Girls Education Memory Album with 24 handwritten entries from friends and classmates of a Young Woman in Hillsboro IL from 1853-1862. A memorabilia recording many aspects of the first major movement of women's education in the United States brings depth to a movement that was groundbreaking in its time but today is largely at risk of disappearing from the historical record. 24 entries in various hands dated 1853-1862. Memory albums held autographs sentiments and reminiscences of friends and schoolmates similar to yearbooks today. "To Hettie Oh! do not say Farewell We we are going to sever Tis like sudden passing bell of Friendship gone forever. Oh seek some other language than the mournful truth to tell Say parting friends may meet again but do not say farewell." Red cloth boards with a gilt motif of a girl scattering flowers in center. 7 3/4 x 6 in. Gilt edges. 130 pages. Album includes one frontispiece engraving and 5 color illustrations of flowering plants and birds. 2 hand-drawn pictures of flowers and a hand-drawn pencil illustration of a young woman cut out into a paperdoll. Most entries from Hillsboro IL but include other location such as St. Louis. Young women particularly those finishing their time at a female academy and preparing to leave their school friends tended to be the ones to create friendship albums. Entries from 1920-1921. Handwritten in ink on inside front cover "Nellie Johnson CCHS '24". Clinton Community High School in Clinton IL. First homework entry dated December 14 1920. Includes chapters on grammar literature devices and poetry. 2 large hand-drawn literary analysis diagrams. Chapter book reports with teacher's corrections and very interesting full-page hand-drawn "Diagram of Plots" on George Eliot's "Silas Marner". "At the New Year's party Priscilla said she was obliged to the same gowns and Nancy because she was five years older than her. And at the first sight of Godfrey Cass that Nancy saw and her arrival there then the Squire came in and gave a loud greeting to her father." Diagram highlights 3 major plot points: The Reward The Substitute and The Theft. Hand-drawn chart of rising action for Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. Includes original essays on "Character Sketch of Portia" and "The Treatment of the Jews". "Antonia was a rich merchant in Venice. He owned several large ships which would sail to other countries and procured cargo of spices and other merchandise. Shylock the Jew as a wealthy Jew but all he had was money and jewels. That was all he could own."<br/><br/>"Outlines of Parts of Speech" such as nouns verbs participles and pronouns. "Personal pronoun is a pronoun that shows by its form whether it denotes the person speaking the person spoken to or the person spoken of." Final section contains notes on "Narrative Poetry" and defines terms such as meter stanza and scansion. Includes original poem "Nature Pictures". "I. The sun came up upon the left out of the sea As the sun raised the next morning It looked like it came out of the sea because the ship was so far from land that there was nothing else in sight only the sea so it looked like it came out of the sea. // II. "According to Shakespeare May your life be 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' with everything 'As You Like It.'" Others look forward to the young ladies' futures beyond high school. "When you are old and sipping tea Remember your classmate of 1930." "Little sporty roadsters Little hugs and kisses Often make a little miss Change her name to Mrs." Also kind notes from the Sisters who led the school largely wishing their student's future happiness. "The happiest heart that ever beat was in some 'quiet' breast That sound the common daylight sweet and left to heaven the rest." "Although these words may simple be they bear you more than eye can see: 'God hold you ever in His care!'"<br/><br/>Many lovely pieces of ephemera documenting a teenage girl's social life included as well. Dried flower pressed on page 11. Very vibrant colorful table markers from dances with motifs such as ballet dancers harlequin clowns and bright birds and butterflies. Photographs and other items show the vibrant personality of the original owner. 