‎The Review of Scientific Instruments Vol 24 Number 9 September 1953 The Cosmotron Issue‎

‎Lancaster PA and New York N.Y.: American Institute of Physics AIP 1953. First Edition. Wraps. Near Fine. First Edition. xxxii 723-898 xxxiii-xliv pages. Grey printed wrappers. Bumped at base of spine. The entire issue offered. Pages 725-870 contain articles about the Cosmotron starting with a review six articles on the magnet 2 on windings five on radio-frequency systems two on injection system 2 on vacuum system four on the control system one on the building and some other articles besides. Nice state of the art description as of September 1953. Wraps. "The Cosmotron was a particle accelerator specifically a proton synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Its construction was approved by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1948 it reached its full energy in 1953 and it continued running until 1966 and was dismantled in 1969. It was the first particle accelerator to impart kinetic energy in the range of GeV to a single particle accelerating protons to 3.3 GeV. It was also the first accelerator to allow the extraction of the particle beam for experiments located physically outside the accelerator. It was used to observe a number of mesons previously seen only in cosmic rays and to make the first discoveries of heavy unstable particles called V particles at the time leading to the experimental confirmation of the theory of associated production of strange particles. It was the first accelerator that was able to produce all positive and negative mesons known to exist in cosmic rays. Its discoveries include the first vector meson.

The name chosen for the synchrotron was Cosmitron representing an ambition to produce cosmic rays but was changed to Cosmotron to sound like the cyclotron. The beam size of 64 × 15 cm and an energy goal of about 3 GeV determined the machine parameters. The synchrotron consisted of 288 magnets each weighing 6 tons and providing up to 1.5 T forming four curved sections. The range of field change was kept within limits by first accelerating particles to an intermediate energy in another accelerator and then injected into the Cosmotron. The straight sections without magnets were worrisome because there was no focusing and the betatron oscillations would change suddenly and might swing wildly. But all these major problems were overcome." wiki. American Institute of Physics [ AIP ] unknown books‎

‎Toscanini Arturo; Various Composers of Note‎

‎An Archive of Material and Correspondence from the Toscanini Estate Including a Draft of "To the People of America" with Notes in Toscanini's Hand‎

‎Various Places. Most 1940s-1950s various formats. Very Good. A wide-ranging collection of Toscanini material found amongst his scores in the estate of his grandson Walfredo. The highlight is a late draft of his speech "To The People of America" an important document in Italian-American history that was printed in Life Magazine during the Second World War.

Full descriptions as follows:

Typed Draft of Arturo Toscanini's "To The People of America" with Corrections in Toscanini's Hand.
New York September 3 1943.
A late typed draft of Arturo Toscanini's "To The People of America" which appeared ten days later in Life Magazine. Corrections in the hands of Walfredo and Arturo Toscanini. From the Toscanini estate. "On 13 September 1943 the editorial page of Life Magazine was occupied by an article entitled 'To the People of America' and signed by Arturo Toscanini; It was the only extensive declaration he ever wrote - and it was about politics not music. The article had originally been intended as a letter to President Roosevelt and the first drafts had been prepared for Arturo Toscanini by the Italian historians in exile Gaetano Salvemini and Giorgio La Plana who were both teaching at Harvard University at the time. They knew that their beliefs and Arturo Toscanini's coincided perfectly and they wanted the letter to appear over his signature because his fame was much greater than theirs. In their letter to President Roosevelt the exiles stated their hopes and fears for Italy's immediate future and they tried - as the text illustrates - to influence allied policy toward their native country." Harvey Sachs The Letters of Arturo Toscanini page 389. Sachs wrote in his 1978 biography of Toscanini that Toscanini wrote the article on his own but then found evidence to the contrary. Regardless of its hidden origins this letter was a defining moment in Toscanini's career in the United States. This copy from September 3 would have been one of the final drafts. The text is nearly identical to the published version with a few small changes - "defying everything" is added in the fourth paragraph of the published version the "." marks are replaced by simple periods in a few instances and "just" has been replaced by "righteous" in the published version. Strangely the one error in AT's hand - moving the word "either" in the sixth paragraph - did not make it into the printed version. A remarkable piece of Toscanini ephemera. Four pages carbon paper with text on rectos only. Excellent condition overall with some normal tanning. A few stray corrections in pencil which an accompanying folder from the estate states are in Walfredo's hand.

A Collection of Nine Letters to Arturo Toscanini from his Colleagues.

These letters were found inside various scores and sheet music in the Toscanini estate. A wonderful collection quite effusive in nature most containing high praise for the maestro discussing the works of various composers and lamenting the passage of time. Contains the following items: 1 Typed Letter Signed from Harold Byrns to Arturo Toscanini. New York 1942. 2 Typed Letter from Associated Music Publishers to Arturo Toscanini. New York 1949. 3 Manuscript Letter from Max Reiter to Arturo Toscanini. San Antonio 1948. 4 Typed Letter from Domenico Savino to Arturo Toscanini. New York 1945. In Italian. 5 Manuscript Letter from Adolf Busch to Arturo Toscanini. S.p. s.d. 6 Manuscript Letter from Carlton Cooley to Arturo Toscanini. Stockton New Jersey 1956. 7 Autograph Letter from Robert Casadesus to Arturo Toscani. Princeton 1940. 8 Autograph Letter Signed from Pina Carmirelli to Arturo Toscanini. Rome 1951. In Italian. 9 Typed Letter from Foetisch Freres to Arturo Toscanini. Lausanne 1948. scanini. Lausanne 1948.

Four Original Photographs of Arturo Toscanini in Rehearsal March 1954 with Negatives.
New York 1954.

