There are also views of local schools churches hotels homes residences shops and a fishing scene as well as an interesting view of Main Street in Granite on June 9 1891 showing the street flooded with rushing water. Charles Weitfle a German immigrant was a Union photographer during the Civil War and is best known as a producer of stereoviews. 1880ref. 57333Chicago: Rand McNally & Co. ca. 1880. Folding Rand McNally Map and Promotional for Eastern Texas Missouri and Arkansas A scarce promotional for Missouri and Arkansas published by the St. Louis Iron Mountain and Southern Railway featuring a folding map by Rand McNally & Co. The map shows cities rivers railways and geographical features from eastern Texas through Louisiana Arkansas Missouri Mississippi and parts of Illinois Indiana and Alabama. The Iron Mountain Railway owned a large land grant in the central United States but it was not allowed to sell until the railway was completed; now that time had come and they were advertising it heavily. Some of the attractions promoted in the text include wild game hunting including squirrels resources such as zinc and coal good soil river and rail transportation telegraph service "cheap homes in Missouri and Arkansas" and low property taxes. They also exhort the nervous migrant: "This is the time to have decision of character or the opportunity will be lost to you and to your family forever. The strong-hearted Europeans who settled America did not know what they would reap from planting in strange soils and climates. Why should you hesitate about a country peopled an hundred years and well known Have manhood and come." The authors do not limit their reach to the United States either as they make sure to note after listing their prices that "One dollar in American is equal to about four shillings in English money." Also included is a panel of text with a table describing the climate of Little Rock and a list of instructions to railroad agents. The St. Louis Iron Mountain and Southern Railway originally established to deliver iron ore from Iron Mountain Missouri to St. Louis eventually stretched from eastern Texas through Missouri and Arkansas. In 1883 it was acquired by Jay Gould and in the 1900s merged into the Missouri Pacific and later Union Pacific Railroads. The folksong "Iron Mountain Baby" tells the true story of a Civil War veteran who walking along the railroad collecting building materials discovered a baby who had been apparently thrown from the train in a valise. When the child grew older the railway paid for his education. The Iron Mountain Baby's story became popular around the United States and has been recorded in numerous forms throughout the years including the 2014 stage musical adaptation Bright Star written by musician and comedian Steve Martin. Though the Iron Mountain Railway put out a number of such promotionals in the late 1870s and early 1880s they remain rather scarce; OCLC records this edition focusing on Arkansas and Missouri only at Harvard and the University of Arkansas at Mullins. Old folds. Minor tanning. Slight splitting along some folds and a few cross-folds. Very good. unknown books
ref. 5863MONTANA. ALS. 2 pg. 8 x 10. October 22 1869. Bozeman. An autograph letter signed W.S. Darby in Bozeman to Major Kinney Virginia City: We arrived all O.K. evenig sic before last and our mutual friend the Marshall sicat once took possession of the goods wares & merchdise sic ofDoughty & Wilcot. The latter have evidently been going in for a big thing and are much crestfallen at the customary proceedings. The stuck left is in very good condition but being all displayed in a very handsome store looks worse than it really is. I have been placed in possession of it and am now making an inventory under the order of the Court: If I can purchase very low I could make some money out of it. The writer is also clearly in some debt to the sendee as he discusses returning $200 at the bottom of the page and visiting him: I shall make time to go to Virginia for a few daysI fully spect I can get around to it in a week. However at this time he can only offer a check for $40 he crossed out $35. While little is known about either gentleman the fact that the letter is going from Bozeman Montana to Virginia City Nevada reveals the intertwined finances and societies of new post-war Western settlements as friends and business partners struggle to develop financial stability in their new situations. Condition is fair with fading and minor tears on the bottom of the page and professional repairs to the verso. unknown books

ref. 11058Two formats 190 x 152 mm. & 150 x 365 mm. Oguni machi Kotamagawa å°å›½ç”ºå°çމå·: 1865-67. This archive describes the manufacture and regulation of yamajio mountain salt in the town of Oguni machi on the Tama River in the mountainous area of Yamagata Prefecture north of Niigata. The onsen springs of the town are rich in minerals and were used to manufacture salt for local and regional inhabitants. Today there are very few producers of mountain salt due to the laborious process but it is highly valued by connoisseurs of salt for its delicate taste. Our archive consists of: 1. Manuscript drawing 243 x 327 mm. showing the process of spraying the water on well-ventilated racks covered with branches of the shiba 柴 tree. This allowed the mineral-rich water to slowly drip into a large deep basin. The gathered water would then be boiled down leaving salt crystals. 2 & 3. The first two notebooks 10 & 5 leaves dated February and August 1865 contain details of production of the salt and names of those involved. 4. This notebook 11 leaves dated February 1865 is entirely devoted to the business of making and selling salt with records of quantities sellers and buyers prices received etc; 5. A document 14 leaves from the local magistrate's office dated February 1865 gives the names of salt manufacturers. 6. A notebook 5 leaves produced by the local magistrate's office regarding the sale and distribution of salt to many wholesalers in the city of Yonezawa with their seals dated October 1866. Somewhat stained but very legible. 7. Dated 1867 this notebook 8 leaves describes in great detail the process of saltmaking with descriptions of tools and other equipment techniques etc. unknown books
