1682rif. 008911Leipzig: Joh. Christ. Wohlfahrt 1682 12mo. Engraved additional title 37 ff. 671 1 pp. 38 pp. Contemporary yapp vellum manuscript title to spine edges painted red binding rubbed corners bumped spine lightly creased; both engraved and letterpress titles somewhat brittle; occasional toning the volume apparently at one time used as a herbarium with corresponding discoloration to some leaves. The fourth and most expanded seventeenth-century edition of the first true bibliography of bibliographies originally published in Paris in 1664 by the French Jesuit scholar Philippe Labbé 1607-1667. Conceived as a universal guide to the rapidly proliferating world of printed scholarship the Bibliotheca bibliothecarum marks an important stage in the history of bibliography transforming the scattered repertories of earlier generations into a systematic reference work intended to direct scholars to existing bibliographies in every field of learning. It quickly became one of the indispensable working tools of librarians bibliographers booksellers and learned collectors throughout Europe. The principal text is arranged alphabetically by the authors of bibliographies recording printed catalogues bibliographical compilations and reference works across theology law medicine history philology and the sciences. Particularly valuable are the extensive analytical indices appended to the volume which reorganize the material by subject and greatly enhance its usefulness. This enlarged Leipzig edition also incorporates several independent bibliographical and antiquarian works with separate title pages and pagination. The Bibliotheca Nummaria provides one of the earliest printed bibliographies devoted exclusively to numismatics listing principal authorities on ancient and modern coins. It is followed by the Mantissa Antiquariae Supellectilis derived largely from the writings of Abraham Gorlaeus treating engraved gems rings seals cameos and other classical antiquities. Finally the volume concludes with John Selden's Liber de Nummis the influential English jurist's learned dissertation on ancient coinage and monetary history thereby extending the work beyond bibliography into the wider sphere of historical scholarship and antiquarian research. Labbé's compilation remained the standard point of departure for bibliographical investigation until superseded in the eighteenth century by the more elaborate repertories of Prosper Marchand and Gabriel Peignot. It occupies a central place in the evolution of bibliography as an independent scholarly discipline and remains a landmark in the history of reference literature.
