A photograph of federal troops sent into the West Virginia coalfields during the final stages of the Battle of Blair Mountain showing soldiers from Fort Thomas Kentucky setting up tents outside miners' homes at Sharples West Virginia. The Battle of Blair Mountain was the culmination of several years of violent conflict between coal miners mine operators and law enforcement in southern West Virginia. In late August 1921 thousands of armed miners marched toward Logan County where they encountered a force of deputies mine guards state police and volunteers entrenched along Blair Mountain. President Warren G. Harding responded by ordering federal troops into the region; approximately 2100 soldiers were ultimately dispatched from several posts including Fort Thomas. Their arrival on September 2-3 effectively ended the fighting as miners unwilling to engage the United States Army surrendered their weapons and returned home.
