‎Potential oder zyklisch-hyperbolische Funktionen I - II.‎

‎(Berlin, G. Reimer, 1832) 4to. As extracted from ""Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, 8. Band, 1832"", without backstrip. Fine and clean. pp. 64-116"" Pp. 194-212.‎

‎First printing of Gudermann extensive and important papers on hyperbolic functions. During 1830ies Gudermann focused his work on these functions and published extensive on the subject. It was later coined the Gudermannian function. The function was introduced by Johann Heinrich Lambert in the 1760s at the same time as the hyperbolic functions. He called it the ""transcendent angle,"" and it went by various names until 1862 when Cayley suggested it be given its current name as a tribute to Gudermann's work in the 1830ies on the theory of special functions. The present paper together with two later published papers were collected in Theorie der potenzial- oder cyklisch-hyperbolischen functionen (1833), a book which expounded sinh and cosh to a wide audience. The issue also contain a paper by the famous Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel.""Gudermann devoted much more attention to the theory of special functions. After the earlier works of Leonhard Euler, John Landen, and A. M. Legendre (Gauss's results were still in manuscript), Niels Abel's studies on elliptical functions, published mostly in A. L. Crelle's Journal für reine und angewandte Mathematik, represented an important divide in treating this area. In 1829 Carl Jacobi's book Fundamenta nova theoriae functionum ellipticarum was published. At the time Gudermann was one of the first mathematicians to expand on these results. Beginning with volume 6 (1830) of Crelle's Journal, he published a series of papers which he later summarized in two books: Theorie der Potenzialoder cyklisch-hyperbolischen Functionen (1833) and Theorie der Modular-Functionen und der Modular-Integrale (1844), which were to have had a sequel which was never written."" (DSB). Gudermann is known today for being the teacher of Karl Weierstrass, who took Gudermann's course in elliptic functions in 1839, the first to be taught in any institute. Weierstrass was greatly influenced by this course, which marked the direction of his own research.‎

‎"HUSSERL, EDMUND.‎

‎Formale und transzendentale Logik. Versuch einer Kritik der logischen Vernunft. Sonderabdruck aus: ""Jahrbuch für Philosophie und phänomenologische Forschung"", Bd. X. Herausgegeben von E. Husserl, Freiburg I. Br. - [THE FINAL CONCEPTION OF LOGIC]‎

‎Halle, Niemeyer, 1929. 4to. A bit later blue full fabrikoid binding. Gilt lettering to spine. Clean and fresh copy. Old owner's signature to title-page. XI, (1), 298 pp.‎

‎First edition of Husserl's seminal work, which contains his philosophy of logic and mathematics. This important work entitled ""Formal and Transcendental Logic"" with the sub-title ""An Attempted Critique of the Logic Reason"" provides us with Husserl's final conception of logic. Though now famous as the father of phenomenology, Husserl was initially a student of mathematics, and in his two first works ""Über den Begriff der Zahl"" and ""Philosophie der Aritmetik"", his early philosophy is developed on the basis of mathematics with the aim to provide a sound foundation for mathematics by combining it with philosophy and psychology. His main work from 1900-1901, Logische Untersuchungen"", probably one of the two most important and influential philosophical works of the 20th century, Husserl establishes a philosophy that asks the question of the essence of the matter of perception as opposed to the form of perception, as well as the meaning of the difference between formal or pure and material laws, truths and determinations, -all based on his strong interest in the relationship between the formalities of arithmetic and of logic. However, it is in his ""Formal and Transcendental Logic"" that Husserl most thoroughly introduces us to the formal character of logic and formulates his final conception of it. According to Husserl, logic is formal, because it is nothing more than the development of pure reason, and pure reason is a formal concept. As such, logic for Husserl becomes the self-interpretation of pure reason (die Selbstauslegung der reinen Vernunft) which is, again, a formal activity. Husserl also determines that there are two formal ways of conceiving logic, one being a tool for judging sentences true or false, and another, which includes knowledge. And so, this work not only provides us with a genetic-phenomenological investigation of philosophy and of the basis of logic, but it also provides us with an insight into the entire inner systematic structure of late Husserlian thought.‎

‎Berlin, Georg Reimer, 1861. 4to. As extracted from ""Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, 1861, band 58. Without backstrip. Fine and clean. Pp. 181-228.‎

