Valentino e Adriano, amici da sempre, hanno quasi trent'anni e un lavoro appena iniziato, ma nel cuore coltivano un sogno inconfessato, quello di partire in bicicletta per un giro intorno al mondo. Non lo pianificano, decidono di andare e basta. Si prendono una settimana di ferie, senza avvisare nessuno che quella sarà solo l'antipasto. Dopo otto giorni di viaggio, a Trieste, spediscono lettere ad amici e parenti "Non torniamo, siamo partiti per un giro del mondo in bicicletta". Il loro viaggio, considerato il periodo e le condizioni geopolitiche di alcuni Paesi, è una vera avventura, un'impresa che li consacrerà nel tempo come i primi pionieri in bicicletta italiani: quasi 28.000 km attraversando l'est Europa, la Turchia, l'Iran, l'Iraq, l'Indonesia, il Giappone, l'America, il Canada. Un tragitto fatto di incontri, cadute, aggressioni, notti in cella, lavori occasionali e ospitalità generosa. I due amici rientreranno a Torino nell'inverno del 1958, in tempo per festeggiare il Natale.