13 photos of a girls posting in front of school and walking with nuns. Several items reference girls activity in sports such as news clippings on a women's speed skating competition and a program for a regional high school Gymnastics demonstration. Cutting that list Honor Roll and local events at the high school. Several programs and tickets for shows at local theaters in Detroit. Unique pair of "Shadowgraph Glasses" create a 3-D optical illusion with a blue lens for Left Eye and a red lens for Right Eye. Includes 1929 cutting from a Japanese-language newspaper. Mildred Benjamin" written on first page in blue pen. Handwritten biographical reports of all those with aforementioned portraits. Also includes incomplete entries for Tennyson and George Eliot. "John Greenleaf Whittier was born in Haverhill Mass.the house still stands in which Whittier was reared.Whittier was taken with illness while visiting at the home of his friend.he had a slight paralytic stroke which produced a difficulty in taking food o medicine and it was plain that he could not be removed to Annesbury where he had always hoped to die. He was conscious to the last and was grateful to everyone. He had little acute pain. He lay all night in peace and died in the morning."Charles Dickens: "The boy Charles was not strong but nevertheless before he was ten years old he was obliged to earn his own living. He was placed in a blacking warehouse an old ramshackle house near the Thames. The scenes in which he was brought up were the most degrading ones possible.During this time he spent much of his time in the reading room of the British Museum.In 1842 he made his first trip to America. Just before going he wrote Oliver Twist in which he exposed the abuses of the poor law system." Press clippings on final pages for articles on Charles Dickens and John Greenleaf Whittier. Girls Education Japan Photograph album from a girl student in Japan c. 1926. Filled with 78 original silver gelatin print photographs of classmates school activities and social outings. Original cloth and red boards. 10 x 7.5 in. "Photo Album" printed on front cover. Pasted label on the final page with some information on the original owner dated 1926. Photographs of various small sizes from 1.75 x 2.5 inches to 3 x 5". Many images are school portraits of teenage girls in their matching uniforms posing either individually in pairs or small groups. Occasional photographs of teenage boys as well including one with the sitter dressed in a samurai outfit. Photos of a field day with outdoor footraces marches and performances. A few later photographs of older young women in civilian clothes posing by a river and strolling in a park together. These may be images of some of the younger students years later as adults. Most of the images show figures in Western styles clothes although 2 photographs show women dressed up in kimonos. Images lack captions but there is an autograph on one photograph. Some soiling to cover and 8 sheets of album are detached from spine. Unique images are in very good condition. unknown books

Women Education Photo album of girls primary school 1931-1938. 8 3/4 x 12 in. Original blue cloth board covers. 58 Gelatin silver print black and white photos of various sizes from 2.5 x 3.5 in. to 5.5 x 4 in. Follows a class of girl students over the course of 7 years.<br/><br/>Album kept by schoolteacher of the students at All Saints Girls' School in London. Inscription on inside front cover: "From 1931- Recording many happy hours with All Saints . Candidates Central Islington." Begins with "The Original Class" and identifying class leaders including one small child identified as "Baby". In 1935 identified as the "Jubilee Year" celebrating 25 years of King George V students had photos taken in Kensington Garden while performing a "Jockey Dance" and national dances for England Ireland Scotland and Wales. Children are dressed up in the garden as a "gypsy" jockey and "butterflies and elves." There are also pictures of girls in short dresses posing as part of the Skipping Team. In other images students wear plaid skirts ties and hats while performing a "Scotch Dance"; they also wore special costumes for different dances such as the "Mountain March" the "Shoe maker" and "Cochin-China". Includes note on what the girls were wearing for each yearly photo: "Blue and white check dresses with white collars & cuffs" and 1937 Coronation Year King George VI / Red white & blue dresses". Early Americana Girls' Education Cross-Stitch Sampler Made Together by 2 Eight-Year Old Girls 1814
1814. Girl's Education Original cross-stitch alphabet sampler from two 8-year old girls. 