1799rif. ST17632cParis: de l'Imprimerie de Crapelet an VII 1799. 228 x 150 mm. 9 x 6". Two volumes. Very attractive 19th century red morocco by Capé stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in French fillet border raised bands compartments with central quatrefoil surrounded by lacy gilt tooling gilt lettering gilt dentelles all edges gilt. Housed in a later marbled slipcase. WITH engraved frontispiece by Gaucher and 21 ENGRAVED PLATES after Marillier Monsiau and Ponce as called for AND EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 46 PLATES comprised of a suite of 20 small plates a suite of 21 large plates and five portraits. Verso of front free endpaper with the bookplate of Jacques Bastenet. Cohen-de Ricci 1035; Graesse VI 393. See also: Cohen-de Ricci 1047-48 for the plates by Moreau. ◆Two three-inch abrasions on one cover and a hint of wear to joints both very well disguised by refurbishment leather faintly soiled but the decorative bindings still lustrous and quite pleasing without any significant condition issues. Occasional mostly light foxing never serious and most of the plates clean but noticeable enough to be regrettable some of the smaller extra-illustrations slightly browned due to paper stock but still a book with considerable appeal inside and out with the engravings richly impressed. This printing of Voltaire's mock-heroic "Pucelle" a licentious burlesque based on the Joan of Arc story features the same beautiful engravings found in the Didot edition of 1795 but without the frames plus two additional suites of plates taken from other editions. The set of 20 small plates seem to be close copies of Gravelot's illustrations from the 1762 Geneva edition of "La Pucelle"; the set of 21 larger images are by Moreau all but two being before letters. The latter set probably comes from the suite of images for Voltaire's "Oeuvres" published by Renouard in 1802 of which there were just 40 copies before letters according to Cohen-de-Ricci. Capé was one of the most distinguished binders in France in the middle years of the 19th century being especially well known for the delicacy of his work as evidenced by our spines. He was the binder to the Empress Eugénie and Béraldi calls him "the Bozérian of the second Empire.". de l'Imprimerie de Crapelet unknown books

Original boards covered in marbled paper in muted tones of rose blue and cream parchment spine and tips top edge gilt other edges untrimmed. 11 elegant full-page illustrations and three vignettes by Thomas Lowinsky. Dreyfus 48. ◆Tiny dent to head of spine otherwise A NEAR-MINT COPY clean bright and unread. Described in its prospectus as "the airiest and most charming of all Voltaire's romances" this fable set in an exotic land reveals the frothy précieux side of Voltaire's complex personality. Lowinsky 1892-1947 has cleverly illustrated the tale with willowy figures sporting the towering hairdos and plunging necklines of Voltaire's own time and place to suggest that the frivolity of the story reflects homegrown decadence. This was the first of four books he illustrated for Nonesuch; his style is reminiscent of that of Beardsley. Nonesuch Press unknown books

Contemporary speckled calf with red calf spine label. Octavo in fours. Binding extremities lightly worn occasional light marginal dampstaining. 1760rif. 7699Geneve: Chez les Frères Cramer 1760 Early reprint published in the same year as the first edition. The first edition has a London imprint though it was actually printed in Geneva too and Voltaire's name does not appear on the title. Full modern speckled calf gilt-ruled spine edges stained red. Twelvemo. Small brown stain on verso of title-page and next recto some light dampstaining at top corner. Generally a very good copy. A spurious publication in which Voltaire blatantly pretends that this is a French translation of an original work by the brother of David Hume. According to Voltaire Hume's brother was pastor at an Edinburgh church and had produced two other plays which had been produced in London. "…il est le frère de ce célèbre philosophe Mr. Hume qui a creusé avec tant de hardiesse & de sagacité les fondements de la métaphysique & de la morale; ces deux philosophes sont également honneur à l'Ecosse leur patrie" preface. All editions of this work are rare. OCLC lists one copy of the present edition the Library of Congress copy. Of the first edition OCLC lists seven copies: Yale Maryland New York Public Library Cornell Harvard Texas Chicago. Chez les Frères Cramer, books

rif. 117621Glasgow Printed by Robert Urie 1759. . Fourth edition; 12mo 18 x 10.5 cm; a little toned front hinge reinforced; contemporary tree calf contrasting red morocco lettering-piece to spine joint and headcap repaired slightly scuffed and rubbed very good; 6 3-149 13pp. An early Glasgow printing of this interesting outsider's take on English society and its people precipitated by Voltaire's exile to Great Britain in 1726. The resulting Letters first published in 1734 following his return to Paris express his great admiration for the comparative religious freedom enjoyed by England's Quakers and Socinians as well as its constitutional monarchy 'where the Prince is all powerful to do good and at the same time restrain'd from committing evil' the implication being that England could provide a model for France's reform p.53. When the French edition was published the following year without the approval of the royal censor as Lettres Philosophique it caused a storm with copies confiscated and publicly burnt and Voltaire again forced to flee Paris. The work remains one of Voltaire's most widely known and read texts which helped introduce Bacon Locke and Newton to Europe's Enlightenment thinkers. It also contains an early account of Newton's famous discovery of gravity passed on to Voltaire by Newton's niece Catherine Barton as well as an early translation into French verse of Hamlet's soliloquy from Act 3 Scene 1: 'Demeure il faut choisir & passer à l'instant / De la vie à la mort ou d l'Etre au neant.' p.173. Widely ranked as Voltaire's most important early philosophical work and 'the first bomb hurled against the Ancien Régime' Babson. ESTC T137639. Glasgow, Printed by Robert Urie, 1759. unknown

1949rif. 148560New York: Hermitage House 1949. Hermitage House limited edition of Voltaire’s satirical masterpiece. Octavo bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands gilt ruling to the front and rear panels all edges gilt gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers with black and white illustrations. One of 1500 numbered copies this is number 500. In fine condition. Illustrated by Sydney Joseph. One of the most influential thinkers of the French Enlightenment François-Marie Arouet know by the nom de plum Voltaire was a resourceful and prolific writer. His works touched nearly every literary form including plays poems novels theoretical essays and scientific treatises. A forthright and candid advocate of civil liberties he frequently criticized the institutions of religious dogma and classism prevalent in 18th century France often doing so through satire to avoid censorship and imprisonment. Candide has ranked as one of the world's great satires since its first publication in 1759. It concerns the adventures of the youthful Candide who in the course of his travels in Europe and South America saw and suffered such misfortune that it was difficult for him to believe this was "the best of all possible worlds." Indeed it seemed to be quite the opposite. In brilliantly skewering such naïveté Voltaire mercilessly exposes and satirizes romance science philosophy religion and government — the ideas and forces that permeate and control the lives of men.
