From the 1940s through the 1970s Halsman's portraits of international figures appeared on the covers of widely circulated magazines such as Look The Saturday Evening Post and Life which published approximately 100 covers by Halsman. The National Portrait Gallery organized the first full exhibition of the photographer's work "Philippe Halsman: A Retrospective" which toured in 2000. His portrait of Anderson is an iconic image taken on January 7 1955 when Anderson became the first African-American to perform with the New York Metropolitan Opera. On that occasion she sang the part of Ulrica in Giuseppe Verdi's Un ballo in Maschera. She is also noted for her dramatic performance at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 when she was denied the right to sing at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Eleanor Roosevelt quit her membership in the DAR and arranged for Anderson to sing at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial. In 1961 she performed at President Kennedy's inauguration.