‎First printing of these two important papers on gravitational interaction from bodies, such pseudo-rigid bodies, thereby ""opened a new direction"", a direction which later inspired Riemann to turn his attention to the problem""Without the gravitational interaction from another body, such pseudo-rigid bodies havereceived attention in many references. The interest was initiated by Newton in Principia, where he showed that a spinning axi-symmetric self-gravitating body of ?uid that is rotating slowly about the symmetry axis will be oblate. Jacobi in 1834 extended the work of Newton, but also work of Maclaurin, to show that a self-gravitating ?uid also can take on ellipsoidal shapes. The solutions of Jacobi, Maclaurin and Newton were, however, still all rigid. In a frame rotating with the body the ?uid is stationary. Dirichlet and Dedekin, [in the present two papers], respectively, opened a new direction when they found a symmetry that applied to Jacobi's solution generated a new solution in which the body isstationary in shape but the ?uid particles follow elliptical paths in planes orthogonal to a principle axis of the ellipsoid. Dirichlet's paper inspired Riemann to turn his attention to the problem. He gave a classi?cation of the solutions of Dirichlet's equations for which the ellipsoidal shape of the body remains constant. At the heart of this classi?cation lies what is now known as Riemann's theorem: the angular velocity and circulation (i) lie in the same principle plane and (ii) if the angular velocity is parallel to a principle axis then the circulation vector must also lie along that same principle axis."" ‎First printing of these two important papers both closely related to Gödel landmark paper Über formal unentscheidbare Sätze"". Here Gödel applies the extensions of the incompleteness theorems to a wider class of formal systems : ""is already the more modern first-order Peano arithmetic, the system in which Godel in his abstract described his incompleteness results. The passage [in the present paper] envisages the introduction of higher-type variables, which would have the effect of re-establishing the system P, but as one proceeds to higher and higher types, that ""all the [unprovable] propositions constructed are expressible in Z (hence are number-theoretic propositions)"" is an important point about incompleteness. The last sentence of the [1932] passage is Godel's first remark on set theory of substance, and significantly, his example of an ""axiom of cardinality"" to take the place of type extensions is essentially the one that both Abraham Fraenkel [1922] and Thoralf Skolem [1923] had pointed out as unprovable in Ernst Zermelo's [1908] axiomatization of set theory and used by them to motivate the axiom of Replacement. "" (Kanamori, Gödel and Set Theory). ""By invitation, in October 1929 Gödel began at tending Menger's mathematics colloquium, which was modeled on the Vienna Circle. There in May 1930 he presented his dissertation results, which he had discussed with Alfred Tarski three months ear lier, during the latter's visit to Vienna. From 1932 to 1936 he published numerous short articles in the proceedings of that colloquium (including his only collaborative work) and was coeditor of seven of its volumes. Gödel attended the colloquium quite regularly and participated actively in many discus sions, confining his comments to brief remarks that were always stated with the greatest precision."" (DSB)‎

Just three years later he received agrégation in mathematics with the highest rank. In March 1842 he received his doctorate of science, having presented his thesis on the movement of a solid body round a fixed point. Despite his marked academic success in research, Briot still wanted to follow his chosen career as a teacher. He first obtained a professorship at the Orléans Lycée and afterward at University of Lyons, where he re-encountered his school friend Jean-Claude Bouquet, with whom he collaborated throughout his career.During the years 1814-1831 Agustin Cauchy created the basic framework of complex function theory. The results obtained by Cauchy were, however, still only to be found throughout his numerous journal papers, and although Cauchy is known for having stimulated the development of mathematical rigor throughout the field, his own research papers often used intuitive, not rigorous, methods. The joint scientific work of Briot and Bouquet was a profound study and clarification of the analytic work of Cauchy. In a memoire that has remained famous since its publication in 1853, they proposed to establish precisely the conditions that a function must fulfill in order to be developable into an entire series. They also perfected the analysis by which Cauchy had, for the first time, established the existence of the integral of a differential equation. They opened the way to research on singular points and showed their importance for knowledge of the integral. All this work culminated in their extremely influential text book 'Théorie des fonctions doublement périodiques et, en particulier, des fonctions elliptiques'. This work played a decisive role in spreading Cauchy's methods and results to European mathematicians, and for a long time it remained the standard text of the French School. It was translated into German in 1862, and went through several editions. For his outstanding contributions to mathematics the Académie des Sciences in Paris awarded Briot their Poncelet Prize in 1882 shortly before he died.‎

