He is regarded as a major primary source for 15th century European history."The Mémoires are divided into "books" the first six of which were written between 1488 and 1494 and relate the course of events from the beginning of Commines' career 1464 up to the death of King Louis. Commines' Memoires written between 1488 and 1501 and first published in 1524 cover in their first part the events from the start of Commines' career to the death of Louis XI and in their second the Italian wars under Charles VIII. The Memoires have never been out of print; they remain foundational not just as historical sources on 15th century France but as a work that shaped the practice of history itself. In their psychological insight and attention to motives as well as events the Memoires 'bear witness to a watershed moment for modern conceptions of both historiography and the individual subject' essentially inventing 'a new literary genre one defined by its first-person vision of history' Kleiman 2013 Philippe de Commynes: Memory Betrayal Text pp. 3 8.
