Whipple's Home School Journal Vol. I No. 12 December 1875
Mystic River Groton Ct 1875. Modest-sized newspaper 33cm. Four pages. Later horizontal fold. This school was established in 1869 by Jonathan Whipple and claimed to have good success utilizing their method of "oralism" which utilized "Whipple's Natural Alphabet as part of a system of "articulation and lip-reading" while rejecting the use of sign language. We don't know how many issues of this promotional newspaper were published. OCLC lists one holding -- Galludet University which has 3 issues: Vol. 1 Nos. 6 & 7 March & April 1874 and Vol. 2 No. 1 April 1876. The residential school was reorganized in 1896 as Mystic Oral School for the Deaf with heavy reliance on state aid; operation of the school was taken over by the State of Connecticut in 1921. Consist of 23 original Gelatin silver print black and white photos. 3 x 4 ¼ inches. c. 1940s-1950. Images show students at work in blood banks in labs studying and relaxing between classes. Includes photos of school buildings such a the Medical School entrance in addition to several instructors. Some include handwritten captions giving a little more information such as a picture of the "Class of 1950" with 8 women and 1 man identified: "Bev Helen Belle Monkey Noni Ann Betty Joann Bill". Other captions include names of doctors instructors fellow students and the type of work being done in images such as "Bev - vaccine" and "Beth Bueliner - Blood Bank". Other photos identify the subject as the Media Lab Chemistry Lab working with EKG and studying Hematology blood. Students outside of medical school entrance. Photos of a quick break grabbing a coffee and snack of animal crackers.<br/><br/>Although women had participated in the informal practice of medicine for hundreds of years there were relatively few women studying medicine in the United States at this time. By 1900 only about a dozen medical schools had opened to coeducation and female graduates often found themselves unable to access training hospitals and professional associations. The trailblazing young women in these photos whom we see performing experiments and examining patients bucked the trend of their generation to become doctors. Early images of women in medicine are very rare and a fine addition to a collection. Very good condition. unknown books

Report Card Girls School Notebook with quarterly reports on student's academic progress at an all girls' school in London. "Wimbledon Education Committee. Wimbledon Central School for Girls." printed on front cover of notebook. 9 x 7 in. Original paper wrappers. 27 handwritten pages followed by 45 blank. Homemade brown paper jacket with original owner's name and school administrative information in the top right corner; and "Monthly Journal" written in the center. Entries from 1935-1939. Marks student Beryl Kathleen Rose's academic progress from 11 to 15 years old. Includes grades and notes from teachers in Literature Composition Grammar French History Geography Arithmetic Science Art Needlework and Handwriting. In later years her studies expand to include Book-keeping Algebra Geometry Physical Training and Shorthand. Teacher comments generally remark on her friendly nature but chide her to focus more on her studies. She is consistently listed in the bottom of her class "position in form" is listed with each entry. "Beryl could do much better if she exerted herself more. She must learn to be self-reliant." "Beryl's work shows improvement on the whole. Her behavior is usually good." "Beryl can do good work but she wastes too much time in idle talk." Early Albany Law School Photographic Yearbook. A photographic yearbook from the Albany Law School class of 1860 assembled by student Horatio Colony 1835-1917.<br/>Opened in 1851 Albany Law School is the oldest independent law school in the United States. Many of its students in the 1850s and '60s became prominent lawyers and judges.<br/>As is the custom with the professionally produced college photograph yearbooks produced by George Kendall Warren starting in the late 1850s each photograph is inscribed beneath by the sitter with his name and hometown. The album opens with professors Ira Harris Amasa Parker Amos Dean Nathaniel Harris and Levi Chamberlain. Some notable students include Alexander P. Ketchum who became a Colonel and Chief Appraiser of the Port of New York; Clayton H. Delano 1836-1920 who served eight terms as the Town of Ticonderoga's Supervisor and was elected twice to the New York State Assembly; and William S. Opdyke general counsel of the Delaware and Hudson Company. <br/>Horatio Colony 1835-1917 whose picture appears last and is unfortunately obscured by damage assembled this album. The photograph of Levi Chamberlain is inscribed to "Horatio friend and pupil." He was admitted to the bar in New Hampshire and New York in 1860; in 1869 he along with his brother George took over the management of the family business the Faulkner and Colony Woolen Mill. He held several other civic and local government positions before his death in an automobile accident in 1917. His son Horatio Jr. 1900-1977 a poet and novelist established the Colony family home as a museum upon his death.<br/><br/>With: Autograph album containing autographs of acquaintances and some notable figures including Amos Bronson Alcott "A. Bronson Alcott" and Octavius Frothingham "O.B. Frothingham". In near matching black morocco autograph album stamped in blind and gilt extremities rubbed. With later inscription of C.W. Letter written by Sarah Porter founder of Miss Porter's School for Girls to a friend and possibly former student regretfully declining an invitation to her wedding. Miss Porter studied privately with Yale Professors. and her brother Noah later became President of Yale. She was an opponent of women's suffrage. <br/>She notes in this letter that affairs at the school will keep her far too busy to make the journey. Sarah Porter 1813-1900 founded her school in Farmington in 1843 setting it up as an institution at which girls could receive a well-rounded academic education. She writes in part:<br/> <br/>"My dear Mary I thank you heartily that you have desired me as one of your wedding guests and I should be very happy in being with you at this so happy moment of your life. I could not easily under any circumstances easily leave school for so long a time as a journey to Newton would require - but now Mr. Brandt's wretched health renders him unable to teach and his classes fall daily into my care so that my place is daily here. Your own and your brother's wedding at once will not only doubly crown the day but give promise to multiplied successive anniversaries. unknown books

Oblong 8vo 67 leaves with pro-forma engraved forms on rectos without accomplishment; quarter old sheep hinges split and boards worn and nearly loose old non-original label mostly perished on front board final four leaves reappropriated as a scrapbook for local recipes the rest of the certificates generally fine. Inscribed on the front pastedown: "In Chancery 8th Circuit. In the matter of the Dissolution of the Buffalo Literary and Scientific Academy. Produced and proven before me as "Stock scrip book" "F" on hearing June 24 1846" The Buffalo High School Association later the Buffalo Literary and Scientific Academy was established in 1827 with ambitious plans for providing a "scientifick literary and military academy." It offered courses in "topography construction of maps navigation fencing ethicks natural theology evidences of Christianity and metaphysicks." Rates for attendance were high and the level of matriculation could not sustain the school. In 1863 Oliver G. Steele wrote "It was the great pet of the city. It was however too expensive for the time failing to reach the great body of our people; and changes of teachers and policy soon brought its career to a close." An act to dissolve the corporation and to provide for the just disposition of the property was passed in 1846.
