1954Best.-Nr. 12610New York: The Viking Press 1954. Near fine in very good minus dust jacket. Early edition of the charming tale of a walk home from school through a lively Japanese village inscribed and with a stunning original watercolor by Yashima. Taro and his wife Mitsu real names Jun Iwamatsu and Tomoe Sasako were antifascist activists in addition to artists; they met in the Japanese Proletarian Artists' League. After being arrested and tortured by the Japanese government for their activism they fled to America; they took on their pseudonyms when they were hired by the Office of War Information and later the Office of Strategic Services to protect their family still living in Japan. They produced anti-military propaganda for Japanese consumption in various forms throughout World War II including illustrating handbills for dropping over battlefields. After the war Taro and Mitsu wrote PLENTY TO WATCH and their other children's books to tell their American-born daughter Momo about life in Japan before the war. Based on Taro's childhood in a small village this story brings to life all of the active workshops and craftspeople of early 20th century Japan. 10'' x 7.5''. Staple bound in mauve card covers with black lettering illustrated rear cover paste-on illustration on front. Some staining to wraps and scuffing along spine internally clean and very good. Curious self-published retelling of the Epic of Gilgamesh by Thomas B. Gilmore of Angels Camp California writing as T Byron G. Gilmore started as an oil painter before turning to his visionary writing in this and Synthesis: The Hermetic Tarot which he also published in 1988. He has described his books as proposing his own "geocubic" account of the universe. He later produced a Gilgamesh! tarot deck. This particular text maps the Gilgamesh's journeys onto the zodiac and planets then connects the myth with Tarot language ancient history and his own search for the ultimate source of existence. A very distinct piece of late 20th century California esoterica with crude drawings homemade production and personal revelation. We find T Byron G published a "reannotated" version of this text in 1995 for which OCLC shows 6 holdings. But we find no holdings for this 1988 original. . T Byron G Publishing unknown