‎Identity, Variables, and Impredicative Definitions + Vicious Circle Principles and the Paradoxes. (In Journal of Symbolic Logic, Volume 21, Number 3, 1956 + Volume 22, Number 3, 1957). - [HINTIKKA'S TRANSFORMATION RULES]‎

Vol. 21, 3: pp. 225-248 (entire issue: pp. 225-336)" Vol. 22, 3: pp. 245-249 (entire issue: pp. 225-336).‎

‎First printing of these two important, but for long overlooked, articles, which together constitute Hintikka's attempt to cope with Wittgenstein's elimination of identity as proposed in the ""Tractatus"". With the translation rules that Hintikka here put forward, he is the first to try to carry out Wittgenstein's suggestions systematically. The Finnish born philosopher and logician, Jaakko Hintikka (born 1929), Professor of Philosophy at the University of Boston, is generally accepted as the founder of formal epistemic logic and of game semantics for logic. He has contributed seminally to the fields of philosophical and mathematical logic, philosophy of mathematics and science, language theory and epistemology. Independently of Evert Willem Beth he discovered the semantic tableau, and he is famous for his work on game semantics and logical quantifiers. In 2005 Hintakka was awarded the Schock Prize in logic and philosophy, the philosophical equivalent to the Nobel prize, ""for his pioneering contributions to the logical analysis of modal concepts, in particular the concepts of knowledge and belief "". In the 1950'ies Hintikka took it upon himself to follow Wittgentein's suggestion of elimination of identity suggested in the ""tractatus"", and in the two offered articles, he succeeds in constructing a logic without identity. The main point of the two connected articles is to show that variables can be used in two ways. One way does not exclude coincidences of the values of different variables (inclusive interpretation of variables), the other does (exclusive interpretation of variables) and can be either weakly or strongly exclusive. He now claims that in the ""Tractatus"" Wittgenstein adopts the weakly exclusive interpretation of variable and then proves that the weakly exclusive quantifiers are able to express everything that the inclusive quantifiers plus identity can express, and without a sign for identity, - for the first time systematically supporting Wittgenstein's claim that identity is not an essential constituent of logical notation. ""There are a number of references to the exclusive interpretations of variables in current logical literature. An exclusive reading of variables was, in effect, suggested by Ludwig Wittgenstein in ""Tractatus logico-philosophicus. As far as I know, however, no one has previously tried to carry out his suggestions systematically. Several misconceptions seem to be current concerning the outcome of an attempts of this kind. Carnap expects radical changes in the rules of substitution. If I am not mistaken, however, at least one form of the exclusive interpretation may be formalized by making but slight alterations in the axioms and/or in the transformation rules of the predicate calculus. Also I hope to say that it is not correct to say (as Russell has done) that Wittgenstein tried to dispense with the notion of identity. What a systematic use of an exclusive reading of variables amounts to is a new way of coping with the notion of identity in a formalized system of logic. Under the most natural formalization of the new interpretations, the resulting system is equivalent to the old predicate calculus (with identity): every formula of the latter admits of a translation into the former, and vice versa."" (Vol. 21, Nr. 3, p. 228).""A deviation from standard English. Recent discussion serves to bring out, amply and convincingly, the utility of observing the ordinary correct use of words and phrases for the purpose of clearing up philosophical problems. In this paper, I shall endeavour to show, by means of an example, that the reverse method may have its interest, too. "" (Vol. 21, Nr. 3, p. 225). ""This note is a sequel to the previous paper of mine which was entitled ""Identity, variables, and impredicative definitions"" and published in this JOURNAL, vol. 21 (1956, pp. 225-245. That early paper served to call attention to the dependency of the set-theoretic paradoxes on the interpretation of the variables that may occur in the critical ""abstraction principle"". (Vol. 22, Nr. 3, p. 245).Besides these two articles, the two issues also include other important articles within logic, e.g. Quine, ""Unification of Universes in Set Theory"" and Symonds and Chisholm ""Inference by Complementary Elimination"".‎
