Although the technology of producing and delivering chemical and biological weapons has existed for decades the nerve gas attacks in Matsumoto in 1994 and Tokyo in 1995 by an apocalyptic religious cult and the subsequent revelation of the cult's attempts to acquire and use biological weapons have added a new dimension to plans for coping with terrorism. Traditional military approaches to battlefield detection of chemical and biological weapons and the protection and treatment of young healthy soldiers are not necessarily suitable or easily adapted for use by civilian health providers dealing with a heterogeneous population of casualties in a peacetime civilian setting. For these reasons the Institute of Medicine IOM in collaboration with the Commission on Life Sciences CLS was asked by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Emergency Preparedness OEP to: collect and assess existing research development and technology information on detecting potential chemical and biological agents and protecting and treating both the targets of attack and health care providers and provide specific recommendations for priority research and development. This report describes current civilian capabilities as well as ongoing and planned research and development R&D programs. It identifies some areas in which innovative R&D is clearly needed and assesses current R&D work for its applicability to coping with domestic terrorism. The threat of domestic terrorism today looms larger than ever. Bombings at the World Trade Center and Oklahoma City's Federal Building as well as nerve gas attacks in Japan have made it tragically obvious that American civilians must be ready for terrorist attacks. What do we need to know to help emergency and medical personnel prepare for these attacks Chemical and Biological Terrorism identifies the R&D efforts needed to implement recommendations in key areas: pre-incident intelligence detection and identification of chemical and biological agents protective clothing and equipment early recognition that a population has been covertly exposed to a pathogen mass casualty decontamination and triage use of vaccines and pharmaceuticals and the psychological effects of terror. Specific objectives for computer software development are also identified. The book addresses the differences between a biological and chemical attack the distinct challenges to the military and civilian medical communities and other broader issues. OPERATION BUSHMASTER is a field training exercise FTX conducted at Fort Indiatown Gap Pennsylvania. During this exercise senior USU medical students Graduate Nursing students and international military medical officers are formally evaluated on their medical knowledge and leadership abilities in a simulated resource constrained far forward tactical field setting. Students assume leadership positions in a joint battalion aid station where they are presented with operationally current reality based missions and operational problems for which they must plan and execute while simultaneously managing the medical care of simulated Disease and Non-Battle Injury DNBI patients combat stress casualties and combat trauma casualties. Before "Operation Bushmaster" students go through a two-week military contingency medicine course during which they are presented operational problems and receive pre-deployment training just as they would prior to a real deployment. This classroom phase includes lectures and is focused on team building. The students become a cohesive unit as they prepare to deploy to a fictional country facing challenges from rebel forces. Divided into two groups the students were sent sequentially to spend four days at this large National Guard base nestled in the mountains just north of Hershey Pennsylvania. They were assigned to one of four platoons - all undergoing identical scenarios planning and executing missions while simultaneously caring for a variety of casualties ranging in severity from fatigue to gunshot wounds. The exercise featured nearly 1000 encounters with simulated patients. While patient care is a large part of their training leadership communication skills and logistics are just as important. Students were assigned various roles during the exercise such as patient administrator triage officer medical logistics or litter bearers transporting patients. They frequently rotated positions allowing every student to practice each role. The students also were graded on how well they performed key positions including platoon leader ambulance team leader surgeon and combat stress control officer. They were graded on a number of factors such as communication and leadership skills as they were observed by more than 60 faculty members from Uniformed Services University as well as from across the country. On one side is a colorful illustration of a little girl sitting with a doll by her feet pointing to a bowl in front of a dog appearing to suggest that the dog eat. Below this primary image on the handle part there is an image of a cow jumping of the moon. There is writing by the doll which is unclear and may be part of the illustration. The other side