1814. In frame: 15.5" x 20.5". Alphabet cross-stitched in capital and lower case letters. Vowels numbers 0-9 and floral designs in backstitch. Girls' names Verna L Haywood and Elizabeth Hope stitched below along with "at best 1814" "Age eight years" and "Give thanks to the Lord". This piece has interestingly been worked by both girls. The fabric upon which they stitched have been sewn together in a vertical line down the center. The stitches on either side are distinct; the capital letters on the right half for instance are generally stitched in a more straight line while the letters on the left side have greater variation in height.Samplers were valuable parts of girls' education from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries as it demonstrated both their skill in needlepoint and their achievements in literacy. From the 1800s the very first schools and academies for young women in America had their students create needlepoint pieces with decorative motifs such as verses or the entire alphabet being stitched on the sampler. The parents of these young women proudly displayed their embroideries as showpieces of their daughter's talent and status. In recent years these samplers have become important in museum collections as representations of early American female education. Some light staining and fading to fabric. A nice example of an embroidered map sampler which were an important component of girls' education in Britain and America from 1770-1840. This one meticulously labels all of the English counties the seas and channels and includes part of Scotland to the north and the east coast of Ireland and is signed by its maker one M. Hume of Bristol.<br/><br/>"One academic subject that was consistently considered important for both boys and girls after reading writing and arithmetic was geography. Geography was considered a science at this time and . it was the first science taught to girls in the US . Many girls were taught to read but not write. With the exception of some diaries or letters or of marginalia there is little to tell us how children learned to read do arithmetic or write. Map samplers . by students are tangible examples of women's schoolwork. Hand-writtten recordings of the school song for West Side Junior High in Little Rock AK. "Here's to West Side Dear of West Side Your the school we love the best Wit your colors gaily flying You have always stood the test When we leave you We believe you will always be our greatest pride And we will show you how much we owe you Will always boost for you our Dear West Side." Comes with October 1934 issue of "West Side Junior Life" student newspaper. Pages are filled with poems and lines from classmates over the years. Many of the inscriptions are pithy short poems or lines. "Dear Charlene I wish you health I wish you wealth I wish you gold in store I wish you heaven after death What could I wish you more" "In your mud puddles of affection Let one tad pole swim for me." "When you're in the kitchen frying meat think of me and my big feet." "If you're within and I'm without I'll think of you without a doubt." Some broke with this convention. "I do not know any poem but I pity the person that worries their head off to get one." Other include more personal notes on their memories together. "Remember our Spanish Class and the study hall before it." Two newspaper clipping portraits of school friends pasted into book. Two large pencil drawings-one of an infant child playing with a toy and one of a fashionable young lady going for a walk. Junior Membership card for the The American National Red Cross in Little Rock AK issued 9/4/25. Handwritten list of 52 girl classmates. Partial image of school from newspaper clipping pasted to inside back cover. West Side Junior High School was founded in 1917 as an educational establishment and a community center. Original blue cloth folder. Identification photo of teenge girl pasted inside dated 19.III.1916. Original silver gelatin print 2.75 x 2 in. This young student wears a dark pinafore uniform and a fashionable hat and looks confidently out at the viewer. This was mere months after Bulgaria declared entered World War I in October 1915. Normal education was disrupted for most Bulgarian students during the Balkan Wars 1912-1913 and WWI 1915-1918 so this girl was likely very grateful for the opportunity to study. This dates from the 1920s after WWI had ended but a period in which militarization in Europe was considered of upmost national importance. The early 20th century was also a period of great development for women's education as more schools and programs opened to girls. 19th cent Girls Education Mathematical notebook for girl grammar school students in Providence Rhode Island c. 1876. Handwritten arithmetic problems fill each page of the book. 8 ¼ x 7 in. Original boards. 