‎US Army Infantry School‎

‎The Fire Squad; TC 7-1‎

‎Fort Benning GA: US Army Infantry School 1974. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Very good. The format is approximately 7 inches by 5 inches. 18 2 pages plus covers. Illustrations. In military terminology a squad is among the smallest of military organizations and is led by a non-commissioned officer. NATO and U.S. doctrine define a squad as an organization "larger than a team but smaller than a section." while U.S. Army doctrine further defines a squad as a "small military unit typically containing two or more fire teams." In American usage a squad consists of eight to fourteen soldiers and may be further subdivided into fireteams. This training circular reflects the state-of-the-art the state-of-the-knowledge and the state-of-the-practice after the end of major combat operations during the Vietnam War. This training circular was prepared by the US Army Infantry School Fort Benning Georgia to introduce new doctrine on dismounted tactical movement of rifle squads when not in contact with the enemy. Infantry combat has two chief requirements--to more and to fight. A squad spends far more time moving than fighting. On this basis alone it is important to use the best possible techniques for moving. Howerver movement techniques become even more important when it is recognized that a moving unit normally makes contact with the enemy at a time and place of the enemy's choosing. In short the situation at the moment of contact is designed by the enemy to be to his advantage. to reduce this enemy advantage the squad leader must us the least number of men to find the enemy and when enemy contact is expected he must always have one fire team in a carefully selected position ready to fire to cover the movement of the other team. In following these rules a simple system of squad movement must be used which employs each fire time in a standard formation. The distance between fire team formations--and the ability of each one to support the other by fire--vary with the terrain and tactical situation. US Army Infantry School paperback‎

‎US. Army Quartermaster School U. S.‎

‎History and Traditions of The Quartermaster Corps; NIPUB 114 ATSM-FTM-OE‎

‎Fort Lee Virginia: U.S. Army Quartermaster School Supply Training Center of the Army School System 1981. Presumed first printing thus. Staplebound. Good. The format is approximately 8.25 inches by 10.75 inches. 20 pages. Illustrations. Tabular Data. References. Food Service. Information on Major General Thomas Mifflin inside the front cover. Quartermaster Corps Insignia inside the rear cover. Cover has some wear soiling and name of previous owner Janice Burton on front cover. This may be the same Burton who served as a spokeswoman for the Army’s John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center. Ink notation on the back cover. This NIPUB supersedes the NIPUB dated September 1979. On June 16 1775 just two days after sanctioning the formation of an Army the Continental Congress authorized the position of Quartermaster General. It also authorized a Commissary General. As the new Soldiers were gathering outside of Boston they required food shelter clothing and all of the necessities for sustaining an Army in the field. Two months later George Washington appointed Thomas Mifflin to be the first Quartermaster General. Congress and the nation were poorly prepared for the task of supporting the Continental Army. Without a viable national government the Army depended upon contributions from the states which were uneven at best. Even when food and supplies were available the Quartermasters often lacked the means to transport the goods to the troops. The miserable winter at Valley Forge is perhaps the best remembered example of hardships suffered by the Revolutionary War Soldiers. Nevertheless Thomas Mifflin and later Nathanael Greene created some semblance of order within the supply system. The United States Army Quartermaster Corps formerly the Quartermaster Department is a sustainment and former combat service support CSS branch of the United States Army. It is also one of three U.S. Army logistics branches the others being the Transportation Corps and the Ordnance Corps. The U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps mission is to support the development production acquisition and sustainment of general supply Mortuary Affairs subsistence petroleum and water and material and distribution management during peace and war to provide combat power to the U.S. Army. The officer in charge of the branch for doctrine training and professional development purposes is the Quartermaster General. The Quartermaster Corps is the U.S. Army's oldest logistics branch established 16 June 1775. On that date the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution providing for "one Quartermaster General of the grand army and a deputy under him for the separate army". In 1802 under President Thomas Jefferson the size of the US Army was reduced with the Quartermaster Department being disbanded. In its place the nation was divided into three departments each with its own agent and subordinates who were responsible for quartermaster functions within each Department The Quartermaster Corps was re-established in 1812. From 1775 to 1912 this organization was known as the Quartermaster Department. In 1912 Congress consolidated the former Subsistence Pay and Quartermaster Departments to create the Quartermaster Corps. Quartermaster units and soldiers have served in every U.S. military operation from the Revolutionary War to recent operations in Iraq Operation Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan Operation Enduring Freedom. The Regimental Insignia was authorized in 1986 and revised in 1994 to the current insignia. The insignia is described as a gold color metal and enamel device 1 inch in height consisting of a gold eagle with wings spread and head lowered looking to his right and standing upon a wheel with a blue felloe set with thirteen gold stars having thirteen gold spokes and the hub white with a red center; superimposed on the wheel a gold sword and key crossed diagonally hilt and bow up all on a black background and resting upon a wreath of green laurel terminating at either side below the eagle's wings at the upper end of the sword and key. Attached below the device is a gold scroll inscribed SUPPORTING VICTORY in black. The original regimental insignia was all gold and approved on 31 March 1986. The design was changed on 7 June 1994 to add color to the insignia. The Regimental DUI is worn on the Soldier's right side above the name tag and any unit awards on the Army Service Uniform. The Branch Insignia was approved in its present form in 1913. The sword is characteristic of military forces and symbolized the Quartermaster Corps control of military supplies. The key is representative of the Corps traditional storekeeping function. The wheel is styled after a six-mule-wagon wheel and represents transportation and delivery of supplies. The wheel has thirteen spokes a red and white hub and a blue felloe the outer edge of the wheel embedded with thirteen gilt gold stars. The thirteen stars and spokes of the wheel represent the original colonies and the origin of the Corps which occurred during the Revolutionary War. The gilt gold eagle is the national bird and is symbolic of our nation. The colors red white and blue are the national colors. The Branch Insignia is worn on the lapel of the Army Service Uniform singly on a brass disk for Enlisted personnel and in pairs for Officers. ‎United States Army, The Ordnance School‎

