First edition; 12 x 9; pp. 6; off-white glossy stock illustrated with photographs and drawings; a few small nicks to edges and tips of spine; light age-toning and spotting to margins; overall in very good condition.By 1909 members of the Afifi Shrine Center in Tacoma living in Seattle had reached 487 and thus the Nile Shrine Center was chartered. That same year it would be "the first temple to carry the message of the Shrine to the land of the Midnight Sun" - undertaking a 5800-mile round-trip pilgrimage to Nome Alaska. Beginning in 1930 the Shrine held an ice carnival the 7th of which was advertised in the current program. A small collection of items dating from 1895 to 1906 related to San Francisco's first German-American Jewish mayor wealthy landowner businessman and founder of the Sutro Baths Adolph Heinrich Joseph Sutro 1830 â 1898.- "Official Program Sutro Baths Sunday Jan. 7 1906." Large brochure; 12 x 9; pp. 4; newsprint stock printed in black and illustrated with several drawings; fragile with several closed cuts and chips to edges and corners; good to very good condition. The program advertised the Sutro Baths - a sprawling entertainment complex for the masses featuring pools restaurants museums and more - and outlined the special events to be had that day at the Grand Aquatic Exhibition. It also featured ads for various San Francisco businesses.- "A Letter by One David Forster to His Honor Mayor Adolph Sutro. May 20 1895" Printed document signed in pencil; single sheet recto only; 8 1/2 x 5 1/4; minor wear to margins and corners; very good to near fine condition. The letter by "a qualified elector of this city" urges Sutro to appoint Mr. Samuel Foster as one of the new Board of Election Commissioners of the City and County of San Francisco."- "Two Blank Payment Slips Issued by Alexander Watson Agent for Adolph Sutro. A Collection of Material Presented to Parliament by Command of His Majesty on Bolshevism and Other Affairs in Russia 1919 - 1921
London: His Majesty Stationary Office 1919. Softcover. A small collection of three volumes of reports published as white papers between 1919 and 1921 they were filed by returning diplomatic representatives in Russia and by appointed British officials and released by the British Government to highlight the "disaster" caused by the Bolshevik rule. - "Russia. No. 1 1919. A Collection of Reports on Bolshevism in Russia." First edition; 13 x 8 1/4; pp. 1 iii-vi 1 2-88; printed off-white wraps; last leaf pp. 87-88 and back wrap perished replaced with a facsimile; front wrap with a bit of dust-dulling and a small handwritten number to upper corner detached; text block clean; good or better condition. After its publication the document was immediately withdrawn and reissued with various excisions and alterations because of its vicious anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and only a handful of copies the original first printing have survived. While some of the verbal attacks on Jews were more subtle others such as that of M. Oudendyk the Netherlands' Minister to Petrograd outright stated: ".I consider that the immediate suppression of Bolshevism is the greatest issue before the World not even excluding the war which is till raging and unless as above stated Bolshevism is nipped in the bud immediately it is bound to spread in one form or another over Europe and the whole World as it is organized and worked by Jews who have no nationality and whose one object is to destroy for their own ends the existing order of things." Also often discussed in the reports was the demise of the Romanov family. - "Miscellaneous. No. 13 1920. Interim Report of the Committee to Collect Information on Russia." First edition; 13 x 8 1/4; pp. 1 3-23; printed off-white wraps illustrated with a vignette separating from the text block; back wrap with cuts nicks and loss of paper along edges not affecting text; cut to bottom edge of front wrap; good to very good condition. The committee was appointed in 1920 and consisted of several prominent British figures including Sir William Ryland Dent Adkins and Alfred Emmott 1st Baron Emmott. Its purpose was "to inquire into conditions under which British subjects were recently imprisoned or detained in Russia and generally to obtain information in regard to the economic and political situation in that country." Some of the topics covered conduct of prison officials and "sidelights of prison life." - "Russia. No. 1 1921. Report Political and Economic of the Committee to Collect Information on Russia." First edition; 13 x 8 1/4; pp. 2 4-167; printed off-white wraps illustrated with a vignette; back wrap separated from the text block; front