Volume I contains 66 plates including a frontis portrait of the artist plus a map with his route outlined in red and an engraved title. Volume II contains 52 plates plus an engraved title - a total of 118 plates by Bartlett plus portrait map and engraved titles complete. Full black morocco lettered and extensively decorated in gilt slightly raised spine bands all edges gilt gilt tooled inner dentelles. Extremeties rubbed a bit of light chipping to the spine ends of volume II contents sound with foxing that ranges from very light to rather heavy with the heaviest at the beginning and end of each volume. Small dampstain at upper edge of volume I affects the margins of three plates in volume I dampstain in volume II affects the engraved title and title page of volume II. A handsome set. First Edition. This issue circa 1812. 2 volumes bound in one 72 handcolored engraved plates each with facing page of text 10 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches 26x17.5cm decorative embossed cloth-covered boards. Plates on wove paper generally very clean and bright occasional light foxing or spotting spot and pinhole to centre of plate 16 the Variegated Iris some foxing to text pages. Front joint broken white tape mend to interior hinge at Preface. This is an early 1800s reprint of the first two volumes of William Curtis' periodical "The Botanical Magazine." This publication proved so popular that plates from the earlier volumes were reissued to satisfy the demand of later subscribers who desired a complete set. Curtis featured some of the most decorative and popular imported plants in these early volumes making these volumes an absolute treat for the eye. Plants include Moss Rose several varieties of Iris Daffodil Gentian Eastern Poppy Cyclamen and from China: #64 Tawny Day-Lily; #25 China Pink #42 Rose Camellia. Olive drab pebbled cloth with blind-stamped eclectic floral trellis frame on both panels; gilded title with vignette on front panel; blind-stamped publisher's monogram framed in shield on rear panel; gilded title and vignette on spine. Yellow endpapers. BAL 7094 Cloth darkened with two camouflaged stains on front panel. Spine rolled; spine crown and foot frayed but complete; small shallow wormhole about �" from spine crown. All panel corners frayed. Textblock complete but pp. 131-34 on a single conjugate leaf torn out and reinserted; text unaffected. A lazy worm's few chomps restricted to a �" spot at textblock fore-edge. One gathering loosened from lower stitches but still sewn to block at top. Binding shaken overall with front hinge cracked after copyright page and preceding pages and board opening shakily but still secure; textblock cracked to lie flat at two favorite pieces. This digest of stories parodies poems and anecdotes-"one of the most popular collections of humor of the 19th century" sayeth the BAL-was compiled by Avery. "Sut Lovingood" stories by Harris are featured but Avery pulled from many sources for a total of nearly 50 pieces. Included among them is the first appearance in book form of Lewis Carroll with his piece "Novelty and Romancement A Broken Spell" which Avery included without acknowledgment or payment to Carroll. Occasional spotting. The beautifully illustrated first illustrated edition of Schiller's 'Fridolin or the Road to the Iron Forge' - a ballad which the German poet Schiller 1759-1805 composed for a poetry competition against Goethe in 1797 with the text volume of the parallel German-English edition published in London by Bohte ‘foreign bookseller to his majesty’. The engravings by Moritz Retzsch 1779-1857 German painter and draughtsman were much praised: accompanied by the illustrations the ballad 'assumes a new and more exalted character' provided by Retzsch's ability to give them 'an airy dimness that softens what is beautiful and deepens all that is terrific' Monthly Review 1825 p.522. SEVEN ILLUSTRATED LEAVES OFFERED AS A COLLECTION FROM "METAMORPHOSES.
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson 1717. 395 x 245 mm. 15 5/8 x 9 5/8". Seven individual engravings. LARGE RICHLY DETAILED ENGRAVED PLATES each with a small crest and dedication at foot to a notable contemporary woman; Mrs. Walpole Viscountess Towshend and the Honourable Mrs. Margaret Pelham among the dedicatees. Slight browning and fraying at edges otherwise very well preserved the impressions deep and fresh. The engravings on these charming leaves illustrating various books of Ovid's "Metamorphoses" are extremely animated and full of interest. The artist is not content with just one theme: each illustration contains subjects from several different legends. Among the scenes pictured are: 1 people becoming trees and Phaeton falling from his chariot in the sky; 2 Perseus flourishing the head of Medusa while Minerva chats with the Nine Muses and in the background the ship of Odysseus sails past the Sirens; 3 Apollo and Artemis slaying the children of the arrogant Niobe with a vignette off to one side showing Minerva turning the weaver Arachne into a spider; 4 the labors of Hercules 5 Maenads clubbing Orpheus 6 a scene of sacrifice with centaurs battling in the background and 7 a medley of scenes from Homer's "Iliad" including Thetis appealing to Zeus in the sky Hephaestus forging the armor of Achilles and the funeral pyre of Patroclus. New York: Charles Scribner & Co. Grand Street. Very Good-. 1868. Leather. Wood cuts and engravings; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 440 pages; Circa 1863-1870 no date given. Charles Scribner & Co. At Grand Street. Predates the formation of Scribner & Armstrong in 1871. The content of Harvey's pictorial designs engraved by the Dalziels and including the Cheeber biographical treatment is found in several mid to late 19th century imprints including Bohn's. Printing for this work was by Woodfall & Kinder London. Pagination and design are as in the Bohn edition of the early 1860's. Presumably Scribner had sheets sent over to have published under his imprint though there are few references to a Scribner edition with this content. Soundly bound in period grain patterned leather with decorative borders in blind to sides and titles in gilt to spine' marbled paper endpages and all sides gilt. Some scuffing and rubbing to leather at edges with a small area of spill stain to the lower board. Title page had cracked loose in the gutter but reattached to the stub by prior owner. Some furring and chipping to title page at front edge and a few similar such instance to the next 2 pages. Illustrated throughout from woodcut by Dalziels after Harvey. Sound and clean.