214 pages. Unpaginated. First 30 pages of notebook were later repurposed to record Deaths and Marriage notices clipped from newspapers for friends and family from 1879-1884. Handwritten label on front cover "Deaths and Marriages". Original owner name written inside front cover "Laura E. Healy Room No. 2 Point Street Grammar School September 6th 1876." Book is filled with handwritten math problems and their solutions. Some of them are challenging practical situations while others are more straightforward. "In an orchard ¾ of the trees are apple trees 1/10 peach trees and the remainder Pear trees which are 20 more than ⅛ of the whole. How many trees in the orchard" "How many rolls of paper 9 yards long and 1 ½ ft wide are required to cover 4 sides of a room 18 ft x 16 ft and 9 ft high. Deducting 8 feet off for windows and doors." "Bought a shawl for $18. How shall I mark it so that I may make a dis. of 10% and yet sell for $18". "Divide 6 ⅓ by 9 ½." "Divide 427 by 833 and the quotient by 7/10." "What is the interest of $567 from Jan. 7 1870 to July 27 1872 at 9%" Includes a loose handwritten note in child's hand addressed to Miss L.H. between her and a friend: "You be the gal which I adore Your beauty none surpasses I guess by gosh I love you more than buckwheat cakes & 'lasses". Handwritten report on "The Story of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving". "There was a King that sent all the people of England to go to the Church of England but there were some people that did not like that at all and sometime they had a little meeting in their cellar so that they went tot Holland and all the Holland people welcomed the Pilgrims and the Pilgrims stayed in Holland for two years. Then the Pilgrims went over to America in the boat called the Mayflower and the Speedwell but the Speedwell broke down so that all the Pilgrims and the people in Holland were so sorry to have them leave.they had a very hard time crossing the ocean. They landed on Plymouth Rock in 1620 4 days before Christmas. They saw a few Indians they said they had better always keep their guns with them. " The last page lists things to be thankful for: "We should be thankful for our homes and kind parents and our food for our nice things to with for clothes for flowers and for being well." Commonplace Copy Book of a Young Woman in School
Brimfield MA 1848. Columbian Writing Book #7 Designed for Use in Schools. Blue stitched paper wraps with flag and manicule motifs to front cover and general directions for proper handwriting on rear cover. Completely filled and comprised of 20 densely written manuscript pages in ink and pencil created by Ada N. Kenney of Brimfield Mass who leaves her ownership information in pencil on the front wrap. A lovely and fascinating historical document tracing both the method by which a young woman developed her hand as well as how such lessons served the additional purpose of indoctrinating her into socially-appropriate femininity.<br/><br/>Ada Kenney's copybook contains a neat and precise hand throughout which suggests that she was educated and belonged to the rising middle class. Meticulous and organized Ada breaks her book into two clear sections. The first 9 pages contain precisely copied and repeated sentences such as "Assiduity in labor produces fame and fortune" "Cherish sentiments of charity towards all men" "Discretion of speech is superior to eloquence" and "Immodest words are in all cases indefensible." As the lines get repeated 19 times each in the alphabetical order dictated by the first word it is clear that Ada is being trained in an elegant cursive. Yet the content of the lines and their repetition also serve as lessons to her about the value of female silence virtue and chastity. By the second half of the book Ada commits another 9 pages to carefully copying out poetry; and here her choices push up against the demure repetitions of the previous pages. "Long Fanny Gray" "The Troubedour" Gaily the Troubadour Touched his Guitar and "Highland Mary" are each ballads of romance and flirtation love and loss. These selections suggest a burgeoning interest in courtship and men as well as women's expressions of desire and jealousy. By the final 2 pages Ada shifts into much less organized quotations jotting down random lines of poetry in French and English alongside several names of friends and relatives. <br/><br/>A fascinating and valuable historical document with research potential including but not limited to paleography education theory and practice gender studies literature and poetry and the transmission of folk tales and folk music. unknown books

