1789réf. 42124Boston: Printed by Adams & Nourse 1789. 54pp with the half title but lacking the final blank. Disbound. Half title and title leaves moderately foxed. Else a clean text. Good plus. Bridge speaks a few weeks after Washington's inauguration as President: "Man was originally formed for society and furnished with faculties adapted thereto." But not just any society-- only one which like the United States under its Constitution "protects the subjects in the peaceable possession of their just rights properties and priviledges." Bridge rejects one-man rule because the temptations of power are corrupting. He notes that God helped us obtain independence "upon terms too as honorable to America as they were humiliating to Britain." The rulers' task is to encourage education and useful pursuits and to distribute justice fairly and impartially. Bridge pleads for the bond-holders of the new country. They should be paid in full. "They risqued their dear-earned interest and their still dearer lives for the freedom of their country." America he says is "blest with the bright beams of gospel light and grace." FIRST EDITION. 1893réf. 234551893. Boston and Albany Railroad disaster photo archive documenting the catastrophic 1893 bridge collapse at Chester Massachusetts when the westbound Chicago Limited Express crashed through an iron bridge spanning the Westfield River. The wreck occurred on August 31 1893 after the bridge failed beneath the weight of the train sending locomotives and passenger cars into the river gorge below. Fourteen people were killed and dozens injured in a disaster that drew national newspaper attention during a period when American railroads were rapidly expanding passenger service while struggling with aging infrastructure and increasing locomotive weight. Photo archive of 4 albumen photographs mounted on original boards each 8" x 10" Chester Massachusetts August 31 1893. The images show passenger coaches twisted into the collapsed bridge structure tracks hanging above shattered timbers and the locomotive overturned amid splintered debris along the riverbank. One view centers on a heavily damaged passenger car resting beside broken rails while groups of men stand surveying the destruction. Another records the locomotive and tender surrounded by wreckage and recovery workers gathered along the track bed. Smoke rises above the debris field in one scene while telegraph poles hillsides and the river valley remain visible in the background situating the wreck within the narrow western Massachusetts rail corridor. Pencil inscriptions along the mounts identify "Chester" with date "Aug. 31st 1893." The Chester wreck became one of several highly publicized railroad disasters of the late nineteenth century that intensified scrutiny of bridge engineering inspection standards and railroad safety during the peak era of American passenger rail expansion. By the 1890s express trains such as the Chicago Limited linked eastern industrial centers to the Midwest with unprecedented speed but the increased weight of modern locomotives placed enormous strain on bridges originally designed for lighter rolling stock. These photographs preserve not only the violence of the collapse itself but also the physical reality of nineteenth-century rail disaster recovery when wreckage removal body recovery and public investigation unfolded directly at the crash site. Light toning scattered surface wear and minor mount wear consistent with age; images remain clear and detailed. Overall in very good condition. unknown

Very good/ very good A tantalising as yet! unsupported association copy of the attractive limited edition George Bourne's familial farming memoir illustrated with six sympathetic woodcuts by Stephen Bone with an inscription ascribed to fellow woodcut artist author and suffragette Clemence Housman supposedly gifting it to the prolific and prolifically censored Irish novelist Norah Hoult: "To Norah from C. H. Christmas 1923"; according to a PO note "Alan Hancox the Cheltenham-based antiquarian bookseller who sold this to me says the inscription on the endpaper is by Clemence Housman. to Norah Hoult". Credibly in Housman's hand in 1923 the year of inscription the retiring artist and author would have been 62 and living briefly in Hampshire with her brother Laurence en route to their final home in Street from London; while her own novels and work for the Suffrage Atelier was behind her Housman was still producing wood engraving of her brother's drawings to illustrate his books with 1922 seeing Jonathan Cape issue three volumes of fairy stories and Christian fantasies on which the siblings collaborated. The significantly younger Hoult 1898–1984 had recently moved to London and was writing for a range of publications including Time and Tide the Telegraph and Pearson's Magazine; her first book Poor Women wouldn't appear for another five years. It's possible that Housman and Hoult may have met through literary circles and it seems likely that they would have been sympathetic to each other. Hoult would go on to nurture a close cross-generational friendship with her neighbour in wartime Kensington the novelist and suffragist Violet Hunt on whom she based her protagonist Claire in her 1944 novel of memory loss There Were No Windows. Alex. Bridge was a Tragara Press collector and correspondent of its founder Alan Anderson. With thanks to Elizabeth Crawford. Jonathan Cape paperback
