1747réf. 91802n. l.: s. n. 1747. Fine. s. n. n. l. 1747 10 x 16.8 cm Relié First edition of this work published by the Société du Bout-du-Banc the celebrated literary salon presided over by Mademoiselle Jeanne-Françoise Quinault and the Comte de Caylus. This intimate circle originally comprising eight members would gather on Mondays at dinner to exchange ideas and to write; at the close of each meal every distinguished guest was required to set down a few lines whether in the coarse poissard style or in a more refined vein on paper. It was in this context that Les Fêtes roulantes ou les regrets des petites rues came into being in the wake of the celebrations held in Paris in honour of the Dauphin's second marriage to Marie-Josèphe de Saxe. Pastiche binding in plum half-shagreen spine with five raised bands framed by gilt dotted fillets and six compartments decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons marbled paper boards gilt top edge pastedowns and endpapers in shell-pattern marbled paper. Some minor rubbing to the paper of the lower board corners slightly bumped. ""In his youth the Comte de Caylus had paid considerable tribute to the literature of fairy tales which the translations from Arabic and Persian by Galland and Pétis de la Croix had brought into fashion; one does not find him again in these artificial creations to which he returned when he was nearly seventy. But in the intervening years his character as a writer emerged and declared itself in accordance with his manners and tastes and in how propitious a milieu! The Société du bout du banc that academy of Gallic ribaldry presided over by Mademoiselle Quinault; those suppers at which an inkwell served as centrepiece and which La Chaussée d'Armenonville Voisenon Moncrif the Grand Prior of Vendôme Duclos Salley and Crébillon fils enlivened with their bawdy and bantering wit. All men of letters with little taste for philosophy all content to let the world go its own way and finding it perfectly satisfactory as it was all of that sacred flock of Epicurus somewhat transformed by Circe in which each member is satisfied or very nearly with what their presiding lady declared sufficient for Duclos the least fastidious among them. The popular literature of the eighteenth century that is to say literature which took the common people as the subject of its observations and tableaux was born within this company of mirth and folly and the Comte de Caylus was its natural father and its foster father; it took its first lively flights in those ""Écosseuses"" 1739 those ""Étrennes de la Saint-Jean"" 1742 those ""Mémoires de l'Académie des colporteurs"" those ""Avantures des bals des Bois"" those ""Fêtes roulantes"" 1748 a veritable magic lantern of Parisian popular life ."" Avertissement ""Mémoires et réflexions du comte de Caylus"" 1874 s. n. hardcover

1787réf. 91319Paris: Veuve Ballard 1787. Fine. Veuve Ballard Paris 1787 19.6 x 25.5 cm Relié Complete year for 1787 with 50 issues of this health journal with continuous pagination pagination error between nos. 48 and 49. Contemporary half marbled sheep smooth spine bronze sheep lettering-piece rubbing to the spine domino-patterned paper boards a few scuffs to the boards corners worn and small nicks to the edges red edges contemporary binding. The journal founded in 1773 by Jean-Jacques Gardane doctor-regent of the Faculty of Medicine of Paris would run for 17 years with one volume per year except for the years 1773-1774. Jean-Jacques Gardane distinguished himself in the establishment in Paris of treatment houses for the poor and in the diffusion of fumigation boxes intended to revive the drowned and the asphyxiated of all kinds. From 1776 onwards the journal would be written by a society of physicians and Pinel was probably among the new editors from the end of 1784. The journal then played an important bibliographical role; scientific news was carefully reported but the periodical is especially notable at this stage for its declared fight against charlatanism and the section devoted to hygiene is particularly well represented; it is not impossible that it was written by Pinel himself see Roselyne Rey in Dictionnaire des journaux. Manuscript annotations in black ink on the verso of the front board. Veuve Ballard hardcover

1933réf. 190978Lahore: Printed by the Superintendent Government Printing Punjab 1933. A foundational work for the history of the Western Himalayas First and only contemporary edition print run of just 500 well represented institutionally but uncommon in commerce and still authoritative reflected in the publication of three recent reprints. The text gathers papers originally published in the The Journal of the Punjab Historical Society in order to present the information "in a more accessible" form for "Government and State Officers as well as students of History". The papers gathered here in this "monumental and significant work" Bes et al. p.92 provide a much needed survey of the history of the princely states of Western Himalayas including Kangra and its offshoots Chamba Kullu Mandi Suket Bilaspur Kahlur Nurpur Basohli and some of the offshoots of Jammu. The authors saw their task as essential on the face of the effects of modernization obliterating the evidence and carriers of regional history "A large part of the material has been acquired at a time when many causes are at work which are tending to destroy the isolation of the hills and with it much of historical value. The generation that found pleasure in treasuring and transmitting historical lore is rapidly passing away and we are fortunate in having secured so much of what still remains" Preface. The authors between them shared immense knowledge of the region gathered from extensive research travelling the territory and encounters with the local populations. Hutchison 1848-1936 was for sixty years a Church of Scotland medical missionary at Sialkot and then Chamba in the latter place the sole medical man for over ten years continuing his work at the leper colony right until his death. "He was keenly interested in geology and archaeology and was associated for a time with Sir Aurel Stein in his researches in the Punjab. He also investigated the history of the States of the Outer Himalayas and made valuable contributions to gazetteers. A feature of Dr. Hutchison's long service was the arduous journeys. which year by year he made among the high mountain ranges of the Himalayas carrying succour to the far-distant dwellers therein" obit. His colleague Jean-Philippe Vogel 1871-1958 was considered perhaps the greatest Sanskritist of his age. On his first visit to India in 1900 he was "persuaded to accept a post in the Archaeological Department. For most of the next ten years he was Superintendent of the Northern Circle with headquarters at Lahore and was responsible for the preservation of some of India's most famous monuments including the magnificent groups of Mughal palaces mosques and tombs at Lahore and Delhi. Not only did he watch with unremitting care over their repair but he became no mean authority on their history and architecture. Vogel's heart however was less with the Moslem than with the earlier Hindu and Buddhist antiquities. Several summers he spent in the remote highlands of Chamba State and the volume in which he described the monuments and antiquities of that region was a model of patient research and scholarship" obit. In 1903 Vogel collaborated with John Marshall in excavations at Charsada the ancient Pushkalavati on the Swat River and during the next six years did much useful digging on his own at the famous Buddhist sites of Kasia and Saheth-Maheth. For the last two years of his career in India he was Director-General of Archaeology. Soon after retirement he was appointed to the chair of Sanskrit at Leiden in 1925 founding the Kern Institute there as a centre for excellence in the study of the art and archaeology of south and south east Asia. The two later collaborated on a history of Jammu. Neat embossed ownership stamps of Kaikobad Aderji Gai 1881-1969 a Parsi merchant "Supplier of Daily Needs to the Frontier" who furnished provisions to the British Legation in Kabul from the 1920s onwards. Well read his personal library was considered one of the finest in Peshawar he was also an avid antiquarian many objects on display in the Peshawar Museum were donated by him. He is frequently mentioned in contemporary accounts and was a prominent figure in his time. 2 vols. Large octavo. Large folding map printed by the Central Jail Press Lahore at the rear of vol. II.
