8vo. 80 pp. Original printed wrappers with English title on the lower cover. An academic lecture delivered in 1950 by Havard history professor George Sarton (1884-1956), translated into Arabic by Dr. Omar A. Farrukh, a prolific academic translator and member of the Islamic Research Association, Bombay. George Sarton was considered the founder of the history of science as an independent discipline, and was a proponent of indisciplinary approaches, including not only the combination of scientists and historians, but historians of both Latin and Arabic scientific literature, two traditionally independent disciplines. The topic of the lecture, the so-called "incubation" of Western culture, refers to the Islamic Golden Age, during which Muslim scientists studied Ancient Greek mathematics and natural philosophy and made many of their own interpretations and additions. It was the resulting plethora of Arabic scientific texts which then went on, when translated into Latin, to spark the Italian Renaissance and the "re-birth" of Greek learning (though it was by that time as much Muslim as Greek) in the West. Sarton was among the first modern Westerners to make this connection and to highlight the importance of Arabic literature, making this particular lecture an important building block of the history of science as a discipline. - Light wear and toning, in good condition. 4to. 4 pp. on bifolium. With 3 black-and-white photographic illustrations, including a portrait of King Ibn Saud. Interesting account of the close Saudi-American ties forged after the 1933 Concession Agreement. It describes the friendly relationship between King 'Abd al-'Aziz and Aramco, which involved the frequent exchange of valuable gifts. The King presented "his Aramco friends [with] noble Arabian horses, gold-mounted swords, daggers, watches, and Oriental rugs", a courtesy that the Americans recipocrated with exquisite boxes of gold and a golden coffee service, as well as "a complete American cowboy's outfit, with chaps, sombrero, and a gorgeous saddle mounted in gold and silver" - the latter perhaps constituting one of the more peculiar presents. - Further, the article describes friendly interactions between Arabs and Americans and discusses the company's plans to advance Arabian infrastructure and to foster education and housing. - Small marginal flaws. Somewhat toned.

This excellent souvenir photo album depicts the golf tourney hosted by the Youngstown Country Club in honor of Campbell’s 1854-1933 72nd birthday in 1926. The opening photo depicts all the participants and dignitaries at the Country Club followed by images of players on the greens. The 18-hole course was built on the 131-acre Holland Farm and designed by Walter Travis featuring a $ 60000 Clubhouse which was noted for elegance and model comfort. These images depict the quintessential 1920’s golfing excursion including those of players the greens the roughs caddies and even an image of what appears to be Walter Travis himself taking a turn on the links. The year before in 1925 the Youngstown Country Club had hosted the 25th Open Championship of the Western Golf Assoc. and legends of the game including Walter Hagen Gene Sarazen and Tommy Armour III all played the course. Campbell was an enthusiastic golfer until his death holding a similar tourney in 1929 on his 75th birthday. He had begun his business career by forming the Youngstown Ice Co. in the summer of 1884 and by 1890 was hired as manager of the Trumbull Iron Co. later consolidated into Union Iron & Steel Co. In 1901 he founded Youngstown Steel and Tube Co. but after a failed merger at the beginning of the Great Depression his health declined. See: Ted Heineman James A. 4to. 8 pp. With woodcut title vignette. Printed sheet folded into a pamphlet, unsewn and unbound. Rare Portuguese account of one of several unsuccessful 18th century attempts by Muslim forces to recapture Oran. This operation took place in March and April of 1759, nearly three decades after the Spanish conquest of the city in 1732. Oran was repeatedly attacked by Algerian and Ottoman forces, but remained under Spanish rule until 1792. The report concludes with a table showing the numbers of cannonballs, shells and bullets fired in the battle. - Light browning; folds weakeend; uncut and untrimmed. Only seven copies traced in library catalogues internationally. A rare historical source on an otherwise poorly documented military campaign. BGUC Misc., 7835. OCLC 504039661.