A fascinating and research-rich notebook in which a young girl practiced her hand in ink and pencil by copying out popular song lyrics folk ballads and poetry. <br/><br/>While the composition book of Hattie Plegge contains no overt indication of the girl's geographical location there are signs within her work that point toward the North. Poetry about General Grant and Abraham Lincoln as well as an original crayon drawing of an eagle marked "Union Forever" suggest that her community belonged to the Union during the Civil War. Additionally though she writes no date school year or age in the book her cursive and her drawings suggest that she was under the age of 12 at the time of composition. As she strives to mature her hand Hattie selects a fascinating array of works to copy out with care; and they provide valuable information about the types of music and poetry that were available to an elementary school girl. Some of the selections come from folk songs such as Billy Boy listed in the Roud Folk Song Index. Others were more widely popular tunes of the time including In the Gloaming 1877 On the Banks of the Wabash 1897 and I Guess I'll Have to Telegraph my Baby 1898. Mixed with these are also longer poems. Though Alice Cary's Suppose is listed as a recommended copybook text in Ballads for Little Folk 1874 others take a more adult political leaning as is the case with suffragist Frances Willard's work Grant is Dead copied out twice the second being more careful and Oliver Wendell Holmes' Old Ironsides. Whether the poetic works were provided by a teacher suggested by a parent or chosen by Hattie herself that give a glimpse into the social influences surrounding her. As a reminder that she is in fact a child there are 6 simple crayon drawings interspersed throughout including a Union eagle a donkey and what appears to be a schoolgirl in a cape.<br/><br/>A rich historical document with research possibilities including but not limited to paleography geography and politics in the post-Civil War era the history of education the transmission of folk songs and folk tales the history of music literature and poetry and gender studies. <br/><br/>Roud Folk Song Index 326. Beauty and the Beast a play manuscript "acted by some of the girls that go to Miss Lacy's school
N.P 1854. Complete 28 page handwritten manuscript play prompt drawn directly from Julia Corner's 1854 adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. Stitched at spine and holding though some pages are loose or delicate. Occasional staining largely confined to margins or rear blanks. Composed in one woman's hand in ink throughout with what appears to be a much younger girl's annotation in pencil to the final pages. The text throughout corresponds with Corner's book with the exception of stage directions occasionally being abbreviated or simplified. We have been unable to locate the "Miss Lacy's School" mentioned in the younger girl's note.<br/><br/>Julia Corner the daughter of a printer became a prolific children's author in her time; and her adaptation of Beauty and the Beast was hailed for "creating quite a sensation among all the middling-size children" according to Eliza Cook's Journal from that year. At a time when there was debate about the morality of performance and theater Corner was noted for "wisely sympathizing with child-natures and she declares her belief in the propriety and profit of theatrical amusement among children"; and Eliza Cook's Journal documents instances of girls in particular gravitating toward the play "settling all the characters for all available friends" and performing at home or school Cook Vol 10. Here we see first-hand evidence of this phenomenon: girls in a ladies' school taking on roles and acting them out for classmates. Further research into the school its location and its class of girls would be enlightening -- uncovering for example if there were multiple prompts for girls who could not access Corner's text whether the manuscripts were done as a handwriting exercise in addition to the performance or whether one individual simply copied this play out as a souvenir of the event. The hand used throughout is elegant and well-trained -- seemingly a grown woman whose spelling corresponds with contemporary American rather than British expectations. <br/><br/>The choice of a fairy tale like Beauty and the Beast also deserves study as it promotes particular feminine qualities -- including respect for authority filial affection and self-sacrifice and modesty -- even within the darker setting of fairies sorcery and punishment. <br/><br/>A unique opportunity for research in fields including but not limited to the trans-continental transmission of fairy tales girls' education the history of performance didactic literature and performance in schools gender studies and paleography. unknown books

Girls' Education Elizabeth "Lizzie" Schuh
Language Arts notebook of a young 12 year old girl in school spanning three years of her education