‎The Ordnance Company Medium Maintenance The Ordnance Battalion Maintenance; Ordnance School Text OS 9-25‎

‎Aberdeen Proving Ground MD: The Ordnance School 1941. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Four-hole punched and held together with two two pronged clips. Good. Format is approximately 8 inches by 13 inches four-hole punched with two two pronged clips holding the text together. 3iii-vii 250 pages. Three pages of errata sheets. 18 appendices. 50 Figures. Printed single-sided only. Cover worn torn and soiled with some page wear and soiling noted. Pencil marks and notations on cover and some pages. The major portion of this text appears to be an early version of Field Manual No. 9-10 The Ordnance Company -Medium Maintenance; The Ordnance Battalion--Maintenance. It was apparently expected to be issued in July 1941 the the date of issue is blank. FM 9-10 Ordnance Field Manual Ordnance Field Maintenance was published on April 20 1942. There are substantial differences between this text and what was officially published as FM 9-10. This publication was intended solely for use as an Ordnance School text for instruction purposes only. It was not intended for general distribution to agencies or personnel outside the Ordnance training Center at Aberdeen Proving ground Md. It is reasonable to conclude that this instructional text was also a draft text for what would eventually become FM 9-10 and that the experience gained in its use at The Ordnance School contributed to the development of material changes. As such then this early version not labeled as a draft provides a significant and perhaps unique insight into the development of Ordnance doctrine training and practice at the Company and Battalion level at the time when the United States entered the Second World War. One page on Machine Gun Repairs to the M9197A1 laid in. The purpose of this manual was to present a coordinated and complete picture of the problem of ordnance field maintenance together with a logical solution of that problem. While this manual will be found to be helpful as a reference for operation of the maintenance organizations in garrison it was intended primarily as a guide for use in field operations. There are included in the various parts of this manual a discussion of a typical ordnance field shop and a method of conducting operations; a discussion of details pertaining to a typical maintenance company; and discussions of particular problems in ordnance field maintenance as they are encountered and solved. Except where obviously necessary in the interests of uniformity throughout all ordnance service it is not intended that this manual shall impose unnecessary restrictions on the imagination and initiative of ordnance personnel responsible for the operation of the units covered by this manual. On the contrary it is intended that the thoughts and imagination of such personnel will be stimulated to evolve more satisfactory solutions to the problems of ordnance field service. The organization of ordnance maintenance in the field army is based on the principle of progressive increases in available maintenance facilities from front to rear. The equipment and personnel assigned to each echelon are designed to carry the normal load of that echelon plus a certain peak load of the subordinate echelons. In Part I. The Ordnance Company - Medium Maintenance there are Chapters on General; Organization and Equipment; Operations; Duties of Individuals; and Administrative Details. Part II. The Ordnance Battalion Maintenance has Chapters on General and Operations. A list of appendices follow and are in turn followed by the list of Figures. There are specific discussions of ordnance weapons and vehicles and materiel. There is significant discussion of the inspection of ordnance materiel especially ammunition. ‎Westlake School for Girls‎