A collection of four 9 x 7 photographs of the great Toscanini in rehearsal with their original negatives. From the estate of Arturo Toscanini. The images show Toscanini casually dressed in a white short-sleeved shirt conducting his orchestra. All photos are stamped "File Copy / Do Not Remove" and have holes in upper left corners from thumbtacks and have inventory numbers written in ink. The inventory numbers - which all contain the prefix "33107" suggest that they could be for the rehearsals from his final performance on April 4.

Typed Letter from Arturo Toscanini to his Orchestra 1940.
N.p. July 22 1940. Typed letter text on recto only.
Arturo Toscanini wrote this letter to his orchestra upon the completion of a successful South American tour in 1940. He writes: "My dear friends sic Tomorrow our trip will be over. To-morrow we will be separated after two months we lived day by day the same life. It is very sad indeed but that is life. We have never been so linked all as one as in these 16 concerts. We must be proud of what we have done. God bless you all." The full text of the letter appears on page 374 of Harvey Sach's The Letters of Arturo Toscanini. Some indecipherable notes on margins in an unknown hand a few small various stains good condition overall.

Christmas Card to Arturo Toscanini from the Embassy of the USSR 1943.
Washington 1943. Card with stamped envelope 6 x 5 inches.
A Christmas card to Arturo Toscanini from Fedor Orekhov First Secretary and Press Representative of the USSR Embassy in Washington. Addressed to Toscanini at his Sycamore Street residence in Riverdale New York.
An interesting group all quite well preserved in excellent condition. unknown books‎

The Zeiss Historica Society was founded by Thomas Schreiner Charles Barringer Jr. and as noted in some of the society's journals Lawrence J. Gubas. Subcribed to by Zeiss enthusiasts all over the world the "objectives of the Society are the study of and exchange of information on the significant products and innovations of the Zeiss companies from their inception to the present." The Society was able to publish much interesting scholarly material on many aspects of Zeiss drawing on personal member collections as well as individual research. With the approval of the modern Zeiss firms Zeiss Historica also re-issued a few historic catalogs sent as premiums to members.

A worthwhile run of an important scholarly journal. ‎ARCHIVE OF FIREWORKS LABELS from India China Macau Japan and America‎

‎various: various 1970. Three Ring Binder. Good. We offer a large archive of fireworks labels dating to the 1970s including 175 labels collected from various manufacturers and countries mostly India and China but with a few from Japan and even America. The archive is contained in two binders labeled "FIREWORKS LABELS ALBUM NO. 3" containing 82 labels mostly of Indian origin and "FIREWORKS LABELS ALBUM NO 4." 99 labels mostly of Chinese/Macau origin with a few from Japan and America.

The archive was collected in the 1970s presumably by someone in the fireworks business and placed in old photograph albums with the "magnetic glue" format which has unfortunately transferred to the backs of many of the labels and in some cases is visible on the front of the labels. We've left the labels in the albums as is partly because there are some penciled notes on some pages indicating a date or in album 4 "PGII CONV" presumably for the Pyrotechnics Guide annual conventions. They are easily removable but we feel the choice of what storage to transfer them to was best left to the next owner.

Label artwork ranges from very ornate to very plain. Names are as varied as the marketers could make them - and the graphics vary from beautiful girls as often on the Indian labels to "American themes" reflecting the marketing target. The names are as creative as the images and evoke their use: "Mines" "Aerial Colored Flares" "Flower pots" "Flash Ray Gun" "Crackers" "Square Bombs" "V-2 Rocket "Neptune Rocket" "Cable Car" "Electric Sparklers" "Flaming Torches" etc. Three Ring Binder. These labels represent a wonderful piece of American Cultural History and conjure images of kids with family bright smiles and loud booms on the 4th of July a uniquely American phenomena. The fact that someone collected these is a boon. By definition after the BOOM the rest of the packaging isn't very useful to most. And some of the labels in Album #4 show the results of use with occasional charring. Checking various online auction sites we find labels selling from a few dollars for modern labels to many hundreds for earlier ones. A more detailed listing is available upon request to interested purchasers.

A highly visual collection this archive would provide a nice basis for a larger collection in the area. various unknown books‎

‎GALILEO GALILEI; Pontificiae Academiae Scientiarum Scripta Varia; Pio PASCHINI 1878 1962; Vasco RONCHI; Filippo SOCCORSI.‎

‎Miscellanea Galileiana. 3 volumes.‎

‎Vatican City:: Pontificia Academia Scientiarum 1964. 1964. Series; Pontificiae Academiae Scientiarum Scripta Varia 27. Three volumes. 8vo. xv 366; 367-721; 727-944 pp. Printed wrappers. Fine. SCARCE. In 1942 Paschini was commissioned by the president of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences father Agostino Gemelli to write a biography of Galileo Galilei. Paschini worked during the war years and sent the definitive manuscript to Cardinal Giovanni Mercati at the beginning of 1945. However the work met the resistance of the Holy Office and of the same Father Gemelli who left Paschini unanswered even after his letter of solicitation. He was then answered by the substitute Giovanni Battista Montini future Pope Paul VI to whom he had addressed. The latter made him read the reply of the Holy Office which attacked the work with the argument that the proofs put forward by Galileo in favor of heliocentrism were not sufficient and furthermore it was not considered appropriate to publish a work that appeared as an apology of the Pisan scientist. / After Paschini's death the definitive manuscript was extensively revised by the Belgian Jesuit Edmond Lamalle before being published in 1964. The episode is told by Paolo Simoncelli in the book "History of a censorship." "Life of Galileo"" and Vatican Council II " published in 1992. CONTENTS: v. 1-2. Vita e opere di Galileo Galilei / P. Paschini -- v. 3. Storia del Cannocchiale / V. Ronchi -- Il processo di Galileo / F. Soccorsi. Pontificia Academia Scientiarum, 1964. unknown books‎
