"Le tableau Les demoiselles D'Avignon, qui a été exposé la première fois en 1917, a fait l'objet au cours des années de recherches approfondies et de nombreuses spéculations. Qu'a voulu représenter le jeune Picasso dans cette peinture grotesque? Qu'a-t-il voulu exprimer à travers elle? Pourquoi a-t-il consacré autant d'esquisses et d'études à cette toile avant de la terminer en 1907? Autant de questions restées sans réponse. Picasso lui-même n'a jamais été clair au sujet du sens de ce tableau et le peu qu'il en a dit plus tard est plus de nature à épaissir le mystère qu'à l'élucider. Même ses amis proches, pourtant bien placés pour en savoir plus, ont gardé le silence. Etait-ce une scène de bordel? Fallait-il chercher l'explication dans l'influence de la sculpture africaine? Plusieurs pistes de recherche ont permis d'établir qu'à l'époque de la création de cette oeuvre énigmatique Picasso était attiré par l'ésotérisme qui depuis la Fin de Siècle était devenu une source d'inspiration importante pour les écrivains et les artistes. C'est la piste que l'auteur de cet ouvrage a voulu privilégier et approfondir. Elle mène à l'évidence que Picasso, l'influence de certains amis aidant, avait acquis une bonne connaissance de l'occultisme, si bien qu'il en connaissait les multiples facettes qui pouvaient lui servir de source d'inspiration. Elle permet à l'auteur, au bout d'une enquête passionnante, d'échafauder une interprétation entièrement nouvelle des Demoiselles d'Avignon, en tant que métaphore de l'artiste-créateur" (notice de l'éditeur).

In 1939 the painter Iwamatsu Jun 1908–1994 and his artist wife Tomoe arrived in the U.S. as political refugees. During World War II Iwamatsu used his artistic talents for the U.S. war effort and he adopted a pseudonym Taro Yashima to protect his young son whom he left behind in Japan. The New Sun which was published in the U.S. in 1943 is an account of his life in prewar Japan. In its depiction of ordinary Japanese The New Sun is both an indictment of Japanese militarism and a plea for American understanding of "the enemy." Told mainly though Yashima’s powerful artwork it is a personal and political text of a rural doctor’s son who becomes an anti-imperialist artist-activist. Yashima recounts how his wife and their peers were imprisoned and brutalized by the Tokkoka Japan’s secret police often for months without being formally charged or knowing when they would be released. Despite the arbitrary deprivations and cruelties of life in prison and in Imperial Japan Yashima retains faith in the regenerative possibilities of art and in a future without tyranny.