‎Invitation to Commencement Exercises‎

‎Los Angeles: Westlake School for Girls c1931. Presumed First Edition First printing. Single sheet printed on one side with thin protective sheet with small tears and envelop. Good. Format is approximately 9.25 inches by 7 inches. This sheet has been folded in half resulting in four panels. Only the front panel has text. This has been provisionally dated as 1931 as that is the first year after the school moved to North Faring Road where June 10th fell on a Wednesday. Text reads: Miss de Laguna and Miss Vance request the honor of your presence at the Commencement Exercises of the Westlake School for Girls on Wednesday morning June tenth at eleven o'clock seven hundred North Faring Road. This invitation was addressed to Miss Louisa Sterry believed to be the daughter of Norman S. Sterry famed California lawyer. Frederica De Laguna Frederica b. around 1874 was an American educator. Born in Oakland California c. 1874; Stanford AB 1896 Columbia AM 1904. With Jessica Smith Vance founded Westlake School for Girls in Los Angeles 1904 and Westlake Junior College 1924 later known as Holmby College. Founded by Jessica Smith Vance and Frederica de Laguna as a small college preparatory school in 1904 it was initially located opposite of Westlake Park. In 1917 the school moved to Westmoreland Avenue in the Wilshire district and then to the location at 700 N. Faring Road.; Originally constructed in 1928 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style the dormitory and complete campus were designed by Arthur Kelly and his associate Joe Estep. The design included exterior stucco walls tiled roofs and arches as decorative motifs towers corbel tables and wrought-iron balconies. The demolition of much of the campus followed the 1971 Sylmar earthquake. The Westlake School for Girls was established in 1904 by Jessica Smith Vance and Frederica de Laguna in what is now downtown Los Angeles California as an exclusively female institution offering both elementary and secondary education. It was so-named because it was near Westlake Park now known as MacArthur Park. At the time the school was a for-profit alternative to the already-established Marlborough School which had been established as a non-profit before the turn of the century. It moved to its present-day campus located on North Faring Road in Holmby Hills California in 1927. The school was purchased by Sydney Temple whose daughter Helen Temple Dickinson was headmistress until 1966 when Westlake became a non-profit institution. Shirley Temple the child star attended the school as did many who became notables in acting athletics and other endeavors Astronaut Sally Ride was an alumnae. The Temple family owned the school until 1977 with Dickinson serving in an ex officio capacity. In 1968 Westlake became exclusively a secondary school. The Harvard School for Boys was established in 1900 by Grenville C. Emery as a military academy on the site of a barley field located at the corner of Western Avenue and Sixteenth Street now Venice Boulevard in Los Angeles California. Emery was originally from Boston and around 1900 he wrote to Harvard University to ask permission to use the Harvard name for his new secondary school and received permission from the university's then-President Charles W. Eliot. As both schools continued to grow in size towards the late 1980s and as gender exclusivity became less of a factor both in the schools' reputations and desirability the trustees of both Harvard and Westlake effectuated a merger in 1989. The two institutions had long been de facto sister schools and interacted socially. Complete integration and coeducation began in 1991. Westlake School for Girls unknown‎

Stapled at center of top edge. Various paginations approximately 330 pages. Illustrations. Name and phone number written inside the front cover. This is a small manual designed to be carried in the pocket of a Ranger candidate during training. It contains a wealth of information on demolitions boobytraps first aid rappelling combat intelligence survival weapons counter-guerilla tactics and over 32 important subjects. Includes a Glossary and well as chapters on Leadership Combat Orders Coordination Checklists Departure and Reentry of Forward Units Actions at the Objective Patrol Bases Linkup Operations Communications First Support Army Aviation Movement Reconnaissance Demolitions and Mines Stream Crossing and Waterborne Operations Military Mountaineering Evasion/Survival Combat Intelligence First Aid and References. The last page is The Ranger's Creed. Rangers were organized in 1756 by Major Robert Rogers a native of New Hampshire who recruited nine companies of American colonists to fight for the British during the French and Indian War. Ranger techniques and methods were an inherent characteristic of the frontiersmen in the colonies but Major Rogers was the first to capitalize on them and incorporate them into a permanently organized fighting force. His "Standing Orders" were written in the year 1759. Even though they are over 200 years old they apply just as well to Ranger operations conducted on today's battlefield as they did to the operations conducted by Rogers and his men. The 75th Ranger Regiment is a lethal agile and flexible force capable of conducting many complex joint special operations missions. Today's Ranger regiment is the Army's premier direct-action raid force. Each of the four geographically dispersed Ranger battalions is always combat ready mentally and physically tough and prepared to fight our country's adversaries. Their capabilities include conducting airborne and air assault operations seizing key terrain such as airfields destroying strategic facilities and capturing or killing enemies of the nation. Rangers are capable of conducting squad through regimental-size operations and are resourced to maintain exceptional proficiency experience and readiness. The regiment remains an all-volunteer force with an intensive screening and selection process followed by combat-focused training. The 75th Ranger Regiment is a proud unit and a team of teams - serving the nation. Ranger School is one of the toughest training courses for which a Soldier can volunteer. Army Rangers are experts in leading Soldiers on difficult missions - and to do this they need rigorous training. For more than two months Ranger students train to exhaustion pushing the limits of their minds and bodies. The purpose of the Army's Ranger course is to prepare these Army volunteers - both officers and enlisted Soldiers - in combat arms related functional skills. The Rangers' primary mission is to engage in close combat and direct-fire battles. The Ranger Course was conceived during the Korean War and was known as the Ranger Training Command. The Ranger Training Command was inactivated and became the Ranger Department a branch of the Infantry School at Fort Benning Ga. Oct. 10 1951. Its purpose was and still is to develop combat skills of selected officers and enlisted men. This requires them to perform effectively as small-unit leaders in a realistic tactical environment and under mental and physical stress; approaches that are found in actual combat. Emphasis is placed on the development of individual combat skills and abilities through the application of the principles of leadership while further developing military skills in the planning and conduct of dismounted infantry airborne airmobile amphibious independent squad and platoon-size operations. Graduates return to their units to pass on these skills. United States Army Infantry School, Ranger Training Brigade unknown‎