wrap with a bit of dust-dulling and small chips to corners; very good- condition. First edition; 9 x 6 1/2; pp. 7 8-203; rebound in 3/4 blue cloth and green paper over boards; rubbed spots along edges of boards and some scratches to paper; two stamps of the Academy of Architecture library to title page and a small blank envelope to back board verso; illustrated with numerous plates; very good- condition. Count Nikolai Petrovich Rumiantsev 1754 â 1826 was Minister of Commerce and Foreign Minister in the period leading up to Napoleon's invasion of Russia from 1808 until 1812. He was also a voracious collector amassing an enormous collection of coins maps and over 28 000 books manuscripts and historical documents. The last of his family he bequeathed them to the Ministry of Education after his death. Emperor Nicholas I issued a decree on the establishment of the Rumyantsev Museum in 1828 and it opened its doors in 1831 occupying the Rumyantsev House on English Quay in St. Petersburg. It became affiliated with the Imperial Public Library in 1845. The museum was relocated to Moscow in 1861 to the Pashkov House opposite the Kremlin becoming Moscow's first public museum. It was renamed the Imperial Moscow and Rumiantsev Museum in 1913 while new acquisitions were continuously added to the existing inventory. In 1924 the Soviet Government decided to shut the museum down splitting the collections and transferring them to the Lenin State Library of the USSR the Tretyakov Gallery the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and others. The current volume covered a turbulent period the beginning of the First World War which had put a great strain on the staff and operations of the museum hitting especially hard the library where most employees had been drafted. It included a breakdown of the number of visitors and researchers from various nationalities financial reports and obituaries of members of the museum. It also prominently featured detailed bibliographical descriptions of new acquisitions in the various departments including books manuscripts personal documents objects of art etc. Apparently two other small pamphlets with a catalog of the Elzevir editions in the library and the letters of Turgenev to Countess Lambert were published simultaneously with the current one not present. A what appears to be the only issue from an intended series the booklet was published by the Organization of Ukrainian Emigre Women in Germany. The organization was initially founded at a DP displaced persons camp in Munich but would later spread through other camps in the American and British occupational zones after the end of the Second World War. Their goal was to provide educational and medical help to boost nationalism and morale to help organize classes and workshops and to act as liaisons to their compatriots with the Americans and Brits. The book highlighting the lives of prominent Ukrainian women was devoted to Olena Pchilka 1849 â 1930 pseudonym for Olha Petrivna Kosach - publisher author ethnographer and civil activist and the Staritski-Cherniakhivski sisters - Mariia Oksana and Liudmyla - famed authors and actresses. A Small Collection of Children's books Published by Ivan Sytin
Moskva Moscow: Tipografiia T-va I. D. Sytina 1917. Softcover. Three books 1917 - 1918; presumed first editions; 8 x 6; pp. 20 19 and 20 respectively; chromolithographed wraps; all three with small rubbed spots to spine and corners; staples replaced; one with small loss of paper to lower margin of title leaf; illustrated with full chromolithographed plates; overall in very good condition. Ivan Sytin 1851 â 1934 was a prominent publisher owner of the biggest publishing empire in pre-Revolutionary Russia. Growing up poor and semi-literate with only two years of formal education at the age of 15 he apprenticed for a Moscow publisher who would eventually help him open his own business in 1876. He was catapulted from obscurity to fame in 1882 where he received a medal for his exhibits at the All-Russian Industrial and Artistic Exhibition and even more so in 1884 when Tolstoy chose him to work on his books. He would also publish a newspaper and would found Sytin's Art School many of which's students would go on to work for him after graduation. He would become famous for his children's books illustrated with Russian folk motifs in the style of Ivan Bilibin. The three current publications were issued right around and shortly after the Revolution when his printing house was nationalized and although the Bolsheviks allowed him to continue publishing his books were strictly censored and made to conform to the Government's requirements. - Ivashko.
