"The author describes and illustrates a tradition of nineteenth-century painting which he writes was 'a deep current running right through the century that had its source in the strange the imaginary and the fantastic. Often governed by that queen of all the faculties the imagination this 'alternative' tradition drew its eloquence from the individual's power of expression whether in silence or in a cry in dream or in waking clarity Goya with his extravagances was a contemporary of Louis David; the visionary Blake was a contemporary of Canova and his marbles.' The recurrent themes- nature and its horizons the individual and his depths sleep and its empire the elsewhere or the beyond woman and her faces light and shade- are traced from Goya Blake and Fuseli through many less obvious figures in the world of nineteenth-century art to Whistler to Munch to Klimt." -Jacket. 1946réf. UB-17953New York / Toronto: Rhinehart & Company 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. First Edition. Hardcover. Translated from the French by Peter C. Rhodes. Original pictorial dust jacket designed by Paul Galdone with green leaves on a red and yellow ground unclipped with $2.50 price on flap. An early jacket by Galdone who designed many trade jackets in the 1940s before becoming one of the best-known American picture-book illustrators. Jacket is chipped and edgeworn with some losses at head and tail of spine. Red cloth hardcover boards spine in black with gold lettering. Contents lightly foxed more pronounced at endsheets. Date "Sept. 15 - 48" written in ink to front pastedown. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH FIRST PRINTING. The copyright page carries Rinehart's circled "R" which the firm used to mark first printings. The French original appeared in New York the same year. This is the brothers' second novel and the follow-up to Canapé-Vert 1944 which won the Second Latin American Prize Novel Competition. The book follows a man from Port-au-Prince who withdraws to the countryside and comes up against the world of peasant belief Vodou and rural folklore that he had dismissed. The Marcelins wrote about Haitian country life from the inside without the exoticizing lens that shaped most American fiction about Haiti at the time. They treated folk belief as a real force in their characters' lives rather than as local color. Philippe Thoby-Marcelin 1904-1975 was a co-founder of La Revue Indigène in 1927 alongside Jacques Roumain Carl Brouard and Émile Roumer. The journal was a central organ of the Haitian indigéniste movement which grew out of opposition to the U.S. occupation. In 1946 the year this book appeared he helped found the short-lived Parti Socialiste Populaire. When the party was outlawed in 1948 he went into exile in the United States and worked as a translator for the Pan American Union. One printing quirk: the leaf facing the copyright page is headed "Frontispiece" but instead of an illustration it carries an epigraph from Emile Caro's study of George Sand. The epigraph describes country people watching for the passage of "the 'Great Beast'" and anticipates the novel's title and theme. The rear jacket panel advertises Canapé-Vert with review excerpts from the Saturday Review of Literature Fanny Butcher in the Chicago Tribune and William McFee in the New York Sun. . 1967réf. 127852Baltimore Maryland: Trustees of the Walters Art Gallery 1967. Hardcover. VG. Blue cloth boards with stamped gilt lettering on cover and spine; blue cloth slipcase xxvii 423 pp; color frontispiece 215 plates chiefly bw eight in color. A sharp bright copy. From the introduction: Interest in the Limoges enamels of the Renaissance was aroused in France as a consequence of the romantic movement and in particular of the predilection of such writers as Balzac Theophile Gautier and Prosper Merimee for evoking the drama of life at the Valois court in the Ile de France and the Loire valley during the sixteenth century and the magnificence of the art and fashion there. From the 1830s and 1840s no French art collector in the field of European decorative arts considered his collection complete without including masterpieces of the Limoges enamellers. The quest for Limoges enamels was no less passionate in England. Trustees of the Walters Art Gallery hardcover books