‎J. O. Watson Class of the Fairmont High School, West Virginia‎

‎Marion County in the Making‎

‎Marion County West Virginia: Fairmont High School sponsored by James Otis Watson 1917. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Good. 362 4 pages. Cover has some wear and soiling. This was prepared under the supervision and direction of Dora Lee Newman Head of the Department of History in the High School. Includes Illustrations Class Roll Foreword The Source of Our Inspiration Legend of the Monongahela. Also includes chapters on The Land Beyond the Mountains; The Native Races; Trails and Transportation; Establishing a New Frontier; Means of Defense; The Struggle for the Mastery; Homes and Homelife; Before the Rule of Fashion; Manners and Customs; Remedies and Superstitions; Songs and Legends; Locating Mills; The Beginning of Other Industries; Organization and Government; The Early Churches; Schools and First Newspapers and the Coming of the Railroad. The writing of the history of pioneer Marion County has been of great interest and profit to the Class and has awakened a most wholesome interest throughout the county. It has kindled a friendly family feeling tracing back our ancestors to neighbors who lived side by side through perils and privations. It has impressed upon our minds the rugged sterling valor and virtues that secured for us the comforts and refinements of which they never even dreamed. James Otis Watson was the real pioneer in West Virginia coal development. After the first railroad was constructed through Fairmont in 1852 he immediately opened up the first coal mine called the American Coal Company. In 1852 Mr. Watson built a suspension bridge over the waters of the Monongahela River connecting Fairmont and Palatine. Marion County proper was created by an act of the Virginia Assembly on January 14 1842 from parts of Monongalia and Harrison Counties and was named after General Francis Marion of American Revolutionary War fame known to history as "The Swamp Fox". The year 1852 was an eventful time in Marion County's history starting with the great flood on Monday April 5. Heavy rains the day before caused the Monongahela and West Fork Rivers to rise at rate of 5 feet per hour until Tuesday afternoon when the water reached 43 feet above its normal level. The greatest damage was sustained on the West Fork where over 40 houses and buildings were swept away and floated past Fairmont. The flood also damaged the railroad which was in the final stages of being completed. By June 23 the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was completed connecting Fairmont to the west and to large cities in the east like Baltimore. The railroad required the building of a bridge to cross the Monongahela River about 1 mile west of Fairmont. This was achieved by building a massive iron bridge spanning 650 feet and lifted 35 feet above the water. The third major event of the year 1852 was the completion of the Fairmont and Palatine suspension bridge connecting Fairmont to what was then the town of Palatine. The bridge was built under the direction of James L. Randolph assistant engineer of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad; at a cost of about thirty thousand dollars. Marion was one of fifty Virginia counties that were admitted to the Union as the state of West Virginia on June 20 1863 at the height of the Civil War. In the months that followed West Virginia's counties were divided into civil townships with the intention of encouraging local government. This proved impractical in the heavily rural state and in 1872 the townships were converted into magisterial districts. Marion County was divided into seven districts: Fairmont Grant Lincoln Mannington Paw Paw Union and Winfield. Fairmont High School (sponsored by James Otis Watson) hardcover‎