4to. 8, (2) pp. With additional panegyrical matter: 2 ff., 2 single sheets. All with woodcut initials and headpieces. A set of French (and Latin) eulogies addressed to "Dominique Ottoman", or Osman, the son of Sultan Ibrahim I, who was captured with his mother by the Maltese fleet in 1644 and educated by the Knights of Malta to become a Dominican friar. As an adolescent he was baptized and adopted the name Dominique de Saint-Thomas on 23 February 1656. He studied in Naples and Rome and went to Paris in 1664, where he spent two years. In 1667 he travelled to Candia on Crete, a Venetian-ruled city besieged by Ottoman forces since 1648, on an unsuccessful mission to convince the latter to make peace. Appointed vicar general on Malta around 1669, he returned to the island, where he spent his final years. - Louis de Puch's formal address of 8 pages is followed by a 12-line madrigal on a separate leaf. This same madrigal is present as a broadside on another single sheet, as well as on the first of two conjoined additional leaves, the second of which contains a Latin elogy in praise of St. Dominicus (signed P[uch] L[odovicus]). Finally, a large quarto leaf (showing traces of folds) contains an unsigned French sonnet "Au serenissime prince Dominique Ottoman fils aisné du Sultan Ibrahim, religieux de l'Ordre de S. Dominique". - Occasional slight foxing and creasing. A rare ensemble. OCLC records Puch's encomium only at the French National Library, the University of Tübingen, and the University of Pennsylvania. 15 loose black leaves with b/w photographs (mostly 8” x 10”) and ephemera (letters, small advertising posters, telegrams, ticket stubs) adhered to rectos and versos; 20 photographs in all. Leaves quite brittle and chipped at the edges; some photographs a little wavy (from the adhesive) or creased, but for the most part clean, and always intelligible; large tear across one of the posters, fragile, but with no loss. Centered around a Carnival and Field Day, this collection features photographs of, or correspondence from, some famous characters: Tom Mix (an actor in early Western movies, who performed at the event), F. W. Blanchard (an early Los Angeles developer, first president of the Hollywood Bowl, and director of the event), Miss Hessie Hallett and her horse Arabjay (performers), James D. Phelan (politician, civic leader, and banker, who contributed personnel to the event), Kaiser Wilhelm II (photographed in the form of an effigy hung at the event), and William Taft (who, via telegram, regrets that he cannot attend). Offers a cursory glance at the event’s inner workings, with telegrams, special ticket stubs and lunch coupons for participants (offered by The Patriotic Mothers of Sons in Service), a copy of the program and list of organizers, and a typed financial statement. But the highlight - and focus - of the collection are the photographs of the beautiful horses that were featured in the rodeo events, races, and fancy mounts. A day-long extravaganza that included marching bands, military maneuvers, wrestling, boxing, tug-of-war, and more, this glimpse at a moment of grandstanding captures more than a singular event in California’s (and America’s) history, as whispers of the tumultuous time are discernable throughout.
1030 x 700 mm. Chart showing "Quarantine Island to Coal Island including Al Basra" (scale 1:10,000), "Abadan" (scale 1:12,500) and "Mohammerah Bar" (scale 1:12,500) including tidal information, compass roses, soundings, seabed notations, currents, sandbanks, lighthouses and beacons marked in orange, inland elevations, detailing and buildings. First published in 1921, revised in 1926. Signs of contemporary use. Folded.
1942Ms. map (black and brown ink on paper). 735 x 412 mm. Hand-drawn map showing the Arabian Peninsula, the Indian subcontinent and the coast of Burma with the vast expanses of sea they border, reaching from the Suez Canal and Kenya in the West to the Maldives and on to Sumatra in the East. Signed and dated "Dr. L C Hofmann 1942" at bottom right (probably not the Dutch professor of Civil Law, Ludwig Christoph Hofmann [b. 1902]).
782 x 640 mm. In full colour. E48°-E54°/N28°-N32°. Folded. Third edition of this wartime map of the Bushehr area on the southwestern coast of Persia, on the Arabian Gulf. The city was occupied by British troops during the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran; these were replaced by American soldiers in 1942, who installed a military supply route for the Soviet Union through Iran (the "Persian Corridor"). Interestingly, the present map was copied by the German Luftwaffe as early as 1942 and distributed as "Weltkarte 1:1.000.000 (Iran) / H-39/G-39, Bushire. Hergestellt im Auftrage des Generalstabs des Heeres, Abt. für Kriegskarten und Vermessungswesen (II)". - Somewhat dusty and showing slight edge wear. Very rare. OCLC 1047892528 (a single record).
Colour printed map, 685 x 905 mm. Scale 1:7,500,000. With an inset map of "the Moslem World; percentage of Moslems in total population". Large map of Asia and the Middle East in 1952, published for the National Geographic Magazine. The map clearly shows the unresolved nature of several borders due to the waning colonial power of France and Great Britain. Notations mention that the "boundaries between India and Pakistan are not finally fixed", the borders between Saudi Arabia and Jordan are "undefined". Almost the complete Arabian Peninsula is without any border markings with only the single mention near Saudi Arabia and Trucial Oman (the future UAE) of "coastal sovereignty undefined". Showing the world before the oil boom in the Middle East, it is noteworthy that the only significant airport in Trucial Oman is that of Sharjah. - With two stamps of the University of Chicago library (including one withdrawal stamp) on the back. A few small repaired tears and some discolouring at the edges; in very good condition.
4to. 8 pp. With woodcut title vignette and armorial headpiece. Wrapperless pamphlet. Very rare report about one of several unsuccessful attempts by Muslim forces to recapture Oran, causing the loss of five Algerian and two Ottoman battle ships. Published anonymously by José Freire de Monterroyo Mascarenhas (1670-1760), the polyglot editor of numerous travel accounts and topical pamphlets. - In Spanish hands since 1509, Oran had been captured by the Turks in 1708 while Spain was preoccupied with the War of the Spanish Succession. Spanish rule was re-established in Oran in July 1732, after which the fleet and the soldiers sent by Philip V returned to Spain, leaving a garrison of six thousand men in the city. In August of the same year, Hassan Bey intended to retake Oran, having asked for help from the Bey of Algiers. Hassan Bey repeatedly attacked the city for several months, allying himself with the Turks and the Algerians, but the city would remain under Spanish rule until 1792, when it suffered a massively destructive earthquake and King Charles IV handed the city back to the Ottoman Empire. - Rare; only 5 copies traceable in libraries worldwide. Barbosa Machado II, 856. Inocêncio V, 348. BGUC Misc., 81. Fonseca, Pseudonymos, 236. OCLC 27862273.
