ref. 8807Albuquerque: Mark Attwood 1990. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 1st and only edition: "This book is no. 41 in a limited edition of 50. Printed from linocuts on Rives heavyweight paper using a Dufa flat-bed offset press." On the next page preceding the title page: "Another Day in Paradise is a collection of images by a group of people from different countries and backgrounds. Artists printers students curators a director and a doctor participated. Each person was invited to make a linocut on the theme of 'Another Day in Paradise'. No images were edited. One book was printed for each participant." The book is lg. 8vo bound in coarse linen with no titles untrimmed edges. Condition vg; the binding has been slightly distorted by the laying in of a linocut described below. No text in the book other than that quoted above. Attwood whose blindstamped chop-mark appears on the above-quoted limitation page was certified a master printer by Albuquerque's Tamarind Institute about this time; he was soon to return to his native South Africa to found the Artists' Press which arguably has become as important to printmaking in Africa as Tamarind is in the U.S. Famous South African artist Erika Hibbert currently published there by Attwood contributes to this book in what may be her first appearance. Also appearing are Rebecca Schnelker Tamarind curator since 1978 and co-compiler of the Tamarind catalog raisonne; Garo Antreasian Tamarind's first director; Jeff Ryan who with Attwood helped invent the technique of dry lithography; Rita Deanin Abbey author Edward Abbey's second wife who still exhibits in Santa Fe; Bill Lagattuta shop manager at Tamarind; Jaune Quick-To-See Smith a Flathead-Shoshone artist whose work is in much demand; Pawel Frackiewicz who heads the Academy of Fine Art in Wroclaw Poland; Marge Devon a director of Tamarind; Mary Ristow who had a solo show in 1999; Jose Rodriguez now a well-known plein-air painter; Valerie Arber whose work inhabits the Rule Gallery in Denver and about 20 others. This copy apparently belonged to contributor Martha Slaymaker who is exhibited in the Albuquerque airport among many other places and was a fine artist in many media. Her son now runs the company she founded Slaymaker Fine Art Ltd. Laid in are 2 extra copies of her litho and also her original linocut the piece of linoleum itself. Interestingly she SIGNED the linoleum but faintly so her name cannot be seen on the printed versions. Mark Attwood hardcover

ref. 11058Two formats 190 x 152 mm. & 150 x 365 mm. Oguni machi Kotamagawa å°å›½ç”ºå°çމå·: 1865-67. This archive describes the manufacture and regulation of yamajio mountain salt in the town of Oguni machi on the Tama River in the mountainous area of Yamagata Prefecture north of Niigata. The onsen springs of the town are rich in minerals and were used to manufacture salt for local and regional inhabitants. Today there are very few producers of mountain salt due to the laborious process but it is highly valued by connoisseurs of salt for its delicate taste. Our archive consists of: 1. Manuscript drawing 243 x 327 mm. showing the process of spraying the water on well-ventilated racks covered with branches of the shiba 柴 tree. This allowed the mineral-rich water to slowly drip into a large deep basin. The gathered water would then be boiled down leaving salt crystals. 2 & 3. The first two notebooks 10 & 5 leaves dated February and August 1865 contain details of production of the salt and names of those involved. 4. This notebook 11 leaves dated February 1865 is entirely devoted to the business of making and selling salt with records of quantities sellers and buyers prices received etc; 5. A document 14 leaves from the local magistrate's office dated February 1865 gives the names of salt manufacturers. 6. A notebook 5 leaves produced by the local magistrate's office regarding the sale and distribution of salt to many wholesalers in the city of Yonezawa with their seals dated October 1866. Somewhat stained but very legible. 7. Dated 1867 this notebook 8 leaves describes in great detail the process of saltmaking with descriptions of tools and other equipment techniques etc. unknown

