1944ref. 0012152Paris France Havana Cuba. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1944. Ephemera. On offer is an original typed and signed letter addressed to Dr. José Agripino Barnet former President of the Republic of Cuba and President of the Comité France-Amérique in Havana. Signed by Philippe Grousset a Free French official in Havana the letter thanks Barnet for a publication commemorating the centenary of Anatole France and notes its transmission to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris. Grousset references activity on July 14 Bastille Day and the recent Liberation of Paris while invoking Anatole France and Louis Pasteur as dual symbols of Frances intellectual and scientific identity. Dated La Havane le 1er Novembre 1944 and issued on the letterhead of the Comité Français de la Libération Nationale Délégation de Cuba the correspondence reflects the deliberate use of cultural figures as instruments of diplomatic signaling in the immediate post-Liberation period.
