphasizes physical applications wherever suitable and has a large selection of graded exercises. Definitions and theorems are stated with care and proofs of simple theorems are given in full. Calculus for College Students is a companion to Morrey's University Calculus with Analytic Geometry which presents the same material but at a level suitable for the honor student. When this book is used the better students may wish to use University Calculus with Analytic Geometry as outside reading. Morrey's text goes into the theory in more detail has complete proofs of many of the difficult theorems and in general gives a rigorous soundly based treatment of calculus. Since both this and Morrey's texts use the same terminology and notation the good student will be able to concentrate on mastering the theory. When an unrelated book is used for outside reading the student may waste a great deal of time transposing the presentation into something he understands. . . . Hard Cover. SERIES: The Appleton-Century Mathematics Series; Raymond W. Brink and John M. H. Olmstead Editors. EXCERPT: preface - This book presents a first course in calculus and analytic geometry with enough material for three semesters. It is sufficiently rigorous for the most highly screened students in our best universities yet each new concept is motivated so carefully by a natural intuitive introduction that students with less preparation can profit from it and enjoy it. Seven great basic concepts are stressed: function limit of a function continuity derivative antiderivative definite integral and infinite series. Every effort is made to impress on the student that a mastery of these ideas is indispensable in acquiring a genuine understanding of calculus as contrasted with the mere use of its formulas and techniques in solving problems. At the same time an abundance of material is provided dealing with the degree of accuracy of computed results and with other aspects of the computational work that is now so important for progress in science and technology . . . Second Edition 1st Printing. Hard Cover. Fine/No Jacket As Issued. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Appleton-Century-Crofts Educational Division Meredith Corporation Hardcover‎

‎Numerical Mathematics: A Laboratory Approach‎

‎New York: Cambridge University Press 1993. Numerical Mathematics is a unique book that presents rudimentary numerical mathematics in conjunction with computational laboratory assignments. No previous knowledge of calculus or linear algebra is presupposed and thus the book is tailor-made for undergraduate students as well as prospective mathematics teachers. The material in the book emphasizes algorithmic aspects of mathematics which are made viable through numerical assignments in which the traditional "chalk-and-talk" lecturer turns in part into a laboratory instructor. It guides the student to create the algorithm required for any given assignment expressed in whichever programming language is used on the basis of the underlying mathematics. The computational assignments cover iterative processes area approximations solution of linear systems acceleration of series summation interpolative approximations and construction of computer-library functions. Throughout the book strong emphasis is put upon vital concepts such as error bounds precision control numerical efficiency computational complexity as well as round off errors and numerical stability. The book is not a numerical methods book containing ready-made computational recipes but it is the authors' belief that the material presented in this book is part and parcel of the mathematical foundations that should be acquired by a student in the microcomputer era. 267 pp. Illustrated. First Edition. Hard Cover. New. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Cambridge University Press Hardcover‎

‎Statistical Analysis of Spherical Data‎

‎Cambridge England: Cambridge University Press 1987. Comprehensive text presents a preeminent account of statistical methods for analysing spherical data. The analysis of data in the form of directions in space or of positions of points on a spherical surface is required in many contexts in the earth sciences astrophysics and other fields yet the methodology required is disseminated throughout the literature. Statistical Analysis of Spherical Data aims to present a unified and up-to-date account of these methods for practical use. Text emphasizes applications rather than theory with the statistical methods being illustrated throughout the book by data examples. 329 pgs. Illustrated. ‎Die Gammafunktion: Band I: Handbuch Der Theorie Der Gammafunktion & Band II: Theorie Des Integrallogarithmus Und Verwandter Transzendten‎

‎Bronx New York: Chelsea Publishing 1965. Classic comprehensive text consists of both original volumes of this classic originally published in 1906 in two separate volumes now both volumes are published as one. The first volume is a handbook of the theory of the gamma function. The first part of this volume gives an elementary presentation of the fundamental properties of the gamma function and related functions as applications of the theory of analytic functions. The second part covers properties related to the integral representations for Gamma. The third part explores the properties of functions defined via series of factorials with applications to the gamma function. The Handbook is an often-cited reference in the literature on the gamma function and other transcendental functions. The second and shorter volume covers the theory of the logarithmic integrals and certain related functions. Specific topics include integral representations asymptotic series and continued fractions. 446 pgs. Illustrated. Gilt spine. Minimal shelfwear. First American Edition. Hard Cover.