1944ref. 1945221944. Gratitude for Churchill A substantial collection of letters from senior public and business figures thanking Edward Mortimer Mountain for presenting them with signed artist's proofs of A. Egerton Cooper's portrait of Churchill "Profile for Victory". Mountain chairman of the Eagle Star Insurance Company purchased the portrait and commissioned the proofs for presentation to prominent figures. In September 1942 Churchill sat for the sculptor William Reid Dick. Cooper acting as Dick's assistant began sketching Churchill who impressed by the result consented to a full portrait. "The resulting oil portrait to which Cooper gave the title 'Profile for Victory' was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in May 1943 where it was widely praised as a 'morale-booster'" Black p. 12. It depicts Churchill seated in profile smoking a cigar with a folded newspaper on his lap. Mountain purchased the portrait and donated it to the Carlton Club in 1948; it still hangs there. The album opens with a reproduction of the portrait a title page reading "A few acknowledgements from recipients of signed Artist's Proof's from colour plates of the Portrait of the Prime Minister" and an index of correspondents. All the letters are addressed to Mountain except Clementine Churchill's which is addressed to Cooper: "How very kind of you to send me those excellent proofs your portrait of my husband". All date from 1944 most from January. Other correspondents include the lord mayor of London - "It is undoubtedly one of the finest that has been done" - the governor of the Bank of England the governor general of Canada Lords Beaverbrook and Rothermere the chairman of the Stock Exchange the editor of The Times and numerous titled figures. 1872ref. List2423Montana Territory 1872. Lot of seventy-six checks measuring 8 ½ x 4 inches with vignette illustration of a prospector and his dog. With one additional document relating to the Hershfield account with the Bank of California. Most checks issued to “Gold Coin” and drawn on the Bank of California in San Francisco. The checks are printed by Robert F. Macey Stationery in New York. Fine condition with an occasional tear and chip. Fine. In 1870 one out of ten residents of Montana Territory were of Chinese descent a figure that would decline precipitously in the ensuing decades until Chinese-Americans made up less than one percent of the population around the turn of the century. Chinese immigrants arrived in Montana following the discovery of gold in Bannack and Virginia City in the 1860s. Many of the Chinese immigrants settled and worked in the Big Belt Mountains east of Helena including the Cave Cooper Oregon and Confederate Gulches. Collected here are a collection of seventy six checks from Helena in 1870 and 1871 written to Chinese-owned businesses and cashed at the L.H. Hershfield and Brother bank in Helena and drawn on the Bank of California in San Francisco. The checks contain the names of over thirty different Chinese merchants operating in Montana at the time - with some companies like Wan Yuen and Co. having multiple checks present. As a group they offer an interesting map of the Chinese-American business community operating at the time and the duplicate checks which sometimes have notes on the verso giving a representation of the relative size of the firms and individuals involved. The LH Hershfield & Bro. Banking House in Helena operated from 1865 to 1882 in Last Chance Gulch near the corner of Bridge and Warren Streets. It later became the Merchants National Bank from 1882-1898 then the Union Bank and Trust Company from 1898 to 1859. Hershfield also had a banking operation in Virginia City during the Gold Rush period. Overall the group documents the Chinese-American community during the period and the breadth of economic activities of Chinese-Americans in Montana’s early mining camps. unknown

1943ref. 211901943. WWII Japanese American Japanese American incarceration archive circa 1940s documenting the personal lives of Japanese American detainees at Poston War Relocation Center in Arizona and Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming during World War II. Executive Order 9066 authorized the forced removal and incarceration of more than 120000 persons of Japanese ancestry two thirds of them United States citizens. This archive provides direct material evidence of communication and daily life in the War Relocation Authority camp system. An addressed envelope postmarked February 20 1943 connects two of the ten major incarceration sites indicating a maintained interpersonal network across camps. Photographs in this archive depict a young Japanese American woman in Western dress posed outdoors with barracks visible in several backgrounds and include an image of a young girl on a see-saw before rows of camp housing illustrating the family and youth experience in the camps. Archive of 8 pieces including 7 photographs mostly black and white with one color and 1 post stamped envelope addressed to "Mrs. Asako Kudari" sic at Block 15 21 F Heart Mountain Center Wyoming. Circa 1940s. The envelope bears a purple United States stamp depicting an eagle above the slogan "Win the War" and is postmarked February 20 1943 from Block 44 3A Poston Relocation Center Arizona. Photographs measure approximately 6.5 x 3.5 inches to 2.25 x 3.25 inches. Several images show detainees with camp barracks in the background; others portray a young woman with a Japanese American man wearing glasses suggesting prewar memories though no inscription confirms dating. Poston located in Yuma County Arizona was the largest of the War Relocation Authority camps while Heart Mountain in Park County Wyoming confined nearly 14000 people at its peak. Heart Mountain became a focal point of organized resistance to the military draft of Nisei men in 1944 when 85 young men and seven leaders of the Fair Play Committee were prosecuted under the Selective Service Act after challenging the legality of conscripting citizens while their civil rights were suspended. The present archive predates that confrontation but documents the correspondence networks and ordinary domestic life of the immigrants and citizens detained. Minor edge wear and light surface handling to photographs; envelope with expected postal folds and moderate age toning; overall very good condition. An archive linking two major incarceration sites. unknown
