Livingstone's Africa: Perilous Adventures and Extensive Discoveries in the Interior of Africa

Hinges cracked. Wear to extremities. Slight scuffing around edges. Previous owner signature on inside of front board and fep. Otherwise clean unmarked pages. Slight tanning.

Livingstone was one of the first Westerners to make a transcontinental journey across Africa Luanda on the Atlantic to Quelimane on the Indian Ocean near the mouth of the Zambezi in 1854-1856. Despite repeated European attempts especially by the Portuguese central and southern Africa had not been crossed by Europeans at that latitude owing to their susceptibility to malaria dysentery and sleeping sickness which was prevalent in the interior and which also prevented use of draft animals oxen and horses as well as to the opposition of powerful chiefs and tribes such as the Lozi and the Lunda of Mwata Kazembe. In 1874 the New York Herald in partnership with Britain's Daily Telegraph financed Stanley on an expedition to the African continent. One of his missions was to solve a last great mystery of African exploration by tracing the course of the Congo River to the sea. The difficulty of this expedition is hard to overstate. Stanley used sectional boats to pass the great cataracts separating the Congo into distinct tracts. After 999 days on 9 August 1877 Stanley reached a Portuguese outpost at the mouth of the Congo River. Starting with 356 people only 114 had survived of whom Stanley was the only European.

Included is a detailed account of the discoveries of both renown explorers. An exceptional book in very good condition. Phila. & Boston, Hubbard bros.; [etc., etc.] hardcover

Between 1909 and 1941 he wrote thirty-six novels five volumes of short stories two original plays and three volumes of memoirs. His range included disturbing studies of the macabre children's stories and historical fiction most notably his Herries Chronicle series set in the Lake District. He worked in Hollywood writing scenarios for two Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films in the 1930s and played a cameo in the 1935 version of David Copperfield. As a gay man at a time when homosexual practices were illegal for men in Britain Walpole conducted a succession of intense but discreet relationships with other men and was for much of his life in search of what he saw as "the perfect friend". He eventually found one a married policeman with whom he settled in the English Lake District. Having as a young man eagerly sought the support of established authors he was in his later years a generous sponsor of many younger writers. He was a patron of the visual arts and bequeathed a substantial legacy of paintings to the Tate Gallery and other British institutions. wikipedia. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.

M. J. Bishop James writer of verses; engravings by various eminent artists
The Painted Picture Play-Book. Illustrated with upwards of Three Hundred Coloured Pictures and an Explanatory Verse to Each.
London: Dean and Son. First edition presumed. Paper on boards. Fair. N.d. circa 1850s. Folio 13.5 by 10 inches. Not paginated 33 leaves including title page with printing on only one side per leaf. Wonderful hand-colored illustrations by unnamed artists but many with the qualiy of Tenniel. Some form part of a loose story narrative and others are part of a looser verse bond. Particularly appealing are the feline illustrations which come in several places most notably part of "The Cat Party". The leaves do not appear to have been bound in a proper order as this particular narrative moves in reverse. It is all somewhat chaotic yet charmingly so. Also a stand-out is the imagery of the "London Toy Warehouse". While some of the animal imagery is straightforward and pedestrian this is more than dominated by that which is humorous unexpected and inspired. The book was surely intended both to instruct and amuse and it is this twin objective that underlies its dual tone. The boards which are covered by illustrated paper pasted on are soiled and chewed up in the corners and the edges are rough. There are a fair number of closed tears inside near the front that were less than deftly repaired with tape some of which remains. Some soilage throughout. Still most of the imagery remains bright and appealing.

Dean and Son hardcover

HYDE Laurence Wood Engravings. Introduction by Rockwell Kent.
SOUTHERN CROSS. Told in Wood Engravings. With a Review of Stories in Pictures from Earliest Times.
Los Angeles: Ward Ritchie. Good with no dust jacket. 1951. First Edition. Hardcover. 255 pages hundreds of woodcuts gift inscription from the author on the half title. Square duodecimo. Condition of this 1st edition is good antiquarian. The black cloth covers are a little worn some corner rubbing spine a bit faded with some pulling at the top interior clean and unmarked. This unusual book is a very early example of a graphic novel told entirely in engraved woodcut illustrations without text except for an introduction and a postscript A review of Block Books and Stories in Woodcuts. It shows/tells the fictionalized story of Bikini Island in the South Seas and the devastation that came to its inhabitants at the end of WWII with the advent of the nuclear age. The woodcuts are striking and graphic sharp and clear in a recognizably mid-century style quite reminiscent of Rockwell Kent who lends his name and introduction to the book. A beautiful book with a haunting too human and tragic story with a gift inscription from the author on the half-title! . ; Wood engraving; 12mo 7" - 7" tall; Signed by Author . Augustano - Nurnberg: Melchior Kusel - Johann Leonhard Buggel 1679. First edition 1679-80. In German. Imperfect copy with an interesting provenance. Book of beautifully produced engravings of scenes from the Old and New Testaments previously owned by George W. Van Horne 1833-1895 appointed by Abraham Lincoln as US Consul at Marsailles. Includes an 1870 letter signed by Van Horne discussing how he purchased the book from a certain bookseller "of the highest reputation for integrity" and that it was one of only thirty copies printed which we now strongly suspect to be untrue. Full contemporary leather with red spine label raised spine bands with compartments decorated with a pomegranate motif a total of 238 plates printed on one side only six page of text title page dedication engraved pages dividing the sections colophon. Covers rubbed at the edges with partial surface crack to the front joint covers well attached text block sound partially removed and unidentiable armorial bookplate on the front pastedown neatly written note in French appears to relate to a book catalogue dated 1827 on the front free endpaper pages clean with occasional light foxing chips to two edges long horizontal closed tear to one section title two plates bound out of order.
