Text in English. 272 pp. With 290 ills. 289 col. . 27 x 24 cm. -- with a bonus offer--; For more than 2000 years using the excellent clays of the Red River Valley Vietnamese potters have produced some of the most sophisticated ceramic artifacts in Southeast Asia dovetailing the Chinese ceramic tradition with other traditions--such as those of Cambodia and Champa--in original and idiosyncratic ways. The combination of skilled potting with somewhat "casual" finish calligraphic painting and certain chance effects in glazing are all qualities typical of Vietnamese ceramics. Today partly prompted by several recent archaeological retrievals these qualities are stimulating the interest of a widening circle of collectors and connoisseurs. The Elephant and the Lotus: Vietnamese Ceramics in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston considers this vital and hitherto obscured tradition by highlighting over 200 examples from the Museum's superb collection. Ranging from earthy and practical stoneware produced over two millennia ago the earliest Vietnamese potteries date back to the Hung period in 700 B.C. to the gloriously decorated ewers and bowls created a thousand years later or to the fine blue-and-white porcelains produced between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries before the advent of French colonial rule the works gathered here reflect the natural wonders of Vietnam and the ingenuity of its ceramists. With extensive presentations by expert Philippe Truong including an essay on the natural motifs particular to Vietnamese pottery The Elephant and the Lotus is both the first complete publication of a remarkable collection and an indispensable introduction to a rapidly growing field of study in Asian decorative arts. . 2007. 0878467173 . 1800rif. 315841800. Paris Chez Richard Caile et Ravier Libraires rue Haute-Feuille No. 11 An IX 1800-01 8° I-V VI-LVI 318 pp. 1 Tabelle. 2 Taf. feiner Pappband mit Rvg.; ungewöhnlich breites und frisches Exemplar. First Edition of one of the most important medical classics and one of the most valuable texts in the history of psychiatry written in the opening year of the new century. It is both a postcript to the eighteenth and a preface to the nineteenth century. Pinel wrote this treatise on the basis of his experience in the Bicêtre. His medical theories and classifications are very methodical and clear and they contain some original ideas but their importance pales in comparison with his work of hospital reform and reorganization by which a new tradition was established and a new perspective opened for practical and research psychiatry; it is this achievement which always come to mind when the name of Philippe Pinel is mentioned. On May 24 1798 at the risk of his own life and liberty he struck off the chains of the insane at the Bicêtre placing them in hospitals under lenient physicians and doing away with the abuses of drugging and blood-letting to which they were subjected. Desportes' poetry was durably influenced and shaped by Italian literature. The author indeed returns to France after a journey to Italy where he underwent the influence of Petrarch - his first poems are moreover criticized as neo-Petrarchan. His first book appeared in a collective collection and gathered his poetry imitated from Ariosto. His clear frank mannerist and refined poetry court poetry eclipsed that of Ronsard at the court of Henri III. It was in turn criticized and replaced by that of Malherbe. Desportes' literature nonetheless constitutes an important aspect of Renaissance poetry. Chez Mamert Patisson hardcover
