1832Best.-Nr. BIBLIO-28129Henry Bohn London first edition 1832. Brown boards perhaps later printed title-labels to front board and spine spine-label perhaps a later addition 8vo 23 cm. 102 pp errata slip tipped-in at p17. Dibdin's survey of the state of the book trade in Bibliophobia came against the backdrop of his own difficult financial circumstances. The particular spur to publication was the ludicrously low prices realized at a sale by Evans on 19 August 1831 of some 13 manuscripts of Scott's novels: hoping to improve on an offer of £1000 for the manuscripts the owners consigned them to auction but realized little over £300. Dibdin laments this and numerous other exmples of shockingly low prices attributing the state of the market not just to a shortage of money but also altered tastes influenced by the impending Reform Bill and the cholera. Dibdin nevertheless manages to end on a note of optimism certain that the tide will turn: it did of course but not in his own lifetime. Presentation Copy inscribed by Dibdin on a front endpaper: " - Morgan Esq. From the Author". Loosely inserted is an autograph letter of Dibdin signed to a Mr Nugee at 20 St James Street proposing to call on him to collect "two precious documents" written on first 2 pages of a single sheet folded once further folded for posting and stamped with penny postage paid and remnants of wax seal. Francis Nugee "tailor &c." is listed at 20 St. James's Street Pall Mall in the 1843 London Post Office directory and other correspondence exists showing him to have been Dibdin's tailor. Small circular blindstamp on front free endpaper "Ex Bibliotheca Dr Detlev Mauss" partly cutting the leaf. Slight wear to head of spine minor marks to boards some foxing throughout otherwise Good. Henry Bohn, London, first edition, 1832 hardcover
1812Best.-Nr. BIBLIO-12977Harding and Wright London first edition 1812. Limited edition of 50 copies. Slightly later half calf and marbled boards edges sprinkled 8vo. 24 pp without title-page as issued several blank leaves bound in at end. Very scarce: Fifty copies were printed but it is rarely seen in the market: our copy sold at Swann in 2006 US $ 1320 and this seems to have been the last solo auction appearance subsequently there has been only a copy included in a bound volume of Dibdin rarities in the 2015 Pirie sale US $15000. Before that there were auction appearances in 1992 and 1939 making just four copies assuming no duplication in the salerooms in 85 years. Dibdin wrote the work "in five morning-sittings' while on holiday in Ramsgate in September 1812 taking a break from his labours on the Bibliotheca Spenseriana. The poem has some 554 lines of Dibdin's bibliographical advice and opinions in what he calls 'mongrel-blank' verse and it appears as 'Book 1' Dibdin had intended there to be a total of six books with the verse serving as a peg on which to hang 'such elaborate notes that the reader could disregard the verse' Jackson. Wise friends who saw this first canto dissuaded the author from proceeding with this very Dibdinesque plan so Book 1 is all that saw the light of day in a small private printing from which copies were sold 'at the mere sum which it had cost'. Provenance: Jean-Sylvain Van de Weyer 1802 -1874 an Anglophile served briefly as Prime Minister of Belgium in 1845-6 but is better known in bibliophilic circles as a distinguished book collector and grandfather of Oliver Brett Viscount Esher another such and as co-founder with Richard Monckton Miles of the Philobiblon Society and Vice-President of the London Library 1848-1874. Three bookplates on front endpapers: of Sylvain van de Weyer Harvard College Library Samuel Shapleigh bequest released stamp and Francis J. Gagliardi small Harvard College stamps on title-page and blindstamps on advertisement leaf and first text leaf small bookseller label of Phillip. C. Duschnes on rear pastedown endpaper. Spine scuffed joints worn but firm slight edgewear to boards some foxing to endpapers and blank leaves but text-leaves very clean with slight agetoning. 1829Best.-Nr. BIBLIO-59777Robert Jennings and John Major London second edition 1829. 3 vols later buckram with leather spine-labels 8vo 22 cm. xlii 421 1 iv 428 iv 481 1 pp ills plates. Dibdin's 'most readable book' according to Lister and Southey had welcomed the first edition as "one of the most beautiful and covetable books of modern times". It charts in wonderful detail his six and a -half months tour buying -or where unavailable admiring - book treasures in France and Germany. Dibdin is at his most exuberant - abroad for the first time in his life - and recounting his adventures with great spirit and a degree of self-congratulation : his complicated exhange negotiations which secured for Earl Spencer the 'Stuttgart Virgils' from le Brett the Royal Librarian and the King of Wurtemburg were described in a letter to Spencer as 'one of the most difficult cautiously and delicately-conducted negotiations in the annals of bibliographical diplomacy'.and Dibdin does not stint the reader in his account. Of this second edition he wrote in his Reminiscences: "A second edition - not divested of ornaments but contrariwise possessing some which do not appertain to its precursor. possessing in the running notes critical replies and biographical memoranda advantages which in these respects give it a superiority over the first."-Dibdin's Reminiscences v. 2 p. 696. Windle & Pippin A38b. A presentation set and subsequently owned by one of Dibdin's bibliographers. Volume 1 has an inscription in Dibdin's hand but unsigned on the verso of the front free endpaper: "The Reverend Bryant Burgess with the Author's sincere Regards"; it is signed on the recto of the front free endpaper by Bryant Burgess in ink and underneath by W. Sidney Scott in pencil. Bryant Burgess 1778-1846 a graduate of Exeter College Oxford was a curate at St. Marylebone and later Rector of St Benet Gracechurch and St Leonard Eastcheap. He is listed as a subscriber to Dibdin's Sermons 1825 and was described by Isaac N. Arnold as "an amateur artist of considerable merit a fine scholar and a very agreeable gentleman". Walter Sidney Scott 1900-1980 an author was the owner of an impressive Dibdin collection and spent considerable time working on a bibliographical catalogue of Dibdin's works "A Dibdin Library" 1962 which was never published he briefly mentions these volumes his second edition of Dibdin's "France and Germany" in that catalogue noting the binding as by Forbes. Generally a Good set soundly bound with some offsetting from the plates occasional foxing spots to the text and some browning and foxing to the plates tissue-guards where present and endpapers; volume 1 has staining to the frontispiece and volume 3 has staining to the lower fore-edge corners; there is a small piece of paper adhered to the contents page in volume 3. 1808Best.-Nr. BIBLIO-59775Printed by William Bulmer at the Shakspear Press Cleveland Row for William Miller bookseller and London London first edition 1808. Contemporary calf with red leather labels gilt edge decoration 8vo. clxxx 141. 320 pp ills. Attractively printed by William Bulmer -his first work for Dibdin. The text leaves something to be desired- as Lister comments "Dibdin announced on his title page that he was presenting the public with a new edition of Robinson's translation as printed by Abraham Vele in 1551 whereas he actually reproduced Alsop's edition of 1639 which in his Introduction p.clxxiii he had condemned as "one of the most careless and erroneous extant." He did so because it was easier to print from. Vele's text was set in black letter. " Dibdin's chief contribution was his 180 pages of introduction and a vast array of Dibdinesque footnotes.
