De Trobriand 1816-1897 was a French aristocrat who served honorably in the American Civil War reaching the rank of Major General. This memoir of his time during the Indian Wars was translated from the French by George Francis Will. The Lakeside Press was the fine printing arm of R.R. Donnelley which also had a more commercial side. This series of neglected titles began in 1903. These classics were not sold; they were gifted at Christmastime. Evidently no production records were kept so the number of copies printed is unknown. Quercus surmises around 1500 in these early years.This is a Very Good Plus copy. Red cloth binding; ruled titled and decrated in gilt. Clean text; xxxv 387 pages; top-edge is gilt; indexed with a map. Frontis portrait of de Trobriand; three other illustrations within. Previous-owner stamp on the FFEP. Just hints of rub to tips; spine lightly faded with the gilt titling rubbed. No dustjacket as issues. First Edition Thus. Hard Cover.