had the following text. When Your Stomach is "Acting Up" Not pleasant to discuss but far less so to have diarrhoea. And when you are so troubled you want prompt relief. For more than three score years Dr. Thacher's Mixture formerly called Dr. Thacher's Diarrhoea Mixture has been a dependable relief for such intestinal irritations. Lisley gave it to us. Henry Savage Thacher was born in 1826. He was a chemist and apothecary and the inventor of a line of proprietary medicines sold under his own name from his laboratory in Chattanooga TN. The line of products included "Liver and Blood Syrup" and proclaimed its power to cure among other things drowsiness jaundice liver complaints impure blood pimples loss of appetite sour stomach sleeplessness pains in back and sides sick headaches.and the list goes on and on. Dr. Thacher's was a historic brand that flourished nearly a century ago in Chattanooga Tennessee. Back during those difficult post-Civil War reconstruction days all kinds of peddlers sought to cure a laundry list of common ailments through formulations. The carefully-guarded secret recipes promised pure and potent concoctions promised to do everything from easing the pain of childbirth to healing sick blood or mending a broken heart! Dr. Thacher's carefully curated line of Syrups was originally developed at a Tennessee laboratory. In 1915 Waldrop's Pharmacy was a fixture in the city of Tallapoosa as evidenced by a photograph found on the internet of the business area. Rexall was a chain of American drugstores and the name of their store-branded products. The stores having roots in the federation of United Drug Stores starting in 1903 licensed the Rexall brand name to as many as 12000 drug stores across the United States from 1920 to 1977. The "Rex" in the name was derived from the name of Ellen M. Regis who developed "Rexall remedies" and from whom the company purchased the mark. Allied Drug Products Co unknown

The Medical NBC Battlebook is designed for the AMEDD soldiers in the field or in training. The U.S. Army Public Health Center APHC is a United States Army element headquartered at Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland United States. As a forward operating agency of the United States Army Medical Command APHC is responsible for providing technical support and expertise in the areas of preventive medicine public health health promotion and wellness to military units around the globe. The Army Public Health Center has broadened the scope of the public health mission to meet today's Army's needs: to enhance Army readiness by identifying and assessing current and emerging health threats; developing and communicating public health solutions; and assuring the quality and effectiveness of the Army's Public Health Enterprise. A predecessor organization was the United States Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine. It initial predecessor was the Army Industrial Hygiene Laboratory which was established in 1942 under the Army surgeon general. DR. J.H. MCLEAN’S VOLCANIC OIL LINIMENT
Four-page pamphlet offered in English and five other languages for Dr. J.H. McLean’s Volcanic Oil Liniment a patent medicine pain reliever claiming to “penetrate to the very bone†and heal ulcers necrosis of the bone the foulest sores pimply eruptions skin worms and more. According to the brochure it could also be used on horses cattle sheep hogs and dogs.<br /> <br /> The liniment was produced and marketed by James Henry McLean 1829–86 who apprenticed with a mining camp physician and worked in a drug store before partnering in 1849 to distribute George A. Westbrook's "Mexican Mustang Linimentâ€. Just a few years later in 1851 McLean launched his own liniment putting him in direct competition with his former partner.<br /> <br /> McLean graduated in 1863 from St. Louis Medical College and continued to expand his patent medicine business. He employed an international sales force and operated fleets of wagons ships and railroad cars to facilitate distribution. McLean was elected U.S. Representative for Missouri to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Thomas Allen. He served from December 15 1882 to March 3 1883.<br /> <br /> At the time patent medicines like this were gaining in popularity but had no regulation. They often contained alcohol or stronger fortifications such as opium cocaine or morphine. But with the backing of President Theodore Roosevelt a Pure Food and Drug Act was passed by Congress in 1906 paving the way for public health action against unlabeled or unsafe ingredients misleading advertising the practice of quackery and similar rackets.<br /> <br /> As testament to McLean’s shrewd marketing efforts this brochure is printed in English German French Spanish “Bohemian†and Swedish/Norwegian. It is printed on tissue thin 11†x 14†newsprint paper in black ink with illustrations folded in half to comprise four pages. The scarce circular is lightly stained with some minor edgewear. No copies are found in the marketplace or OCLC. Holdings of McLean’s Almanac and recipe booklet can be found at the Library of Congress and the American Antiquarian Society. unknown