Wisconsin 1893. Hawthorne Composition Notebook #774 measuring 8.25 x 6.75". Comprised of 70 densely written pages largely in pencil in a single hand with penmanship maturing as pages go on across three years. Lizzie's ownership signature to the front wrap designates her as 12 years old at the start of her composition in January 5 1891. Resulting genealogy research has identified her as Elizabeth Lizzie Schuh born in Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1879. Census records show that she remained in this area through the end of her life. The present composition book is an opportunity to examine how girls were being educated at the turn of the century in the midwest and how that compares to their counterparts to either coast.<br/><br/>It is telling how little of Lizzie Schuh's preteen lessons are overtly gendered. In many notebooks of this kind from the U.K. and East Coast lessons during this age work to indoctrinate girls into an acceptable femininity even in seemingly innocuous ways. Yet here the lessons seem nearly gender neutral -- a possible sign of coeducational classrooms in her school. Throughout the notebook she writes declarative sentences works on active and passive voice practices tenses and memorizes abbreviations. She composes short essays; in the beginning these tend to focus on some piece of nature such as bees or oranges and they incorporate natural science as well as geographical information. Later essays include original short stories and reports on American figures including Daniel Boone and Andrew Jackson. As she progresses her compositions and her hand move toward adulthood becoming more confident and complex. <br/><br/>Perhaps the largest content focus is on areas of etiquette and behavior -- again a space where one might expect more overt gendering. And yet a section on How to Be Polite for example includes common-sense behavior such as "Try to be kind and unselfish" and "When anyone is writing or reading do not stand behind him or look over his shoulder." Some of the advice seems to encourage a kind of working-class or regional modesty: "Do not talk about dress" and "Do not soil your tongue with slang." Correspondence and letter-writing take up the bulk of the rear of the book. Here Lizzie begins by copying out generic letters likely providing by an instructor so she can learn the formalities both of letters and of posting them; later she imagines letters or copies out letters she herself has written and sent out. These appear to train the children for a variety of relationships including personal and familial communications the management of household and businesses and the maintenance of new acquaintances. <br/><br/>A fascinating glimpse into the language and communication development of a young Midwestern girl as she approached adulthood with research potential including but not limited to English language teaching the intersection among disciplines in elementary and middle school the history of coeducation regional education penmanship and paleography gender studies etiquette and genealogy. unknown books

Good. <p>Gladstone became leader of Britain's Liberal party in 1867 and was Prime Minister from 1868 to 1874 the first of three periods during which he held this office. Denis Joseph Rearden was the Liberal party member of parliament for Athlone Ireland from 1865 to 1868. Ireland was an area of particular concern to Gladstone. He successfully passed an Act to disestablish the Church of Ireland and an Irish Land Act to deal with unfair landlords. In his third term as Prime Minister in 1886 he introduced an Irish Home Rule Bill proposing a parliament for Ireland which was defeated.<p>This correspondence was initiated when Gladstone claimed that Rearden was not a supporter of the Liberal party because he had opposed some of Gladstone's reforms. Rearden indignantly refutes this claim and maintains "I supported all that was endurable in your Irish Reform Bill". He goes on to write see page 9:"Giving you all due credit for the one important object which you have secured towards strengthening the connection between Great Britain and Ireland I must explicitly declare that Ireland will not and ought not to be satisfied until another and indispensable measure of justice shall be accomplished--until as provided for in a Bill which it is my intention to introduce there shall be separate and distinct legislation upon matters purely Irish."<p>A New York Times article published July 2 1868 with the dateline London June 20 1868 refers to the Gladstone/Rearden correspondence attacking Gladstone for "always being drawn into some unseemly squabble" and characterizing Rearden as "a common noisy man" and as the last joint in the tail of the Liberal party the joint "apt to get most frequently in the dirt."<p>The Times also refers to Rearden's suggestion that the Queen should abdicate which is the subject of the appendix. This consists of a letter from Rearden to the Morning Post newspaper which has accused him of disloyalty to the Queen. Apparently Rearden felt that Queen Victoria should abdicate in favor of the Prince of Wales owing to her frequent retreats from London thus cutting short the London "season" and casting a gloom upon society.<p>Rare.
